BBall Recruiting Roundup for 2018 & 2019

Submitted by Matt EM on

With the bye week in football, figured this would be the appropriate time to give a high level summary of the 18 & 19 classes on the heels of a huge pickup by Coach Beilein in EM Top 30 forward Ignas Brazdeikis.

Also of note - there is a decent possibility of some movement with an 18 Michigan commit in the near future that will impact the class.

things are pointing toward Castleton and one of Locke/Nunez.

Is already a great class, with the potential to be top 5 if things fall in place and we do in fact land Castleton and one of Locke/Nunez.

Three EM Top 100 prospects, with the potential to add another top 100 prospect and another (Castleton) that is likely to enter the top 100. Moreso than numbers though, is the depth of instant impact players - Johns, Iggy and Dave are all likely to see minutes as freshman since they have college ready frames and skillsets that I think translate instantly.

Have not seen Nunez play live, while I have seen a ton of Locke. My guy tells me I'd like Nunez a bit more, as he's got 3 inches on Locke, appears to be more athletic and embraces physicality  based on the limited film I've seen. Would like to add some size to our backourt considering Brooks, DeJulius and Simpson are all guys 6'0 and below.

That said, I could be totally off on this one as I openly acknowledge I have yet to see Nunez play live.

But the hope is that the overall talent and depth (which will be the best since the NC run in my opinion) may be able to compensate for the lack of a single elite player assuming the 18 lcass stays as is. I think Iggy/Jordan Poole will be primary creators at some point, although I don't think either are ideally equipped to be #1 options, but in tandem can be very effective along with the rest of the roster.

But I'm sure there's going to be some uncommitted kids revising their lists of possibilities. And there are also programs willing to pick up some other those "sloppy seconds". We've already seen a handful of decommits from the schools already fingered by the FBI; what about additional schools who might be named as the investigation continues? Not every decommit is "dirty"---some just won't want to stay with programs that are likely to be penalized for their misdeeds. There's bound to be some ripple effect as this whole thing plays out.

I would guess Taylor Currie in regards to the 2018 movement comment. They initially took him as a 2019 commit and he reclassified to 2018. Are they trying to get him to reclassify to '19 again?

want to be a downer - but while our 2018 class is looking terrific, if I read this article correctly, the writer was not optimistic about any of the 2019 prospects listed.

But Beilein always seems to come through - go get em, Coach!

Pure speculation here. We all know Beilein is one of the cleanest coaches in college basketball, and we know Umich is being super diligent toward NCAA rules, but what about our players? Is it possible that, for example (and a thousand apologies for singling anyone out on speculation) someone like Matthews, a former 5 star recruited by Kentucky, a school as likely to be named by the FBI as any other, could be tagged by the FBI? You can't control what some of these kids did in the AAU circuit etc. So maybe the OP is saying we could face some attrition due to individual behaviour despite our institutional controls.

Just admit that you're asking about Charles -- no need to hide it as a "for instance." It's a legitimate question. He is a 5-star from Chicago.

Matthews has great parents and he was the first player in UK's 2015 class to commit. He's the perfect fit for Beilein both in attitude and versatility.

The players who are susceptible to the predators described by the FBI don't come from families like his. It's the coaches and parents that are targeted by these people, and there's no way his family could be lured into that. So rest easy.

First off, good information and great timing during the bye week.

For the casual recruiting fans, it would be nice to have the player's position and height added in.

Also the gray font takes a bit of time to adjust to.  More of a font contrast would be easier to read.  Just my 2¢.

I love the talent Beilein brings in.  They fit his system and we'vehad some really good teams with those types of players.

I really think we're 1 special player away from competing with the best for titles soon.

Haynes was just in Charlotte Wednesday to watch one of my players. 6'7 PG Patrick Williams. He's #69 on the 247 composite with most of the non blue blood offers in the southeast. Working on getting him up for an unofficial
