All the forehead kisses for Don Brown

Kinnel is the weak link of the defense and was bailed out when Simmie Cobb didn’t establish himself back into the field of play, because he got absolutely shook on the run after catch. He also missed a couple tackles in open space from trying to lay the lumber instead of wrapping up.
Hill is an absolute star at this point and had his man locked down all day. Metellus had a frustrating moment when he got his soul juked out of his body on the sideline, leading to the eventual Indiana TD.
Hurst was an absolute monster on the interior, allowing Brock Huard to show off how little homework he did before the game when he claimed that ‘Hurst was playing his way into the NFL’.

tackling must improve all around. and while the D didnt totally dominate and had some weak lapses, they obviously still played well enough to win. so hopefully theyre able to shake off the errors and try to ball out at psu...bc theyll need to

Hope all the injuries heal up by next weekend

But lack of depth showed at the end
October 14th, 2017 at 4:13 PM ^
the D down by the end of the season. M's O puts the D in difficult situations game after game. This presents a potential psychological or morale issue as well as a physical one.
D has nobly risen to the occasion time and again, but it's a very tough spot to be in. All hail Don Brown.

Too many penalties

That last PI call on Long was laaaaaaaaate. They let The Indiana receivers get away with offensive PI all game and called our defense on absolutely everything.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:10 PM ^
I have to agree but still this was an awful lot of penalties today in both sides of the balll. 16 I think.

simply excellent. Pick by Lavert Hill was one heckuva play. We have a lot to lot forward to with this young secondary and our Defensive coaches. Don Brown !

ends this game early. Didnt play their best but did more than enough to win comfortably. Tackling was bad though.

That is currently saving the program.

Seemed like less QB pressure than we are used to seeing? Just fear/respect for a running QB maybe?
October 14th, 2017 at 4:07 PM ^
Defense wore down. They can only respond so many times to 3 and outs.
They gritted out the final plays.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:07 PM ^
They had and made the plays at the end when needed. Our ineptitude on offense wore them down. They go as hard as they can in every play.

These guys are going to keep getting better and better. Gary was Gary. Mo was a monster. LOVE this defense!!
GO BLUE!!

Don't let the scores and stats dissuade you. This is a great defense.
With out this year's team isn't going anywhere.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:15 PM ^
plenty of weaknesses that a good O will take advantage of... we will see how PSU carves them up.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:12 PM ^
The D has been pretty sure handed when tackling this season, but today was ugly. Hopefully it is an outlier and we can get back into form tacklingwise. Make even one or two of those tackles and Indiana isn't in this game.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:13 PM ^
No more prevent. Fine with aggressive man to man defense even if it draws some flags. Be nice if they weren't calling literally everything on us though.
Corners eliminated Simmie Cobbs, and he is a great WR so that's impressive. Really great work from all three of them, but especially Hill. Safeties on their slot guy was a bit of a weakness. Worried a little about open field tackling from the safeties, though Metellus recovered from his biff on the first TD drive to make a couple nice ones.
Overall just fine.

will hold up to OSU, and PSU. They may keep us in the game against Wisc. but not all game long.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:14 PM ^
Give Zordich whatever money he needs to stay here.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:14 PM ^
I don't care how great a defense, you can't expect them to make every play. A competent offense will scheme to get match ups like McCray out wide on a RB or run away from the side of Gary. Also they are on thr field way too much because our drives (outside the first drive) are not sustained drives.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:22 PM ^
Gonna wear down if the O can’t help them
October 14th, 2017 at 4:22 PM ^
I get that it's unpopular to say negative things about this defense since they are clearly the strongest unit on our team, but there are some reoccurring issues that I've noticed over the last few weeks.
When we don't blitz, our pass rush is somewhat suspect. I have noticed this the last few games. We struggle to get home way too often when we rush only four. Also, for as good as our defense is, we seem to give up a lot of touchdowns in the redzone. MSU was 2 for 2 last week. Purdue and Indiana both did better than I think most would like. I am just surprised that such a good defense has seemingly struggled to hold teams to field goals in the redzone.
Again, I know it's unpopular to criticize this defense, but they are not perfect. With that said, they are the only reason we are 5-1, and they are being put in pressure situations week after week.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:30 PM ^
But with the game on the line, and a first and goal on the three, they sure as hell suffocated the Indiana offense. It looked like they were in the Indiana huddle on the last play, maybe five guys there defending the play.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:34 PM ^
When facing a mobile qb, the line holds back. We would be outraged if he would have run for 1000 yards
October 14th, 2017 at 4:35 PM ^
We have the top defense in the country. I'm not saying it's perfect either, but it's about as close as humanly possible to being just that.
What are you looking for in a defense exaclty? We are one 5 TO/weather catastrophy game away from being undefeated, and that's pretty much due to the defense alone.
October 14th, 2017 at 5:19 PM ^
They played with a lot of less pressure today. Indy spread them out and they had a linebacker (mainly Bush) sit back and spy the qb.
October 14th, 2017 at 8:09 PM ^
with most of this. Excellent defense, but some cracks, in the armor showing recently. Still SO happy we have them.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:30 PM ^
On EXACTLY how far all-world defense can get you with no help.
October 14th, 2017 at 4:40 PM ^
Recent Florida seasons indicate that it can win you a shitty division, get pasted in the conferennce title game and then lose to Michigan in a pretty prestigious bowl game.
October 14th, 2017 at 5:25 PM ^
Just saw the first pass in the goalline stand again. Brandon Watson covered two guys and made both throws look bad to Ramsay. He probably had the shallower one, but Watson made it a question AND made the deeper option hard. Great play by him. He was also the guy who jammed Cobbs right to the sideline on the play that was a long completion but out of bounds. Nice game..

this "fanbase" makes me sad. so much hate and general unpleasantness, it is truly offensive.
October 15th, 2017 at 3:50 AM ^
Not much to say except they are the best defense in the country. Period.
The fact that they could do that well with little/no help is unbelievable to me. They will continue to win games for us. If our offense can get even somewhat together, we are deadly. That's just how good they are.
If you want to get super nitpicky, I'm just wishing they could break through and help the offense by scoring us points, but obviously that isn't really in their control, and not something I will legitimately complain about.

is this thread even necessary?
if you have a defensive hot take, you are probably a nutcase.
