We Couldn’t Have One Without the Other

We can do this because people support us. You should support them too so they’ll want to do it again next year! The show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan we’d be talking to ourselves.

Our other sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Peak Wealth Management, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Michigan Law Grad,Human Element, Lantana Hummus and new this week introducing Ecotelligent Homes

---------------------------------

1. The Offense

starts at 1:00

Can Brandon Peters get three yards per attempt? The moment O’Korn threw into double-coverage when the other guy was wide open on a two-man route (!!!) was an offense to the game of football. Let him play out Penn State then break in the kid against Rutgers. Running game was good against a good run defense: RBs actually got yards, Onwenu looked like he had a good game.

2. The Defense

starts at 25:15

Another mostly dominant performance. Poor damn Rashan Gary. Pass rush nerfed: Indiana got their starting RT back. Also teams are adjusting to doomsquirrel. Cornerbacks are all turning into stars.

3. Special Teams, Feelingsball, and Game Theory

starts at 45:07

The bad man yelled at the refs. Indiana got a bunch of bad ones too. Half of it was legit. Game theory: turtling at the end of the first half is fine when your quarterback is getting 2.9 YPA. Put Peters in the game when you’re up 10 and getting sub-Sheridan performance.

4. Around the Big Ten with Interrupted Jamie Mac

starts at 1:01:27

Big Teeeeen! Bad QBs win all the games. Start with Rutgers with a Big Ten victory over a team that might not deserve to be called that anymore. Zero interceptions for Tanner Lee vs. Ohio State, still 600+ yards for Ohio State, which scored on their first eight drives (avg 73 yards per drive). Maryland back to their linebacker at backup QB. Michigan State found a worse QB to play against than John O’Korn in a rainstorm. LJ Scott ran for 200 yards but lost a fumble. Michigan-Indiana was the most-watched college football game yesterday.

The excuses for the poor QB play have reached the level of "pathological". Clearly it is a very difficult position to play. Just as clearly, Speight and O'Korn have demonstrated gross deficiencies in playing the position. I believe Harbaugh is a wonderful college football coach but here he needs to rethink what he "knows". He may be in a world that is counter-intuitive to what his previous experiences have taught him.

You're talkin' about a podcast!!! Not time for such foolishness. I'ld note that I've likely forgotten more than you've ever known...but that might not be such a good thing  :)

Seriously, the only long podcast I would ever consider listening is...well, can I say Balas and Skene? Have never heard anyone approach their analysis...so I don't listen to any others any more.

Maybe I'll give them 5 minutes...maybe.

is that this team with an average right tackle and an average QB is undefeated and potentially a playoff contender. Like, not even "Jake Long and Tom Brady," but "Mark Huyge and Brooks Bollinger" might be enough to do it.

Here is the thing. Other Freshman or Redshirt freshman QBs have been playing across the country. Not just this year but for the last few years. PSU white out game is not ideal for a first start. Probably the worst Big Ten scenario other than maybe at OSU in cold conditions as your first start.

However, if we are going to just hand off 75% of the time, why not let Peters do that? Is Peters basically Russell Bellomy? Harbaugh has been treating him that way. I am surprised the Michigan insiders have not given a real explanation to my knowledge re: the QB situation. If Peters was doing fine in practice I would think a current player would have told a family member and that would have been relayed to someone in the media. Just a weird situation and sucks to not even have mediocre QB play with this defense.

How many of those freshmen QB have a shakey O-line, freshmen WR and a poor running game?

Put Peters on the 1999 Michigan team, he would do fine. He doesn't have the supporting cast. I don't want to see him get killed and have Gardner PTSD for the rest of his career.

O'Korn for PSU, then try Peters against Rutgers.

Just FYI Brian, "Baby up in this bitch" signs/stickers for cars aren't meant to deter people from crashing into cars with babies. It's so that after someone crashes into your car, first responders know to look for a baby.

We have all said that Speight is not a great QB.  Speight went 21-35 for 189 passing yards and no INTs last year against PSU.  That is not great, nor is PSU's defense.  Granted, playing in State College at night is a difficult place to play and PSU is a good team offensively.  I don't think PSU's defense is anything special though.  All Peter's has to do is be able to do check down to a secondary reciever and hit open recievers with better consistency than Speight and O'Korn have.

I'm still flabbergasted at the notion that there was an intense QB battle, not to mention that JOK credits Pep Hamilton with turning him into a competitive QB.  How horrible can the other QBs on the roster be that they can't hand off the ball and throw more than 50% completions?

For all the people pointing to true freshmen and redshirt freshmen QBs performing well:

1) You need to take into account the team around them. Do they have strong O Line play? Or a super reliable bell cow RB or WR target with a huge catch radius? Or a simple offensive scheme specifically designed to reduce the burden on the QB? Because we have none of those.

2) We do have selection bias as well. Nobody talks about the penny stock tip where they lost their ass. Nobody brags on social media when they eat an entire pizza in their underwear and skip the gym. For every freshman QB starter that is pretty good or a Heisman contender, my bet is there are a good 20-25 that are just terrible.

That doesn't mean BP shouldn't get a crack at playing. But I don't think it's some coaching malpractice if the coaching staff hasn't given him a start yet either.

Play JOK for PSU and hope we get Purdue JOK. Then start liberally playing Peters against Rutgers and see how the kid does.

The playcalling seems to get conservative once we build a lead....  yet when Harbaugh first got here it felt differently as if he were trying to step on their throats repeatedly and attack.  Remember that first year? It sure as heck wasn't this incessant runs into walls and five yard outs..... this dynamic between Drevno and Hamilton isn't good...and whoever is calling the plays, needs to ATTACK DOWNFIELD.  Attack downfield until success, and then when they keep their safeties back, run delayed handoffs.... instead we are trying to impose ourselves inside until they stack box, and the defenses are, but then we aren't ATTACKING DOWNFIELD.

Don’t you think there’s a reason they aren’t blowing people out like that? They just aren’t as good. And seemingly every time they go for a big throw they aren’t connecting. I sure as hell wouldn’t be attempting to take deep shots all game if the players don’t seem to be making those plays. I’d like to see the TEs get involved more and I’d also like to see Peters get his shot. Other than that let’s hope the run game can continue to work while the passing game hopefully improves.

This season is the first time I've really started listening to these podcasts, and they are tremendously informative and entertaining. I know there are commenters here who are former players or coaches and have genuinely good knowledge of football, but there are many, many who really do not and often have knee jerk reactions that are just dumb. For those people, these weekly breakdowns of the previous game should be mandatory.

Keep up the good work guys. Every Monday now my dog loves me because we go on a long walk and listen to the MgoPodcast.

Sometimes I wonder if Harbaugh knows too much, especially at the QB position and that's what the kids have trouble picking it up.  I think maybe the stuff he's putting in for them is too complicated.

What perplexes me is that O'Korn throws a great ball - he's got a strong arm, nice release, good spiral, and the ones that are reasonably on target seem catchable.  His decision making is just horrible. If I didn't know any better and saw him make a few throws I would be like 'he looks good' until he throws it directly to an opposing defender.  Weird sport, tough position.
