Marcus Ray leaving WTKA
December 26th, 2017 at 8:41 PM ^
well, bye
December 27th, 2017 at 11:10 AM ^
I didn't like Marcus Ray but if his presence cuts down on how many times I have to hear Jamie Morris say "I mean", I'd rather Marcus just stay in the show.

start listening again. A Boxing Day Miracle!
December 26th, 2017 at 8:45 PM ^
liked his stories
his analysis, however...
December 27th, 2017 at 5:50 AM ^
...a poor man's Steven A. Smith.
December 26th, 2017 at 8:45 PM ^
Butch Jones is a better analyst than Marcus.
December 26th, 2017 at 8:46 PM ^
He's a Jackass
December 26th, 2017 at 8:49 PM ^
Marcus was pretty negative at a time when things had to be considered as on the rise. He can say what he wants to say but he seemed to have a personal problem with the current coaching staff. I stopped listening to the Mzone months ago because the act got old quick.
December 26th, 2017 at 10:44 PM ^
in a bad mood.
December 27th, 2017 at 4:54 AM ^
Mr. Dead Air. He will not be missed. It seemed like he never did any preparation and Jamie had to try to carry the show. I wonder whose decision it really was for him to leave.
December 27th, 2017 at 10:21 AM ^
You said it yourself. He was making free money on that show. No way he would leave on his own. The way Ray was trashing the staff this year, I wouldn't be surprised if Harbaugh finally got him blown out of there.
December 27th, 2017 at 12:10 PM ^
that annoyed me. The worst thing is every so often he would denigrate the value of getting a degree, basically saying athletes should take the money as soon as they could, and how a degree wasn't necessary to make a lot of money in the "real world". Although he may have been technically correct, it's a bad message to broadcast all the way around. Most ex-athletes can't or won't have any opportunities to work in broadcasting, coaching, or other sports-related field after their playing days are over. And even if they did, a degree certainly will help I would think.
Aside from that, Ray didn't exactly further his career opportunities in the broadcasting area (IMO) during his stint at WTKA. Most of the time, he sounded bored, unmotivated, unprepared, and not wanting to be there. I doubt any networks executives looking for talent would be very impressed if they listened to his tapes.

I wonder what Charles Woodson thinks about this. For those who don't know, Marcus played with Charles Woodson.
December 26th, 2017 at 8:55 PM ^
You don’t say!
December 26th, 2017 at 8:56 PM ^
I did not realize that. Marcus never mentioned it.
December 26th, 2017 at 8:56 PM ^
That Marcus still talks to Charles?
December 26th, 2017 at 9:09 PM ^
Ha, he says Charles is his best friend but I've never seen/heard Charles say it in return.
Probably because he would be a terrible best friend to have.
December 26th, 2017 at 9:23 PM ^
He was always too negative about the team. He seemed to forgot that his teams was average before the championship.
December 27th, 2017 at 6:35 AM ^
Marcus is so annoying that he sometimes makes me wish that the '97 team had lost a couple of games.
December 26th, 2017 at 10:06 PM ^
are you saying Marcus Ray and Charles Woodson played on the same team? Huh.. thats crazy!
December 26th, 2017 at 8:59 PM ^
Marcus is a guy I always wanted to like. He seems like a really good human being overall but he provides virtually zero useful information or substance. It's as if he tries too hard to have a dissenting opinion from the majority, especially when the majority opinion is a positive one. Then he acts like an asshole to anyone who argues with him.
December 26th, 2017 at 9:53 PM ^
I met him at a car dealership that he worked with. He was really cool. But he became unlistenable.
December 27th, 2017 at 8:05 AM ^
Hey, works for Mike Valenti, right?

Pretty much wraps up sports journalism as a whole. Dissent for the sake of argument and/or clicks.
December 27th, 2017 at 1:16 PM ^
Careful now. That contrarian attitude is what pushed a Columbus kid to come play for Michigan!
December 26th, 2017 at 9:02 PM ^
Did he really say "relieve myself"?
December 26th, 2017 at 9:10 PM ^
I mean, I just relieved myself but it wasn’t from a radio show
December 27th, 2017 at 8:09 AM ^
from some chorizo mac'n cheese
December 26th, 2017 at 9:05 PM ^
He is not good and listening to him its like listening to a random fan spewing random crap. I have a hard time listening to him especially when he goes off tangent and talks about random shit. Nice guy but not a radio person.
December 26th, 2017 at 9:10 PM ^
Like listening to a fan spewing random crap, who then drops the "well I played here so my opinion automatically trumps your opinion" card whenever someone calls him out or argues with him.
December 26th, 2017 at 9:12 PM ^
Also seemed to overplay his relationship with Woodson
December 26th, 2017 at 9:46 PM ^
About that '97 team, like no other team did things like they did - like they didn't have the GOAT making Ray look good.
December 26th, 2017 at 10:44 PM ^
was starting QB, wasn't he, with GOAT Brady as backup?
Marcus was award winning safety in 97, can't take that away.
Interestingly Brady was the DL coach of that squad... CFB has changed in the intervening 20 years but these guys got what they got.
December 26th, 2017 at 11:35 PM ^

Woodson
December 26th, 2017 at 9:24 PM ^
I attended a um alumni event at UM flint during the coaching search (between thanksgiving and Christmas because we had already fired Hoke) and he said we should look for Nick Saban to be a name to come to Michigan. I knew then he was full of it.
December 26th, 2017 at 10:09 PM ^
Was he serious ?!
December 27th, 2017 at 12:58 AM ^
Yes. I can corroborate this. I heard him say this on the radio. He even said something like "everyone will think I'm crazy but I have heard from good sources that he'd take the job." Pretty much chatsports level credibility right there.
December 26th, 2017 at 9:09 PM ^
I swear he would zone out while on air. JMo would say something and there would be repeated silence. Was cringe worthy at times. Did not really show that he cared about the quality of the product IMO.
December 26th, 2017 at 9:29 PM ^
not really that good
December 26th, 2017 at 11:28 PM ^
May be understatement of the year...
December 27th, 2017 at 12:14 PM ^
He doesn't have to drag around M-Ray for several hours every day on-air and put up with his negativity. JMo isn't the best talk show host either, but at least he's positive much of the time and attempts to fill up the air with something of value.
December 26th, 2017 at 9:11 PM ^
He seemed to have checked out from the MZone some time ago. Always enjoyed him more on Rays of Light in the morning. His chemistry with Sam was markedly better.
December 26th, 2017 at 9:12 PM ^
...question is, who will be his replacement?
December 26th, 2017 at 9:17 PM ^
Jim Rome
