Pickin' and Grinnin'

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Finally have a slow Friday and time to do some 'Pickin' and Grinnin', i.e., picking teams to win against the spread.   Home team will be in ALL CAPS.  Whichever team is favored will be the first team listed.  So for instance our game would be as follows

MICHIGAN  23       Rutgers

All caps means we're the home team, we're favored by 23 to beat our rival, Rutgers. For those unfamiliar with this or who have forgotten, picking against the spread goes like this: If you think we're going to win by more than 23 you'd pick Michigan.  If you think we won't win (heaven forbid) or that we won't win by at least 23 points, you'd pick Rutgers.  Here are some other B10 and games of interest:

NORTHWESTERN   1       Sparty (Surprise line of the week.  Go Cats!)

OHIO                         7       Penn State

PURDUE                   6       Nebraska

IOWA                         9      Minnesota

Oklahoma St.             6     WVU

Georgia                     14    FLORIDA

ND                              7      N.C. State

Washington St.          2 1/2  ARIZONA  (Leach v. Rich Rod, could be good)

Anyway, enjoy.  Have a great weekend.  First one for me in 2 months not coaching/traveling/watching football in person.  Bittersweet.

I like PSU  +7

I'm iffy on Sparty because honestly it wouldn't surprise me at all to see them get beat.

I really like Georgia -14, Florida gets exposed for the dumpster fire they are.

But I have a hard time picking an upset in that group.  Maybe MSU?  Minnesota?

I guess it's possible that PSU does to OSU what they did to us.  But OSU had two weeks to prepare and has a functional offense.

I'd really like to see NU beat MSU though.  And fuck Purdue.

of wages so i will contact you later.  some factory jobs pay pretty well, indeed hopefully yours is one of them  so i might not be able to put you onto anything you'd be interested in.  many of the opportunities that i know of are in the building field, particularly framing.   got any experience doing that?

who for years (decades?) we used to pick against the spread during football season, each against the other. our name for it was always 'pickin' and grinnin' and probably did come from hee-haw or some other country reference.  kept us in touch for many years when i left socal.  miss that guy.  he was a very good college athlete and a heck of an investigator too.

I would like to see a "where are they now" story on this guy. Or a VH1 "Behind the Music" about where he came from.

Most disturbing movie I have ever seen.

edit: just googled it and found out that it's "Billy Redden," and where he is now is available for all to see on Wikipedia.

I'm seeing MSU -2.5, where are you getting NW -1?  Regardless I'd have to take Sparty in that one (as much as it pains me to do so).

Really like WVU, UGA, and OSU to cover.

NC State has been a surprise but I'd have to take ND to cover off their USC beatdown.

If Arizona can avoid turnovers and continue to run the ball effectively I think they'll knock off Wazzu in Tucson.

That Nebraska/Purdue line is a tough one.  Purdue has looked good at times (vs. UL, Mizzou, Minny) and like shit at others (Mich, RU).  Nebraska has more talent but how motivated their players are is hard to fathom given that Riley is undoubtedly gone.  Think it's low scoring and the Huskers sneak out of WL with a win.

OSU is coming off the bye, that usually matters outside of ann arbor, meanwhile PSU was shooting their load all over our proverbial faces...  I really like OSU this weekend to smash PSU.

I actually think rutgers covers...  I expect like 31 - 10 good guys...

I really like Florida plus the points against georgia as well.

Now, want to make some cash in the NFL: here are the three bets I am placing sunday:  (note, I try to hit on in four 3 team parlays and am 3/10 so far on three teamers this year)

1.  Three team parlay:  100 pays 500

Raiders, Seahawks, NE over

2. three team parlay:  100 pays 500

Browns, Colts Steelers

Pick of the week: charges plus a touchdown against NE.  People forget that Atlanta has offensive woes and now are forgetting that NE gets scored on.  want to roll the dice on the over of 48?  probably not a bad idea as well...

Bonus monday night pick:  KC covers the 7 along with an under 43

in case you are reading it wrong, it's not that PSU or Minny would score that much, its that they will either win the game or in the case of both of those teams, if they lose the margin of loss will be less than 7 and 9 points, respectively.

I like Florida and PSU to cover the spread; think PSU wins straight up.

Also, I think MSU ends up winning. In 2016 Northwestern embarassed MSU in EL worse than any other Big Ten team, they'll want revenge.

ND wins but doesn't cover; Minnesota covers but doesn't win.

Purdue wins and covers, sending Nebraska into a full on death spin.

