Semi-OT: Why is this a thing? - "Jump Around" edition

Submitted by Larry Appleton on

Disclaimer: 1) I am a Wisconsin resident, but 2) no, I have never been to a game at Camp Randall Stadium.  That said . . .

Why in the hell is playing "Jump Around" and literally doing nothing but jumping up and down such a celebrated event?  House of Pain was not from Wisconsin, the tradition started six years AFTER the song was released, and . . . again I must stress, THEY ARE JUST JUMPING UP AND DOWN.  Good job?

For those who have witnessed it in person, is it really that cool of an event, or is it just over-hyped blather?

Been to three games at Camp Randall and thought the "Jump Around" thing was one of the most fun thing I've seen at an away game.  Last time i was there was 2005 and when they played it between the 3rd & 4th quarter and everybody started jumping (doing the pogo) it was dark out and the place was ROCKING.  Cool as shit IMO.

Why on earth would you think this is a problem?

I sat near the student section recently and one thing that struck me was that these are 20 year old kids who have just a tremendous amount of pent up energy and the games are a great outlet for them. Another thing: I love the marching band and the fact that it is now amplified, but some of the piped in music during the endless timeouts is also a good thing (except 7 Nation Army, which is so cliche and not worthy of Michigan; "We are the Champions" is equally stupid). They play a lot of hip hop which I think is great. That's the music that the kids listen to by and large and the games should ultimately be for the students and not the crotchety blue bloods at midfield who won't even stand up for the wave.

It only exists in some frat guys mind.

There was aUM student a few years ago who wanted to get funding from the school to create a new school song called hail and Unite. He said he was securing commitments from big time rappists to help perform and produce the song.

As another 30-something in training to become a crotchety old man, I understand your point.  Personally, I believe anything that is called a "tradition" should have been around longer than the people who practice it.

Yep.  By the time those 10 year olds are in college themselves, then they can actually call it an established tradition.  To the older generations, it should just be "a thing" that was done and people liked it.

A true tradition is something that you are expected to do, though you don't completely know how it started or why you do it, but you still feel compelled to do it.

30K + people jumping up and down in unison. Most probably drunk. If you're a student you'd absolutely love it.

Do  you like the student section doing the blues bros?  Does that have a connection to UM (honest question)?

It's fun. At a football game. It's now part of Wisco tradition. Wish UM came up with it first.

He no doubt thought it part of his agreement to play for Michigan that someone clean up after his horse and that he have his own flat.  He must've thought you were there to tend to Ol' Smokey.

I know all this because WD showed me his Super Guide.
