Submitted by Chipper1221 on

This has been declared the deadliest mass shooting in this country's history. Lets all take a moment to send prayers to those affected. If you have loved ones in Vegas I hope they are safe. There is a hotline number to call if you cant get ahold of someone youre looking for

So sad. Unfortunately it is a terrifying reality that one or two random people could have such a drastic effect on the lives of so many. My heart goes out to all the individuals and families that are involved.

I thought about starting this thread, but I thought it would get too political too fast and get taken down.

Regardless, it really is terrible that any one individual thinks this is the way to make their mark on society. It happens way too often. Sometimes it makes me never want to go to a concert or sporting event again, because being in a crowd of people just seems extremely dangerous these days.

I hope the people who can recover can heal quickly.

It seems these events are most often tied to adolescent rage/rejection, terrorist ideology (foreign or domestic), or a sociopathic individual finally obtaining the resources to inflict maximum damage.

For someone to go 64 years on this earth and then commit such a heinous act doesn't seem to fit the mold of prior atrocities we have seen like this.  Absolutely horrible and don't want to take away from the reality of devastation of the outcome, but I am very curious about the history and psychological probile they come up with on this individual.

It was a good and tactfully written post. Thank you. Be aware that there are some mgousers who have criticized prayers in the past . . . they prefer the addition of "happy thoughts" or "good wishes." But still, your post was very apolitical, simply focusing on the sadness of this tragedy, and what to do if you have loved ones.Thank you.

The bigger problem is that oftentimes what needs to be done to address these issues is not social and/or politically that popular.  It's not that people want to see these types of atrocities continue, but at some point systemic changes need to be made and it's hard for people to make that next step.

Also, there are people of good mind and good will on both sides who disagree about how to reduce the frequency of these incidents. Some people are convinced that one way will lead to less violence; others are convinced that the exact opposite path will lead to less violence.

Yep.  And while I tend to believe one of those sides is wrong and has been so historically, I don't doubt that some of them do have good intentions and honestly believe.  But again, it takes a change in our worldview as a country that we have 100% shown to be unwilling to seriously address.

It's disrespect to one side or the other of the political debate, though, to call only one side "common sense." I don't know which side you're on, but it's disrespectful to dismiss the other side of such an important issue, especially one that has a long track record of good, intelligent people on both sides.

Wait...so are you saying you shouldn't malign people as "Stupid, hates America, Communist, Fascist, Cuck, SJW, literally hitler" just because you disagree with them? C'mon you know the internet! Everyone who doesn't think like me doesn't because they are evil!

This is exactly why we shouldn't do politics here. EVERYONE thinks "my politics aren't politics - they are just common sense! Only idiots / monsters / heartless kitten eaters would disagree with me!" So we all yell and get pissed off at each other in ways that help nobody, solve nothing, and ultimately just pile more bad feelings on an already awful tragedy.

Opinions are like assholes, etc etc.

Sincere condolences to the victims and their families, and best wishes for speedy recoveries to the wounded.

I actually agree with Bando for once, let's look at the recent numbers:

86!!! Dead in Nice, France, July 14, 2016

12 Dead in Berlin, Dec. 19, 2016

4 Dead in London, March 22, 2017

5 Dead Stockholm, April 7, 2017

20 Dead India, April 21, 2017

13 Dead in Barcelona, Aug. 18, 2017

We have to IMMEDIATELY BAN all Trucks and Vans before there is any more loss of life!!  There is way too much access to these weapons and everytime I leave a sporting event in a giant crowd I can't help but think we amy be next.  Until there is total control there will be no control.

Trucks and vans actually have another purpose besides ending lives, which is the functional purpose of a gun. It's nice that you can look at that handful of international events that involved one of the most necessary inventions of the 20th century and ignore the fact that more Americans have been killed by firearms in the last 50 years than in all of our wars combined, and that one single man was just able to wound 500 people and kill over 50 by himself. You don't have to be for immediately taking all the guns to want some degree of action to address the disease we have.

Politics aside, the thought of a big event in public is certainly terrifying. A place like Michigan Stadium, which holds 115K on a given weekend, seems like an enticing target for those with no regard for human life.

I have a 6 month old daughter. When I think of countless concerts, games, etc.. that I've been to, and how that may not be the same way for her when she is older, is a shock to the system.

Prayers to all those that are involved.

that it has taken this long for there to be a mass shooting at a concert or sporting event.  I can't be the only one that has been in a large crowd and thought "It would be really easy for some asshole to kill a bunch of people here".

This is heartbreaking and disgusting.

has a choice: you can do what the internet does, which is use a tragedy as an opportunity to spew a political/racial/religious diatribe of some kind and convince absoutely no one of your position while you sit back hoping that the gunman plays for whatever "team" you're not on, or...

just step back, let your head spin from the horror, and express a bit of solidarity with your fellow human beings.

And when there's some thread at the intersection of sports/politics, I'm almost always too happy to jump into the fray (and find you on the other side of it, often, right?) but something like this... I'm just bewildered and gut-punched. So, I hide here and hope MSU week makes me forget for a little while.

Of course the focus is on the victims of this horrible attack, but one cannot help but ask "can we do more to prevent this shit from happening?", and this question cannot be tackled without at least indirectly touching on politics.

(Also MGoBlog is not the place for that discussion, I am definitely not trying to start it).

But I was thinking more specifically about this thread on this specific website. It's funny how when I woke up to this news on the west coast, after a couple of clicks on the main news websites and as the rest of the internet commences with ripping each other's throats out, I came right to MGoBlog.

I wasn't hoping for an update, this is just where I come for a little bit of emotional shelter from a grotesque world.

I was at this event last year and there was literally nowhere for those people to go. Nearest parking for the majority of those people was across the strip at Mandalay Bay or Luxor. The other side of the festival was empty land from there until the airport. So people that were fleeing toward the direction of those hotels, shelter, or their cars were heading directly toward where the gunfire was coming from.

Best comprehensive reporting I've seen on the events. The videos are saddening:

I stayed at the Excalibur with family a couple of years ago, kind of cornering the Mandalay Bay.  That part of the strip is disorienting and claustrophopic (even more so than typical).  At any given time you don't really know where you are in relation to the rest of the strip.  You would feel like you were running in circles.

by design.....ever wonder why it takes 30 minutes to walk 3 blocks there and why there is very nearly nothing outside to see or do?

Because....every second you are outside you are not losing/spending $$.

The entire city is just a funnel or corral for people to drop their cash, right up until they leave.

not entirely sure that stuff like this should be "escaped" entirely.  I agree that when somebody posts a blantantly political topic that it should be removed but obviously this is something that is going to be talked about, heavily.  And it is possible that dropping that phone number helped a couple of people out.  There are always lots of people from Michigan is Las Vegas.
