Basketball Exhibition vs. GVSU Discussion Thread

Submitted by TheBigPrince on

Initial thoughts were that the freshmen of this year look much more developed than last year's freshmen at this time. Eli Brooks looks like he can be a very good contributor this year at both the 1 and 2. Livers looks like he can be a solid backup at the 4, however that position is what worries me the most on this team.

Charles Matthews did not disappoint other than a few missed free throws. I think he is immediately the best player on the team with Moe close behind. Rahk seems like the leader of the team.

I posted a lot in the other thread but:

Matthews looked great. He looks like the best guard on the team and in contention with Mo for the best player.

Rahk and Duncan are what they are. Duncan did what we expected, MAAR was quiet tonight but he wasn't needed. It'd be nice if he could keep his efficiency and up his usage but we won't know that for a bit.

Simpson is the clear #1 at point.

Livers will play and provide decent minutes but he doesn't look like a guy who's going to contribute majorly this year. 10 minutes a game or so with more coming when we have foul trouble, barring massive in-season improvements.

Brooks and Teske look legit. Expect Watson to be the #1 wing off the bench. Poole looks like a redshirt.

We are fine from a talent standpoint. Inexperience and youth will hold the team back, at least early on. PG battle will be interesting, however it works out I think all 3 guys can be quality players this year. Simpson guides the offense best and is probably the best on defense, Simmons is the best scorer, and Brooks is the best shooter of the 3.

If Moe and Matthews can score consistently and MAAR and Robinson chip in like they are capable of, we should be competitive in most games. Health and the growth of the young guys will determine whether the team makes it to the dance. May be a .500 team for much of the season.

Matthews is the real deal. I thought Simpson was the best PG. Teske played fairly well coming off the bench.

I think this will be a fun team to watch this year.

Little known fact: a few weeks after Michigan lost to Appalachiaan St, Izzo's 8th ranked Spatans lost at home in double overtime to GVSU. No one ever fucks with them over that loss.
