MGoBoard Preview: Michigan State

Submitted by mrkid on

It's Friday afternoon, I'm bored and dying for some more football discussion. I thought we could do our own MGoBoard version of Brian's "Cheap Thrills" from the preview column.

Submit your "Worry if..." moment(s) and your "Cackle with knowing glee if..." moment(s) for MSU. Here are mine.

Worry if...

- Devin Bush gets ejected for targeting

I'm worried the refs will be overly anxious with targeting calls in this game and because of the speed and intensity at which Bush plays the game, I could see him getting hit with a targeting and ejection.

I think we would see a drop off with the defense if Bush gets ejected. I would really hate to see this, mostly because I want to see Bush terrorize Lewerke and the Spartans.

Cackle with knowing glee if...

- O'Korn hits DPJ deep on more than one occasion.

I think if O'Korn can hit a deep ball or two to DPJ (or Gentry), we could really see MSU change what they do on defense and really swing momentum in our favor. I think their defense is vulernable to a player like DPJ getting behind them.

Prediction: Michigan, 27-13

Oh boy. You might wanna duck. After seeing the response from Mello's "Hype" video which featured that thing that happend that we don't mention, you might wanna take cover.

We had a play in highschool called intentional safety. It's what it sounds like, the QB runs to the back of the end zone and runs along it as long as he can and steps out before he is hit to avoid a strip sack. Anyways, we ran it out of a tight formation and everyone but the QB just holds like crazy. I only had a chance to run it one time in a game from our 5 or ten yard Lin's. We ran off about 15 seconds because everyone just tackled their man and the free defenders took a while to realize what the hell was going on.
I think a play like this where the QB starts in the shotgun and runs back and forth before chucking it as far as he could before getting hit would work at the end of the game 2 years ago. It should take up pretty much all the time leaving one dead ball play where the QB can kneel after waiting for however much time was on the clock. Or he could just run a fade but throw it out of bounds and deep.

Cackle with knowing glee if Winovich repeatedly beats Chewins and sacks Lewerke. Also if LJ Scott tries to run the ball and gets stuffed by Gary, Hurst, Winovich, Bush, Hudson, ... names rest of defense

Finally, three opportunities for me to look stupid Sunday:

MSU scores on their opening possession.

* Quinn Nordin hits a 50 yard field goal.

* Michigan, 20-15

Worry if...

I have run out of beer in the 1st quarter, and MSU is doing positive offensive things.

Cackle with knowing glee if...

I'm buzzed, have more beer, and Michigans defense has scored to help a somewhat capable offense.

Fugitive is smart here. Last year MSU schemed pretty heavily to run at Jabrill Peppers so that Peppers would have to eat beefy blockers at the point of attack. He wasn't overwhelmed, exactly, but when you have him assigned to just take out a blocker he's not doing the crazy athletic things he's known for. He was just a guy on those plays.

Hudson is in that spot this year, and we'll see if MSU tries to go after him. Bush at MLB is going to be tougher to outscheme. But based on last year I wouldn't be surprised to see MSU go after our athleticism with beef. Mone, consequently, will be a factor. If he can keep Bush clean, MSU won't be able to get anything done.

Fun post!!!

Worry if O'Korn reverts back to sad JOK or we lose a defender or two.

Cackle with knowing glee if we hit DPJ or other receivers on a fly route or two to burn the defense and open up their soft  underbelly.

Also cackle if there are more UM defenders in the backfield than MSU players on 90% of the plays

Score 27-6.  They'll get a couple FG's but that's about it.  Should I be wrong and they actually get a TD, it will be the only one as Harbaugh and Brown are the best 1-2 Offense-Defense punch in college football and will not allow a second.

I think UM wins by 2+ TD's. I'm predicting a 27-7 score.

The only thing that worries me is that the offense has had multiple turnovers in multiple games and that could keep the game annoyingly close. I'd really like to see them rectify that this game and to have less penalities. To this point the offense hasn't been very disciplined.

Worry if

- MSU front 7 keeps putting us behing the sticks, creating long 3rd downs, and Michigan going 0-6 on 3rd downs in the 1st half

Cackle with knowing glee if

- Michigan gets anything going on the ground. Game. Over.

Three opportunities to look stupid:

Michigan outrushes MSU 160 - 58

MSU gets 40 of those 58 rushing yards on their first drive of the game

Michigan wins 24 - 10

Worry if:

- Indiana OKorn makes an appearance

Cackle with knowing glee if:

- The terrible, wonderful, QB/RB-destroying Rashan Gary we all know is in there makes a stunning appearance

- Don Brown is still our DC

Worry If...

  • MSU gets two possessions inside Michigan's 35
  • John O'Korn reverts to Indiana John O'Korn after his first big hit.
  • Michigan's offense consists of two poor runs, an incomplete pass, and a punt, repeated 10 times.

Cackle with Knowing Glee If...

  • Devin Bush devours Brian Lewerke at the LOS every time he tries to scramble.
  • John O'Korn moves the team right down the field with simple pass plays
  • MSU puts together a desperate late drive to bring the scoreline within three touchdowns.

Three opportunities for me to look even dumber than the other prognosticators Saturday:

  • John O'Korn is mostly shaky but hits one huge deep play against their safeties
  • MSU scores on the first drive and that score keeps them within 7 points well into the third quarter
  • Michigan wins and we don't feel very good about our team afterwards.

Cackle with glee if --

Score Mich 20 MSU 10

Worry If:

  • MSU's running game is inexplicably ok
  • Michigan's offense looks like a hot mess again

Cackle with knowing glee if:

  • Don Brown is still our DC tomorrow
  • Pat Kugler figures out how to pick up a double A-gap blitz
  • JOK continues to find tight ends running wide open all over the field

Michigan 17-9
