More bad news..... ( not really bad, just sad) ND related

Submitted by klctlc on

I believe yesterday's win by ND and M's loss gave ND the all time winningest % in CFP.

This was pointed out by some of my friendly Domer friends here in Chicago.

I was than less than kind in my response, but I did promise them we would take the trophy back next year in South Bend.

God I hate ND.

This is only said by millenials who don't remember anything beyond the last 20-30 years or programs that only recently found relevance and try to de-legitimize the times when they were not important. Do you honestly believe that in the 1890s, 1900s, 10s, 20s, and 30s football was not important and massively competitive? Do you think ND, UM, Bama, Stanford, Army, Navy or any of the other programs that were around then agree that this period was not relevant? Just because some of the rules have changed and some of the big fish are different now doesn't mean that this was some period of cupcake football. If that is what you believe, you may as well stick with a manufactured product like the NFL, which is the "epitome of football and always has and will be" (and anyone who disagrees is clearly an amateur who doesn't know what they're saying).

Not a millennial. Borderline baby boomer, actually. It may have been competitive and it mattered at the moment, I’d assume. Maintaining the winningest title means zero. If I’m Bama or OSU, why not start the winningest program in this century? They wouldn’t because no one cares. Caring about it is the fan bases little brother inferiority complex.

Amen, crg. I've never understood the "who cares/it doesn't matter" argument when it comes to Michigan's great football history. In fact, you could make a strong case that college football was even more culturally relevant for much/most of the 20th century than it is now. Only professional baseball was comparative. College football was far more popular than the NFL; the NBA (outside of Boston) was relatively small potatoes; and the NHL was still an entity with a very small number of franchises.

The mentality of "only the present matters" is ignorant and offensive (to those who proudly represented the Maize and Blue on the gridiron).

I️ was just saying that I️ don’t think we all think the same way! Honestly, I️ never bring this ish up because like you I’m sick of the past accolades. At this point and time I’m trying to justify paying my dues for next years games! I️ guess I’ll always hope for the best, forgetting the past! GO BLUE, FOREVER!

Period.

To act as if none of it matters cheapens the sport as a whole, and strikes at the heart of why most people watch.

Personally if we are going to disqualify the history and lore surrounding the game, im ready to check out. Its the romanticising of the past that makes the game meaningful.

Its the same with MLB and the records. Take the records out of the game, and it loses alot of its meaning, and appeal.

Why wouldn't the history of our program matter to us?

That's just a dumb take.  Of course it matters.  The history of the program is a huge part of why we love it in the first place.

It's certainly true that the teams over the past 20 years or so haven't generally upheld that level of historic excellence, but that recent mediocrity doesn't erase the identity of the program.