Where did these lines come from? Vegas Insider has different lines. Anyways, if you're giving me these lines:

  • M 23.5 Rutger. Michigan wins 32-6.
  • NW 1 Sparty  (VI has MSU -2.5). Staee, on both lines.
  • OSU  7 PSU (OSU -6.5). PSU. I think they win out right. Perhaps this is more hope than reality.
  • PURDUE 6 Nebraska. (PUR -4.5) Purdon't just lost to Rutger. I'll take Nebraska
  • IOWA 9 Minnesota (Iowa -7). Minnesota. Iowa doesn't have the offense to pull away
  • Ok St. 6 WVU. Ok St. WVa (OSU -7). OSU. West Va cannot stop the pass. OK St big.
  • Georgia -14 UF. (UGa -14). Yea, I won't bet on this one, but if I had to pick, I'd go UGa. Great D vs horrible O. Under 43.5 too.
  • ND 7 N.C. St. (ND -7.5) This is a tough one too. NCST hasn't thrown an INT all season. ND made hay vs MSU and USC via turnovers. I think NCST keeps it close if they keep it clean.
  • Wazzou -2.5 ARIZONA. (Wazzou -3). Leaning Wazzou in this one. Thanks for the hook. Wazzou 27-24.

OK State's offense is not nearly as fearsome as it was early in the season.  They've lost 2 or 3 Olinemen from a position group they weren't real deep with in the first place.  Add to that the rain, and I don't think they cover.  They might just lose the game straight up.

I’ll play this game ... Michigan Northwestern Penn State Minnesota WVU Florida NC State Arizona In particular, I really like those lines for Minny and Florida. Not sure we can cover ours ... But I certainly am hoping so. I assume we “take a step forward” on offense his week only because Rutgers is so garbage.

I don't follow Vegas lines all that much and what they mean exactly, but I'll give it a whirl:

OSU wins but does not cover. I'm thinking a 34-31 kind of game but it still leaves the door open for PSU to make the playoff if some other chaos happens around them.

Purdue wins and covers. Brohm is slowly building something at Purdue, and Nebraska is just an awful team under Mike Riley. I doubt he gets fired if they lose this weekend, but he won't last past the last game of the season.

Georgia wins but doesn't cover. While this is an awful Florida team, they've still had Georgia's number for years. Even when they had no business having Georgia's number. I remember a few years ago Georgia came in the top 10, Florida was unranked, and Florida ran over 400 yards on them. Only passed like 5-10 times. Nailbiter for Georgia because rivalry games are weird.

ND wins and covers. Getting us one step closer to some dreaded horror of a playoff scenario with OSU, ND and PSU all in it. If ND wins out, they'll make it in.

I'm in Ivan Drago mode here... there are no feelings in vegas.

Michigan -23 vs. Rutgers: I'd fade the points here. I'm seeing M laying as many as 24... that's a lot for a bad offense to lay. Plus its a rivalry game and we know how crazy those can get. Peters shows up after Michigan gets up big and Rutgers closes the gap, M wins but doesn't cover. Gimme Rutgers +24.

Northwestern +1 vs. MSU: Give me MSU -1. Northwestern's wins have come agaist teams that are nowhere near as good as MSU. This is a pick the winner line... Victory for MSU!

Ohio State -7 vs. Penn State: Honestly, dont see much value on either side here. My lean is Ohio State -7, but this is a pass for me. I'd start *thinking* about it at OSU -4 or PSU +10. Lots of X factors to mix in here...

Purdue -6 vs. Nebraska: This one is also a bit thin value wise for me, but I think Purdue -6 is the play. We all know how the ole dead man walking vibe plays out.

Iowa -9 vs Minnesota: Line currently sits at Iowa -7 and that's my play for sure. The boat ain't gon' row itself and Fleck has a few empty oars right now.

WVU +6 vs OKST: Line currently sits at OKST -7 which is still a bit thin, I'd hit -6 for sure so -7 is a good decision point. OKST has been messing around recently so I'm not super excited to back them, bit Ivan Drago doesnt get excited. Roll OKST -7.

Florida +14 vs. Georgia: UGA -14 all day. Destruction, Terror, and mayhem... Dogs are going to bomb Gainsville, local residents should evatuate the area.

Notre Dame - 7 vs NC State: NC State is another team I think is in for a rude awakening. They've been nice but its about to get real for them starting this week. I hate Bryan Kelly but ND is legit. Books are currently requiring the hook on top of the 7 and I'm good with that. Gimme ND -7'.

Arizona -2' vs WAZZU: Another "pick the winner" game. I think it's WAZZU. Cougs already choked @ Cal so I expect them to handle their business here. WAZZU - 2'.

If they miss... they miss. /Drago

OSU has payback for them from last year and they already lost one big home game

this year to the Sooners...

..they won;t lose two
