sad news. I just can't imagine ever having the desire to pilot my own plane. The risk / reward equation just doesn't work for me. Despite all statistics to the contrary, I also feel much, much safer driving than I do flying commercial. Definitely has to do with the (partially illusory) aspect of control.

I am sure that I am perceiving the incidence of private small-plane crashes to be higher than it actually is...but I feel like there have been several celebrity deaths due to small/private plane crashes. John Denver, JFK Jr., Halladay, Troy Gentry, Payne Stewart...I am sure others.

Owning and/or flying my own plane just seems like something I would screw up.

Either way, the loss of Halladay is tragic.

I think it also has to do with the likelihood of survival. You know a plane crash is far less likely to occur than a car crash is, but you are far more likely to survive a car crash than a plane crash in the even you're in one.

He took off at dusk, in haze, flying over water. For all INTENSIVE PURPOSES, that was instrument conditions. He was not Instrument rated and had very little flight time without an instructor sitting next to him. He did a graveyard spiral into the ocean.

So either he misunderstood the consitions he was taking off in, or he seriously overestimated his abilities. A very sad mistake. You can't screw around when you are piloting a plane.

Because the percentage of rich celebrities who own small private planes seems to be like 80%, while the number of normal people who own planes is 0%. But yeah, the risk still seems higher than it should be.

Generally speaking, commercial air travel is incredibly safe. It's the general aviation travel (charters, private planes, corporate jets, etc.) which is significantly less-regulated and higher-risk. Some say it's safer than driving, others say it's less safe (depending on how you translates driving vs flying statistics). I do get the illusion of control aspect, although in my line of work (management consultant), commercial air travel is practically a job requirement.

I'm a professional pilot and don't fly single engine airplanes due to the risk to my career and my life. They aren't inherently unsafe but the risk/reward isn't worth it to me. You are correct that you are much safer in an airliner than a passenger car. You might be Jeff Gordon but half of the other maniacs on the road are too busy Snap chatting to pay attention to where their two ton missile is heading.

I️ was 9 years old when he made his second career appearance against the Tigers. Had a no hitter going with one out left and Bobby Higginson broke it up with a home run. Distinctly remember Ernie Harwell calling that game. RIP

As the last pitcher where it was more odd to not go the complete game. Growing up a blue jays fan, it was almost an auto win when he was on the man. Always gave credit to teammates first. 100% class all the way RIP

Halladay was no doubt a great pitcher, one of the very best of the last couple decades. The Tigers always struggled (as most teams did) when facing Doc; it was somewhat a relief when he moved to the National League. Everything I've heard about him points to him also being an A+ human being, too. Definitely belonging to the Baseball HOF, and if there were one, the HOF of life.

my family has had jays season tickets for nearly 30 years. i grew up watching Halladay as he was the jays franchise for years. Class act and fierce competitor. One of the Jays all time greats

God bless him and his family. Tough to explain how this makes me feel. Getting older sucks, so many people you grow familiar with through sports, movies, personal life whatever, seem to die so often and it just reminds you how fragile life is and nothing is permanent. Eternal peace to him.
