OT - Michigan Cycling Team Kit Order

Submitted by XtraDurzzle on

Hey all, there has been interest in these orders before, so I'm posting this on behalf of the club.

The Michigan Cycling team is a Club Sport who competes in the Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference. Other teams in our conference include MSU, OSU, Notre Dame, Indiana, Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois, Case Western, Louisville, Northwestern, Cincinatti, Marquette, Miami (NTM), and a bevy of other small schools. Our conference also features a few schools that consider cycling a varsity sport including Marian and Lindenwood.

The kit order is once again live and this year they're added a couple more options.

These are the same exact uniforms that the team will be racing in next spring.

More information about the team can be found here: http://www.umcycling.org/

Prices do tend to run a bit high, but such is the nature of being a small fish in the big pond of paying university royalties and the like. Any proceeds go towards helping get team member's to races and most importantly nationals.

Also, we have switched vendors this year, and expect a massive step up in quality, as well as slightly reduced prices, so this is the year to order if you've been hesitant in the past!

The order closes on October 15th, and the kits will be delivered to you in mid-November.

Please note that because this is a custom order, there is no returns.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

This is spot on. That and the University was (still is?) picky about which vendors they'll let use the block M. In my time on/around campus I saw Voler, Canari, Jakroo, LG, Champ Sys, and Primal come and go. I definitely have my favorites (Jakroo), but I trust the kits are in good hands now.

I am interested. A couple questions.

  1. One thing I didn't seem to see was men's shorts that end at the waist . . . are all men wearing bib shorts all the time?
  2. Are there any helmets available? Obviously, it would be cool to have a bike helmet with a riff on the traditional football helmet design.

Thanks!

Comfort, fit, etc. The shorts stay comfortably in place, resisting the effects of constant pedaling motion and the hunched position road bikes require for good aero.

And, uh, keep the moon safely shrouded from view. The guy riding behind you benefits as well.

Yes, almost all men (and most women too) exclusively wear bib shorts these days. Pactimo does not even offer a Men's shorts option, otherwise we would have included it in the store along with the women's.

And sadly no helmets. We looked into getting custom helmets for this year, but most companies required 250 helmets (and some far more) at minimum so it was not feasible for us.

Our team helmet and glasses sponsor is Briko, so most riders use one of their products.

The guys tend to buy whatever fits them best, while most of the females (but a few guys as well) wear this particular model, although it looks like it's been discontinued for this year.

It looks like at least one Michigan cyclist was wearing a green jersey? Did I see something wrong? If so, that's pretty odd.

And yeah, it really is too bad they can't come up with something for helmets. I'd think with GoFundMe/Kickstarter, someone could try to come up with an order for 250 plus helmets, so that the team could get them, along with interested cyclists. The expense would be in the prototype design.

EDIT:  And several of you thought the same thing. Now it just takes one person with the capital to make it happen!

With the size of the Michigan alumni base and the winged helmet's iconic stature, I'm sure you could find away to order 250+ Michigan helments.  Maybe a kickstarter to get enough interested people and get the money before buying all 250 of them?

I don't bike that much, would certainly never buy a cycling outfit, but I'd definitely consider buying a Michigan bike helmet if the price was right and some of the money went to fund a Michigan club sport.

Edit:  I realized after typing this that the helmets competitive cyclists wear are probably considerably out of the range I would usually pay for a helmet.  If you put together an order for custom helmets would there be a way to have different models or would they all need to be the same line?  $200+ for a helmet would be steep but if you could also have a more affordable option for recreational types you'd find a ton of interest.  Especially if they offered kid's sizes.

Even at that price point I wouldn't put it past the Michigan fanbase to easily exceed the 250 unit minimum to get it ordered.  And if you were looking for funding for the team, a kickstarter for a $50 model that the team makes a bit on would sell like crazy.

I’m picky for fit and comfort. Very personal item. $200 is reasonable to save ur nut, but I’d want comfort, flow and MIPS. While you might get 250+ from Alumni, you might not. Admit I’m OCD about my gear.

I’ve got five Primal M items and will look hard at the new stuff.

Thanks for letting an old man look good!!!

First, thank you for posting this. I have one of the older jerseys that I received as a Christmas gift. I was really excited but the material is REALLY poor so I never wear it.

My hope is this is indeed a much improved fabric and if so, I will likely got one of the maize jersey. Do you know if the Long sleeve is a jersey or a jacket? As in the outer most layer for Spring and Fall riding.

Lastly, any chance you know if the Triathlon club does something similar? I’ve seen their kits at races before and I really liked them but they didn’t respond to previous inquiries.

Thanks again and Go Blue!

I also own the Primal and Champ Sys Jerseys, so I know from experience this is a much higher quality product. From others reviews, I hear it is far better than the LG jerseys.

The long sleeve is a jersey, the spring/fall jacket option would be the WX-D Breckenridge jacket.

The tri team supposedly does something similar, although I've also asked to hear when the order opens up and I have not heard anything yet this year.

I got a kit last year, including the arm and leg warmers, which I also got to wear to football games... Saturday night will probably be perfect to wear the warmers to.

I'd be so there for a winged bicycle helmet if I a) didn't already own a perfectly functional one and b) didn't live in Columbus and occasionally bicycle on its streets.

*cracks knuckles for my yearly cycling joke*

So ya'll are going to look real good ignoring stop signs and traffic signals.

Ahh, that feels better.

Anyway, I ride a little bit and and have been looking to get my first true road bike. Anyone have decent online reference tools or good local (A2) bike shops that can point me in the right direction?

If you're looking at buying new, I would suggest Wheels in Motion out at Washtenaw and Huron Parkway. I've had nothing but good experiences with them and they'll be super helpful as a first time buyer.
