unfortunately he never committed to m. harbaugh and durkin put on full court press so it certainly wasnt lack of effort. smith mightve been their top overall target that 1st class, maybe aside from minkah fitzpatrick. pretty clear hed be a good player if not a great one. i guess they just didnt have enough time during abbreviated cycle. i know it came down to m, ucla and uga with the staff never feeling truly out of it.
and i think he did commit to ucla at some point (though could be thinking of the tall DE from cali)

is a beast. He may be small but he's fast as hell. Probably the fastest LB in the country. I heard he ran 4.4 at UGA. He's going to be a 1st round pick (top 15 if he has NFL LB size but he's pretty small).

PSU put out a press release earlier today that (as I read it) seemed to say Barkley was a unanimous All-American. Is (1) the PSU link wrong, (2) the OP link wrong, (3) or I misreading the article?

That link says he was "unanimously selected to the consensus NCAA All-American team". He was a consensus All American, not a unanimous All American.

I think Saquon Barkley isn't listed officially as an unanimous All-American because his selections were split between RB and All-Purpose/Athlete.
To be an unanimous All-American, a player has to be recognized as a 1st team All-American in their position in all 5 of the official NCAA-recognized All-American team selectors: AP, FWAA, AFCA, WCFF, and TSN
Saquon made it as a 1st team RB for the AFCA, and WCFF teams, 1st team All-Purpose for the AP and FWAA, and a 1st team Athlete for TSN.
There's so debate on whether a player selected as an All-Purpose or Athlete can qualify to be an unanimous All-American since not all 5 selectors have those position. Usually most outlets only count the players selected for the universally used skill positions. USC's Adoree' Jackson had a similar issue last season because some selectors had him as their DB while others had him at All-Purpose.

So much can change with actually having a threat at the QB position. Watch out for Gentry next season along with Mckeon, but Gentry is more of a mismatch than Butt was. He is taller and faster. Don't know if he will be an all american but they should target him a lot and that is a staple with Patterson, if he wins the job.
Ruiz could also be a future all-american but I doubt next year. You are right on the money with those four, but maybe Patterson also. I really hope Winovich comes back and he should have been an all-american this year if you look at his stats. Way more than doubled Bosa's. Don't even get me started on that bullshit. There really are some people out there who just need there ass kicked.
One thing about Brady Hoke, that guy knows d-line talent. I didn't think much about Hurst as a recruit at all, but man he humbled me. Class act that is one tough and good d-tackle. I think we will be talking about Solomon in a couple years the same way. He could be an all american easily in a couple years.
I think Gary and Hill are shoe ins for all-american honors along with Winovich. Tell me Mattison can't develop d-lineman. That fat ass at osu is not even in the same league.

basically zero defense in that conference there are a lot of inflated stats. 4 of the 5 (forgetting about the punter) play on offense.

This is one of the reasons I am always suspicious of people who are instantly wowed by summary statistics in football. When you then add a layer of analysis like a yards per play or yards per point or adjust one's expectations for conference peers and things like that, you find out that, in their own world, sometimes certain players are actually remarkably average. Not saying that's the case here, of course, but there's a story behind some statistics that definitely gets overlooked.
