Rumor Mill: Brian Smith (M DB coach) may be leaving

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

Take it for what little its worth but there is noise on some message boards that Michigan is losing defensive backs coach Brian Smith. Word is he's been offered a defensive coordinator position at Rice.

It seems like just yesterday when some were freaking out about losing Greg Jackson. Congrats to Brian Smith on the promotion. Always good to see our assistants move up as it makes the job that much more attractive for the next man up with the opportunity for career advancement and stability at the top with Harbaugh and Don Brown.

When your defenses produce like ours have, teams are going to come calling for your coaches. Thankfully Don Brown has said he's too old to consider anymore promotions or go anywhere else.

Is it possible Harbaugh is giving a firm handshake here? I think safeties may have underperformed at times this year. I wonder if we move Zordich to coach all DB's, and get ourselves a true WR coach.

I want Matt Patricia in. Part of a good defense is having a coach who has a kick-ass beard.

I know this is unrealistic. Patricia may end up getting NFL HC offers soon.

People complaining about our safeties: "What we have a unit that is only above average?"

Brian Smith did a good job, best of luck to him. The defense was not our issue this year.

I was hoping he was next in line to take over whenever don brown retires since he's worked under him before Michigan. I'm interested in who all goes this offseason and see what harbaugh does with the open spots. Does he add the 10th spot to offense or defense

Our defensive backs have been excellent since he came and though they were a talented group to begin with, he has turned them into one of the most consistently good position groups on the team. He'd be a big loss if true.
