OT Detroit Tigers 5-07-10
Tigers off to a good start tonight up 7-1 after 2.5 in Cleveland. Laird and Everett at the bottom of the order are struggling to say the least. If you add their batting averages together you have a .316 hitter.
Does Dombrowski need to make a deal for a catcher or a shortstop? Will Avila be the answer at catcher long term? Do we have a shortstop in the farm system on the cusp of making it to the Majors?

Bonderman giving the lead away in the bottom of the 3rd amazingly. Raburn (worst defensive outfielder alive) just bobbled away a run.
But I agree with you - terrible production from the bottom of the order, Laird and Everett in particular. It's the main reason we have only score 2 runs in the 2nd inning all season long. That's amazing when you think of it.
I think Avila may work at catcher and Santiago is decent at short - he should definitely be in there more often than Everett. We have no one else in the minors that is close at either position that I'm aware of.

As for Raburn, I agree wholeheartedly that his glove is an issue.
Our lineup is so much better with Guillen. Right now we have no one to protect Cabrera. Hopefully once he's back he can stay healthy

Some pitchers have legitimate control issues but I believe many pitchers are too scared to throw strikes because they don't trust their stuff. I don't like the Twins but I do like the approach their pitchers take
Knapp is straight out of the Twins system, so I think they are attempting to take that approach with their staff as well. You still need stuff though and it's clear that Bonderman doesn't have anything.

After the shoulder surgery and, as a result, once his fastball went from 94-96 to 89-91, the slider became less effective. He still doesn't have an out pitch, so as a result, he's getting hammered. He's always been a guy who just threw the shit out of the baseball, and now that he can't do that, I honestly do not think he has the mentality to learn to pitch instead of just chucking fire at the hitters. And he's going to get clobbered, much like he did tonight in the 3rd inning. And the Tigers are not going to be inclined to wait on him past this season, when his contract runs out.

Walk rate is up, K rate is down although he struck out 8 tonight.....I'm wondering if he's hurt. He has had to take on New York, Texas, Tampa Bay and Toronto also, but he's better than this.
Yeah, he's just pitched against good teams. He's been shelled a few times, but he's turned in 2 ER over 7 against Baltimore who has a decent offense and 0 ER over 7 against TB who had a great offense. But yeah, if the BoSox are going to have a shot this year (which they won't if the Yanks and Rays don't slow down) Beckett will need to pick it up.
The scouting report on Igor: too short, not good enough range to play everyday, has problems throwing to first with huge hump in back, needs to get out of the lab more and see the field, takes orders well, loyal.
Cale Iorg, on the other hand, is in AA Erie. He's batting .213 through 27 games and 102 PA. I think Brent Dlugach has a better chance of getting the call up. Iorg's a great fielder, but many question if he can ever hit well enough to stay with the big club.
I'd question either one being able to come up here and stick. Dombrowski was trying like crazy to pry Starlin Castro from Chicago using Granderson as the bait. I think there's a pretty clear reason for that.

The Cubs need some hitting and hopefully he can provide. Throw in a defensive improvement in the middle infield with Theriot moving to second and I'm sold.
He likely will be awesome, but I still think the Cubs rushed him.....regardless of what he did last night. With all due respect to Austin Jackson, if the Cubs had bitten, I would rather have had him. He might be the next Hanley Ramirez, except he's actually a good defensive player......but again, Chicago better hope they didn't rush this kid too quickly because it certainly looks like a panic move calling him up after only 30 games.
Yeah, the biggest thing that I'm seeing is that we're afraid that we've pulled him up too fast. He was tearing it up in AA and it's become more popular to skip AAA altogether with elite prospects so we'll see. Last night is too small of a sample size to draw any conclusions from obviously, but this was a better debut for us than Jason Heyward's on opening day. Last night was exciting, and frankly the Cardinals will pull away from the Cubs unless they kick it into gear.
EDIT: I would not have been happy if the Cubs had taken the bait on Granderson. I like the Tigers, but I'd rather see Castro in Chicago. Granderson will probably be a liability before too long.
