MBB: Tidbits! We have tidbits!
I don't want to take away clicks from UMHoops - please read the article for yourself - but here are some highlights:
*Coach Beilein is happy about the defense.
*Charles Matthews has been rebounding well.
*Coach Haynes is high on Jaaron Simmons (who is from Dayton, which means he is a good hearted person who can build a rudimentary airplane if needed).
You can access the full series of radio interviews that the UMHoops article is based on via the link.

God I love our basketball program. It's clean, it's hard working, and our coaches know how to coach
October 13th, 2017 at 12:54 PM ^
That B1G tourney run last year was one of the most rewarding experiences as a fan that I've had in any sport at any time.
October 13th, 2017 at 3:34 PM ^
That was some ESPN 30 for 30 sh%T!
October 13th, 2017 at 12:58 PM ^
I mean, you would not have had many people that were able to say this January of this year.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:35 PM ^
Unlike our football coaching staff so far, Beilein has an uncanny ability to change up his coaching midway through the season and elevate the team when it needs it the most.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:42 PM ^
Absolutely. Never forget that this is a guy who won a Big Ten championship with Zack Novak playing the 4.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:51 PM ^
Hate hearing that as if he did so in spite of Zak when in reality that dude was the heart and soul of the program for 3 years.

Oh yeah, I love Zack to death. I just say it because he was playing so out of position.
October 13th, 2017 at 3:25 PM ^
I hear you on that end for sure. I never got used to the fact that he could hold his own down low against damn near anybody going into each game but the result was more often than not very impressive, save for Blake Griffin.

and the football program have essentially done 180's in 2017.
October 13th, 2017 at 2:47 PM ^
with your use of "our"
October 13th, 2017 at 4:00 PM ^
I’d add “collective” to that list too.
I think many of us were never as down on basketball last year as others and just as many aren’t down on football this season.
Maybe we just need some reversible shirts that say “Fire Beilein” on one side and “Fire Harbaugh” on the other. Maybe a special tag too so we can always identify those people.
October 13th, 2017 at 4:50 PM ^
Thank you.
Count me OUT of that statement.
1. People were literally ready to FIRE Beilein last year and it wasn't just Maizen. I remember at least 3 threads on here questioning whether or not he should be coaching after the season. (I didn't start any of the threads, but hell I was fed up like many others - however I see a huge difference from that...to this)
2. Our football team was ASS before Harbaugh. We've had 1 all-time ELITE defense and another one (this year) that is closer to that elite defense than anything else we've seen in 20 years.
3. MSU was a HORRIBLE loss. Worst of his tenure and our inability to have a quality backup QB is infuriating. But it was ONE loss. Iowa last season is the only other one that compares.
4. Stop bitching about Harbaugh. Who else would you rather have? We have one of the 5 best coaches in the country with Don Brown on his staff. Saban, Meyer, Swinney, and Petersen aren't coming. So who is such an upgrade?
5. *MOST IMPORTANT* Why do we have to put football down to lift basketball up? I'm glad we have Beilein over anyone in the country. I'm equally happy to have Harbaugh.
Harbaugh and his staff have developed plenty of talent. They run a clean program. They've had just as much success as MBB has had under him (in the same period). If you want to compare...go look at year 3 under Beilein and compare that to Harbaugh.
But why is it one or the other? We've got BOTH! We should be happy about that. We've got 2 great coaches who've led their respective programs out of some dark times.
Should've locked the thread after the first response. It was spot on.
..and "oh" (in my Lalas voice)..."get off my lawn."

I had more upvotes to give.

Yup--solved that problem by upvoting you too. Great post.
October 13th, 2017 at 6:01 PM ^
Yeah, less than a year ago people were wishing for a basketball version of Harbaugh and now suddenly people want the football version of Beilein?
October 13th, 2017 at 7:18 PM ^
That's it, close it down
/thread.

