[OT] - Arizona QB Khalil Tate named Pac-12 Player of the Week for third consecutive time

Submitted by BoFlex on

The first player since USC's Rodney Peete in 1988 to win the award 3 consecutive times.

True sophomore QB Khalil Tate was thrusted into action in Week 6 after Colorado knocked incumbent starter Brandon Dawkins out of the game with a rib injury. Three games later, Tate has completed 31/41 passes for 468 yards (11.4 ypa), 694 rushing yards (15.1 ypc), and 11 total TDs.

It looks like RichRod might have found his next Denard/Pat White at Arizona.

Edit: No desire to bring back RichRod, but that doesn't mean his offense isn't still entertaining/electric as ever.

I've not forgotten the great Michigan careers of Demar Dorsey, Christian Pace, Davion Rogers, Taylor Hill, Fitz Toussaint, Vlad Emilion, Marvin Robinson, Richard Ash, Ray Vinopol, Isaiah Bell, some receiver who transferred to Pioneer for his last season of high school  whose name I can't remember and all the others Coach Rodriguez led to multiple Big Ten titles.

People act shocked that 5* RB recruits aren't lining up to play for Harbaugh/Michigan every year. It is a lot easier to understand when you look at the recent history of running backs that have come through Michigan:

  • Last 1000+ rusher: Fitzgerald Toussaint (2011). Undrafted free agent on Steelers' practice squad.
  • Last drafted RB: Mike Hart (2008). 6th round, #202 overall.

Plus, the 2 most recent high-profile RB recruits in Derrick Green (5*, #4 RB, #27 overall), and Kareem Walker (4*, #5 RB, #106 overall) haven't had the most illustrious careers either.

These 17-18 year old recruits haven't seen a Michigan RB drafted since they were 7-8 years old, or even a relevant RB since they were 11-12 years old.

I mean, if we're gonna be honest here there's really no Michigan running back that has done really well in the NFL for very long. But you could say the same for OSU I suppose too. We'll see with Zeke.

And I'm hoping we see Walker get more carries this week. Still scratching my head how they said "Hey Walker you're in!", He rips off a first down, then they were like "nah you're good" for the rest of the game. What was that about?

I hated Eddie George.  Everytime I watched that guy he'd run into a pile for 3 yards, 25-30 times a game.  It was the most boring thing to watch.

What made it worse was Madden always saying "he's a bruiser, feed him 25-30 times a game to wear down a defense."  NO JOHN, HE'S GETTING 3 YPC HE SUCKS.

I'm still not over that

...the year before Zeke arrived, the rotting carcass of Darren McFadden ran for over 1,000 yards (at 4.6 per carry) behind that offensive line.  Despite Matt Casell, Brandon Weedon, and Kellen Moore getting 12 combined starts at quarterback.

I'm pretty sure there are a handful of MGoBloggers that could have a 300-yard season in Dallas.

I love having Harbaugh as our coach, but I do not understand the snark for RR (or to the extent I do understand it, I loath it).  RR got a raw deal at Michigan, much of which was outside his control, with everyone from Lloyd Carr to the Detroit Free Press to former players undermining him from day 1.  When people complain about his offense not performing in big games, they forget that Carr left the cupboard pretty bare (and encouraged what was left in the cupboard to leave) and that he never had a QB for more than a year:  Year 1:  Threet, Sheridan (wow!); Year 2:  Forcier (potential but a head case); Year 3:  Denard.  If he had a second year with Denard, it might have gotten to the point where there was some consistency, but we will never know and, instead, only saw Denard regress under Hoke.

Regardless, RR worked hard to try to bring a good team to Michigan, with his record improving each year and with things looking up for year 4 when he was fired by the great AD, Dave Brandon.  Give him a break.  The point was that he now seems to have a great QB.  Good for him, and congratulations for finding him.

If Devin could've played for RichRod, our offense would've been sick.  If Devin could've played for Harbaugh, he might have been able to get a look as an NFL QB.  Instead he's playing football in China.

Also, I was always a RR defender, but man that defense was a train wreck.  They played hard, but there were too many breakdowns for a Power Five team outside of Rutgers.

Another thing.  Take a look at the drive chart for the 2010 UM-OSU game.  You'll see an offense that constantly was in position to score points in the first half and shot their feet off with turnovers in plus territory or having to go for it on 4th down because they had a shaky FG kicking situation.  The offense under RR was close to figuring things out.  That's why Hoke had a honeymoon that first year with the offense.  They had to stick with a lot of the spread concepts because it's what they were used to.  When they did not, the Iowa game happened.

Maybe instead of looking at this like RichRod this and that, I'm looking at it like hey this QB who "wasn't good enough to play" in front of the other guy is surprising people and killing it.

I wish we could just find out with Peters, instead of assume he's not good enough now. Just start him in 1 game please!

One thing I very much appreciate about how WolverineHistorian, parkinggod, and WD make their highlights is that they just show the highlights. So many times I'll see something like 2009 USC-Oregon mentioned so I'll go on youtube to find highlights of the game, and every highlight posted is some 18 year old jabroni with some garbage rap / alternative blaring over top of it.

This kid will be a star under rich rod. College offense is not that hard. It's an extension of high school really. Recruit great athletes and get them schemed into space. Videos like this make it look as simple as it can be. The music is Lil Pump. That dude is a Miami "Trap" Rapper and pretty out there. BUT kids listen to him and that is why his songs are on highlight videos.

Michigan would take off. It all starts at QB. Harbaugh makes comments about guys doing a good job managing the game. We need a stud at QB to win. Harbaugh has won with stud QBs. Until we get that...it's going to be a bit of a struggle. Michigan deserves a stud QB and should field one every year all things considered. We need to find one and groom him sooner than later. Until then...the offense will be up and down. QBs are everything in college....unless you're Bama

Rich Rod's college offense is not that hard when you have a QB like Khalil Tate. Rich Rod's offense is an extension of some high schools' offenses, really.

There are all sorts of college offenses out there, each with merits and problems associated with them.  Some are relatively easy to understand, while some are pretty complex.

It is not hard to have an explosive offensive in college football today, if you have an explosive athlete at QB. High Schools are filled with explosive QBs who can run and throw the ball.  Who master spread offenses and can start day 1 in college.  As long as we are in a pro style offense it is going to take extremely good QB recruiting to land one of those 2-3 QBs who can actually run the offense at an elite level. Not to mention finding the OL that can line up and maul defenses with 8 in the box.

Exactly

I mean even look at Harbaugh's best years in the NFL. He had Kap and ran pistol/Power Spread concepts and lit up the NFL. I always assumed he would look for similar QBs that could run that type of offense.  I'm hoping Milton can refine his tools enough and be the guy.  Because if this O is going to continue to revolve around 15 yard deep routes, and 22 personell formations forever, we may continue to see the same issues.  Defenses are just too good nowadays and 90% of high school players aren't running anything that looks like our present offense.  Look at Bama, Saban changed his offense for a reason!

I don't know if we have to go all the way to the Rich Rod & Pat White end of the spectrum though.  Harbaugh gets dual-threat guys that can freeze one player every play; like a DE with Bootleg action.

I don't think Harbaugh has brought in one statue at QB yet.  All these guys have at least Alex Smith speed.
