Well, if enough people like him exist post-legalization, then the black market for weed will still be around, and he can continue to buy his bud tax-free. I do assume you're joking, but not wanting to pay taxes is a bad reason to be against legalization.

Actually I think the kind of burnout that does stuff like this does a lot more harm than good for the legalization movement. I don't smoke, I do favor legalization, I hate that that puts me on the "side" of the kind of retard that revolves their entire lifestyle over a stupid drug, and I bet that that kind of face on the movement turns off a hell of a lot of people who might otherwise be in favor. "4/20 culture" needs a swift kick in the balls - you don't see cigarette smokers always wearing tobacco t-shirts.
but are any of you actually familiar with the kids who work, for instance, UM's SSDP chapter? i know a few and they are by and large bright and motivated. it's a bullshit rap you guys are throwing on folks who are interested in public policy and keeping non-dangerous sorts out of prison in order to legitimate the burnout stereotype. from my interactions, they seem particularly moved by folks with no options but to sell drugs getting busted and sent to prison. i suppose it could all be in the name of getting their reefer with less hassle...but what hassle? they live in a2 and have money. in other words, they recognize their privilege and believe it should be conferred to others with less. isn't that actual altruism? and can anyone engaged in actual activism be totally burnt out?
Did I say that every activist is a burnt-out slacker? And I don't care how bright, motivated, or altruistic they are - if they're the type of person that thinks April 20 is a goddamn holiday because of a drug, or wears t-shirts to celebrate, or otherwise "celebrates the lifestyle", that's dumb. And that's what happens to be a large, visual face of the movement, which as I said, understandably turns people off. If your idea of altruism is making it easier to smoke weed, I think you need a refocus of attention. (That's the generic "you", for clarification, not you the guy on the other keyboard.) Join the Peace Corps or something. Just because I think it should be legal to smoke it doesn't mean I don't think it's also a complete waste of time. I just think it should be legal to waste your time.
(By the way, if dealing weed is the only way for people to make ends meet, the absolute worst thing you can do for their cash flow is to legalize it.)
that if the only people who are public about their marijuana use are considered low status, it's going to be difficult to move forward toward legalization or decriminalization. especially since there are probably very few if any really real deadbeats who are actually just into weed. real deadbeats get serious highs.
I've got a brother who is a serious deadbeat, and he's a pot smoker, and only a pot smoker. For him, it removes any and all ambition to do anything other than be a lazy bum. I can't stand that.
