OT - Thanksgiving - Traditions and Questions

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Soon after graduating from Michigan I realized that Thanksgiving was easily my favorite holiday, not the least of reasons being that most jobs I had gave both Thursday and Friday off.  More importantly it is a uniquely American holiday celebrating our incredible fortune at being able to have the economic and religious freedoms that had never before existed in civilization - things that we all take for granted were truly radical accomplishments attained by our forefathers.

George Washington famously proclaimed: sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

So the holiday questions are these:

1.  What are your favorite Thanksgiving traditions, and what are you doing for this holiday weekend?  Family?  Travel?  Great meals?  Maybe some football?

2.  With the scheduling of CFB, The Game is now this holiday weekend.  Are you going, and if so, will you be dropping by the MgoBlog fiesta?

EDIT:  3.  It's morning time now, so what is in your cup?

I hope you are with family and/or friends no matter what.

Happy Thanksgiving and Go Blue, beat ohio!

1. Homemade pizza and Sam Adams beer. We started this after 2 oven fires in the first three Thanksgivings of our marriage. 16 Thanksgivings of pizza without incident. 2. No :(

While I love the big Thanksgiving feast, I also love the simple Thanksgiving meal. We don't live very close to family so often it is just the four of us--my wife and our two kids. When the kids were younger we would sometimes do takeout or pizza, and as they got older we would do a small but nice meal. It's amazing how many of my friends will say that they are a little envious, especially if they are driving all over the Northeast for the holiday. This year we are going to Cooperstown for a couple of days. We'll eat out today and hit the baseball HOF tomorrow. Kids are excited!

Watching football, eating turkey, maybe catching a movie at the theaters if I have the energy.

It will probably be best if I don't post during the game on Saturday. If I don't wish to be banned, that is. Hoping for a win, but not expecting it.

Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends...at someone else's  home.  I only have to bring the wine. No cooking is truly something to be thankful for.  Saturday will be in AA for the game. Already committed to another tailgate and since it is a noon game, probably won't have time to  make it to the MGoBlog bash.

Blessings to my fellow MGoBloggers and Happy Thanksgiving!

Staying at my sister’s house in North Carolina with my parents, wife, and her parents. Very fortunate to be close with the in-laws. I lived with them for a year to save money on rent during med school. It had its predictable downsides, but I did manage to convert my father-in-law into a die-hard Michigan fan. My wife and I went to UofM, my sister went there for undergrad, my brother-in-law for grad school, and my dad was a professor there for 20 odd years, so we’ll all be camped around the TV watching The Game this weekend.

Back in the day, the grandkids made homemade taffy with the grandparents.

Watching football and playing football with the nephews.

Going to The Game. Would never sell my tickets. Also, going to the MGoTailgate.

Playing some backyard football with the family/friends, hopefully come out on the winning side  Lol.    Hoping the Lions can win, but not sure I can fully trust them to bet the game.  Ready to eat some tasty grub tomorrow with some tasty beverages obviously.   Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thanksgiving is the one day I become a Lions fan instead of a Bears fan. I eat as much as I possibly can, watch the parade, football, spend time with family, and nowadays, get ready for The Game! What a holiday. Thanksgiving is up there for me too.

1. Our traditions have been hard to come by since we left Michigan 12 years ago, but we've been blessed to share some wonderful Thanksgivings, and even enjoy a couple of "traditional" ones like old times with my Mom's family. This year we are hosting some friends from church. Several of them are Vikings fans, which means that we'll have a pleasant time chiding each other over the result of the game. (Which reminds me, one of my traditions is watching the Lions lose, often in embarrassing fashion.) We expect 12 children in addition to our own, so things may be a bit... exciting. But I expect it to be a great time. My wife is fantastic and she thrives on this stuff. 2. Haven't been to a game at the Stadium since we left. My last Michigan-OSU game was 2003, a pleasant memory, but one all too distant.

the lions have played pretty decent and i think have had the toughest schedule of all the NFL.  meanwhile the vikings have a fine record, but conversely they have had one of the weakest schedules.  that flips today with the lions now only playing 2 teams (vikes are one of them) with a winning record the rest of the year and both of those games are at home.   if the lions win today that could really bode well for the remainder of the season.  go lions.

and particular blessings to you and your church/church family.  i have never preached on or about thankgiving but i have always thought that it would be a very fruitful area.

I'm home for the holiday and just got done hitting a few high school reunion bars. Favorite part of Thanksgiving is that I get to enjoy family, food, and football without having to buy everyone presents. Friday I will play some highly competitive backyard basketball and football with my siblings. I will be at both the MgoTailgate and the game.

For passing on this incredible tradition to the next generation and congratulations to your young hunter! We hunt in Menominee County.... just got in. Many does but no bucks (to be seen).... nevertheless, they are there. It was just the first day.... need to bag one by tomorrow so as not to interfere with The Game.

Sadly, I won't be able to make it back East for Thanksgiving this year. So while it'll just be my roommates and me out here in California, I've already made a few sides, we've got a Turkey to throw on the grill tomorrow morning, and as always, there's plenty of beer.

Will be watching The Game bright and early at 9AM. Again, with plenty of beer (and probably something a touch stronger) on hand.

I’m probably one of the few people that isn’t a fan of thanksgiving. Growing up I was usually sick over thanksgiving, I’m not a fan of turkey and we usually have so many places to go I can never sit and watch football like I would prefer. I don’t hate the 4 day weekend though. Hopefully The Game this year will make it a better thanksgiving

Most of my family is vegetarian, so Wednesday before Thanksgiving we order carryout, and have that be a significant family event (this year it's Thai food). Thanksgiving day is usually spent with family either here in MI or sometimes in Ohio. Day of, lunch is our most important meal of the day and it's usually traditional Indian food (family is from India) and wraps up before the lions game. Black Friday, some cousins usually convince us to go with them to Best Buy or something for a good deal lol and then head back in time for college football rivalry games.

The Lions will be on the TV, the turkey will be slowly cooking in the Green Egg, and I will be looking forward to dessert as we live near an Amish community and they absolutely make the best pies ever.

No travels this year just good food and football. High school playoffs Friday and The Game of course on Saturday.

Getting ready to put the turkey in the smoker now. Have family coming over later along with good friends originally from Nebraska who are like family. Will probably watch the lions a bit. Have to work tomorrow which is really dragging me down. And then on Saturday will head down to AA to watch Michigan shock the world!

such as the facts in the captain's diary, written contemporaneously, and which contradict the shade that article tries to throw.   i know its popular to denegrate american history, but i'll stick with the people who lived it.  the article also says thanksgiving wasn't 'official' until the 1860's, which contradicts president washington's rather 'official' creation and recognition of the holiday and the reasons therefore, cited in the OP.

I don't think the article was trying to denigrate American history. I think that celebrations similar to Thanksgiving took place throughout the colonial and early national period, but the holiday as we know it was made official by Lincoln--at the urging of a woman from New Hampshire, I might add. Earlier celebrations were sometime harvest related and sometimes days for religious thanks (though often the religious days of thanks included fasting not feasting!). But bringing them together into something resembling our modern Thanksgiving didn't happen until the 1860s. The other interesting point is that I believe there are only two extant contemporaneous sources about the first Thanksgiving--and they are about 1 paragraph each. The mention venison and waterfowl, but not turkey. So your daughter's deer is definitely in line with the historical record! Oh, and the connection between football and Thanksgiving goes back a long way--to the 1880s I believe. Have a great day XM--sounds like it will be a nice one with the family!
