ESPN Team Efficiencies Update, 2017 Week 5

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

The updated ESPN team efficiency ratings have been posted, and after its "Improvement Week", the Wolverines improve one spot from #23 to #22 overall based on no additional data. The U-M splits are offense, #97 (down from #79); defense, #4 (same as last week); and special teams, #35 (up from #42).

Of U-M's 2017 opponents, Ohio State wrests the mantel of most efficient from Penn State, moving up to #7 from #11. Penn State dropped one spot to #10, while Wisconsin slid from #12 to #15. Indiana dropped behind Michigan to #26 (from #19). Maryland responded well to its defeat last week, moving up 8 spots to #24 from #32. Sparty, at #53, is on the rebound after finagling a win over Iowa (up 19 spots from #72).

Overall, Michigan moved ahead of one more of its opponents this week. So, M remains rated lower than three of its opponents for this season, and most could probably guess who they are. Two in the top ten (up from 1), 5 are in the upper quartile of the ratings (same as last week); 9 are in the upper half (same as last week); and none are in the lowest quartile (Cincinnati and LOLRutgerz are at the threshhold).

Here's a brief synopsis of the ratings, or click the link above to see the whole list &/or sort by category:

Leaders And Best

Offense looks even worse after a couple teams have put it to Cincinnati and Air Force. Even Florida's defense is in the middle of the pack.

Only Kansas, Oregon State, Boston College, Rutgers, and Illinois have worse efficiencies on offense in the Power 5. Not company you want to keep.

I would think there is a pretty strong correlation between these standings after 5 weeks or so and the final numbers but I really have to think that this team is going to figure it out and get into the 40s or 50s by year end. Harbaugh is too competitive to let the offense continue to struggle like it has. The team has been so close to breaking out on several occasions and if that bad luck turns to mediocre or good luck for the next 8 games, things should be alight. Maybe not CFP alright but a good season alright.