The FBI loves the SEC/ACC long time
October 13th, 2017 at 2:10 PM ^
love that the program is clean, love how players go from relative obscurity to first round draft picks, love how they peak at tournament time......just don't love the gray hair and ulcers I get along the way.....
October 13th, 2017 at 12:47 PM ^
When we get tidbits about Ignas Brazdeikis, can we call them timbits?
October 13th, 2017 at 12:52 PM ^
Mmmmm Timbits and Tim Hortons Coffee
October 13th, 2017 at 12:58 PM ^
Day old timbits with that little bit of "crust" on them...
October 13th, 2017 at 3:18 PM ^
that sounds like something a fat guy would say lol
October 13th, 2017 at 3:58 PM ^
Well that's just entirely unfair. All I'm saying is day old timbits are better than fresh ones.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:00 PM ^
some of Charles Matthews Kentucky highlights. Three things jump out at me.
1) God, I hate Kentucky basketball
2) He looks like a really impactful rebounder for a wing
3) He is the kind of explosive rim finisher that we have been sorely lacking since GR3
October 13th, 2017 at 2:03 PM ^
I dated a woman in college I would likewise refer to as "an explosive rim finisher." Girl was a freak...
October 13th, 2017 at 2:11 PM ^
very naughty........got her number by chance?
October 13th, 2017 at 2:17 PM ^
She'd be 45 now. Probably more of a "gross boner diminisher" than an "explosive rim finisher" these days...
October 13th, 2017 at 4:00 PM ^
Hey, 45 is the new 42.
October 13th, 2017 at 4:31 PM ^
I'm 44, and it's the new 52

Thoughts on the upcoming season outlook for our basketball team?
Are we a top 10 or 15 team preseason?
October 13th, 2017 at 1:10 PM ^
Too many unknowns. If Wilson would have returned we would have been in the 10-15 range. We are probably in the 20-25 range based primarily on Wagner's return. We lost quite a bit of production from last year, but replace it with a good class, Matthews and Simmons. MAAR is still probably kind of meh. If he was going to really be an impact player it would have happened by now. He will continue to be a quality starter.
It depends on how these guys mesh. It is the kind of team that could be ranked like 22nd and then vault up into the Top 10 after a big win if it looks like they gel.
Our floor is the NCAA tournament. If Wagner becomes the type of player he can be, consistently, and Matthews and Simmons both work out well, our ceiling is a fringe BIG champ contender and a Sweet 16 seed.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:14 PM ^
Doubt it. Lost quite a bit from last year's team. If Wilson or especially Walton had another year I'd say we could be flirting with a top-15 ranking. Walton played as well as any PG in the country down the stretch last year.
My guess is we could come in the 20-25 range, or if we're unreanked, we'll be just outside the top-25.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:54 PM ^
a lot about basketball - love to watch it. I feel the weekness will be inside defense. If Wagner gets into foul trouble which he tends to do we have a void. I trust in the program and how they develop players so I suspect that will be improved. Guards and wings will be very solid and have depth - but inside defense...........
October 13th, 2017 at 4:47 PM ^
probably not, BUT come spring and the tournament after that Beilein jump and look the hell out opponents...
October 13th, 2017 at 1:00 PM ^
I'm thinking of getting my daughter season tickets. She doesn't really like basketball, but that will give me an excuse to go to some games.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:42 PM ^
We will be good for 13 minutes a game.
The first 5 minutes of each half before the refs call Mo for 2 fouls and the last 3 minutes of the game after auto bench is up.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:01 PM ^
Really tough OOC schedule but I can see Coach B having this team rolling come second half of conference play.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:06 PM ^
The season must not have started yet and we must not have lost a game because no one wants to fire Beilein!
October 13th, 2017 at 1:13 PM ^
Squads that can lose to a team whose home court is a YMCA, and beatdown G-League teams in the tourney. It takes a whole season for JB to turn the kids into the scariest team to play in a single elimination. I will take it every time.
October 13th, 2017 at 4:49 PM ^
I don't care about the start or even the middle. Just do enough to get to that tournament and unleash the seasoned trained dogs of Beilein's war machine.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:24 PM ^
Maizen hasn't made his way into this thread yet.
October 13th, 2017 at 1:54 PM ^
He's onto Harbaugh now. It'll be about a month.

Sounds like Maizen might actually like this team.
It's really hard not to get excited about basketball after reading that article.

Coach can't close on good recruits!!!
October 13th, 2017 at 1:15 PM ^
Never doubt Beilein, unlike some coaches he doesn't need 5 stars at every position to win championships and beat his rivals
