Great Quote By Brandon on the ND Night Game

Submitted by DamnYankee on

This is a great quote by Brandon. It merely reinforces my belief that we are in good hands with him at the helm.

On the first night game at Michigan Stadium in 2011 against Notre Dame: " Well, change is good. Clearly there's a part of me that wanted to make a statement. The reality was, I did a little research. We had been on the road 33 times all the way back to 1944 and we're always the team on the road, and we're always the ones flying home at 3:30 in the morning. We're always the ones playing on prime-time national TV in front of hostile crowds, screaming at us, and thankfully we've done really well. We've won two-thirds of those games. But the reality is we've never had the opportunity to let somebody else feel what that's like. I like the idea that Notre Dame can come to Michigan Stadium and feel what that atmosphere is going to be like on national TV, prime-time. Let them fly home at 3:30 in the morning."

I was at that game and when michigan was down what? like 20 pts with 5 minutes left, the people in front of us left and we contemplated leaving. We stayed around for the onside kick and the party was started after that.

Down 27-10 with about 7 minutes to play. Lloyd settled for a FG, which sent (even more) people heading for the exits. Then we recovered the onside kick and it was on. Game was a 3:30 start, ended after 8pm. Unseasonably warm late October weather (over 70 degrees at 3:30) gave way to friggin cold weather in OT - temps under 50, IIRC.

EDIT: I recall the weather because: I wore a long sleeve t-shirt and jeans, thinking that the warm weather was a tentative blessing,  My then-17-year old cousin from LA was in town for his first UM football game.  He dressed similarly.  By the end of the game, we were freezing our asses off, stomping our feet and clapping our hands to both (a) cheer for the team; and (b) keep warm.

For some reason I thought you meant Brandon Graham when I clicked on this thread, which got me really excited.

Brandon Graham is the Golden Mouth to me...anything that he says is the gospel and should be taken as truth.

Damn.

In any case, I like what David Brandon is doing so far. Let's hope he can steer this ship in the right direction.

Clearly, we do not want RAWK music. We can be more than hostile and crazy enough without it.

But what we DO need, definitely, is something that will get the crowd going. I kid you not, I want to get a live, headlining metal band to do a heavy version of The Victors with the MMB at halftime. It'll be like Hendrix performing the Star Spangled Banner. Are their any famous rockers out of Michigan?

..but it would be great to see the Godfather of Punk, Iggy Pop, rile up the crowd. Not only is he from Ann Arbor, but it is rumored that he was the Ann Arbor High School (now called Pioneer) Class Valedictorian as a senior.

It would be a nice promotion: the Godfather of Punk meets the Godfather of the Spread Option.

...end his performance by crowdsurfing up the student section?

Another A2 native rocker, Pioneer alum, and Detroit icon would not be nearly as cool.

[ed. Don't get me wrong: I love Seger and when I was in junior high, I wore out my copy of "Live" Bullet. I'm just not sure that he connects with "kids these days." Now, Iggy Pop doing I Wanna Be Your Dog crosses many generational boundaries.]

You don't need to patronize me. If you think the student section is going to be excited about Iggy friggen Pop, you are nuttier than a squirrel turd.

...with Bob frigging Seger, yeah, I think they would like that a little more. Chill the hell out, buddy. I thought Wyoming was supposed to be all peaceful-like and nourishing to the soul.

It's bizarre to see how seriously you're taking this.

Throw em all in there. Kid Rock, Uncle Ted, Kiss, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Iggy Pop, Andrew WK, and why not Jack White and Eminem? The stadium probably wouldn't survive that performance.

I vaguely recall that some are Michigan fans, others are just from the State of Michigan.

BTW, did you purposely leave Madonna out of the list? And what about Motown sound?

Lastly, I wonder what it would cost . . . would any of the bands do this for a nominal fee and a free suite or two for the day, or is there a huge payout?
