ND v MSU - Who To Root For?

Submitted by Mike Damone on

This is no Sooners v Buckeyes, that was a no brainer.  A little more challenging decision here.

Reasons to root for Sparty – Watch Brian Kelly’s purple head explode, fun to see Sparty stick a dagger in ND again and again, good for reputation of BIG conference, helps ND look weaker in Midwest recruiting battles, and always fun to watch obnoxious Irish fans hang their heads in dismay.

Reasons to root for the Domers – See Mark D look grim and pissed, takes Sparty off the “we’re back” belief after 2 MAC wins, helps us look stronger in state of Michigan recruiting, and just fun to watch the Sparty fans with an inferiority, little brother complex get it stuck to them.

My Pick – Tough call.  Screw Sparty, and to hell with Notre Dame.  Hate them both with a passion.  Would like to see a close game with glaring mistakes on both sides, and the two teams inflict pain (no severe injuries) on each other.  Ultimately – I just love seeing Notre Dame lose.  May as well have MSU win before we take them down in 3 weeks.  Very, very slightly rooting for Sparty – but no big deal if they lose.

Interested in others perspective.

if that ain't happening, then State.  We play them; we do not play ND.  Plus, ND Shadenfruede is more enjoyable to me than Sparty Shadenfruede.  You can only see so many couches burn and listed to so much RCMB before it starts to make you stupid, too.  ND Nation after a Domer loss is a beautiful thing.

I always root against Notre Dame. OSU, MSU, Penn State ... wouldn't matter.

It's pretty easy in this case. ND is more of a peer institution (academic prestige, etc.) than Sparty is. As well, its fans are sanctimonious and annoying (except for the ones I meet in person, who are almost always delightful people ... odd).

Sat directly in front of a total a-hole ND fan at UTL I.  But he is a very rare exception.  Just about all of the ND fans I know personally are really good dudes.

I've only known 3 Notre Dame fans/grads in my life.  All 3 are/were all around great folks.

Both are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but ND still has the cache to win some recruiting battles against us.  MSU isn't stealing many, if any, recruits UM wants in or out of state while Harbaugh is around.

Hence, rooting for MSU.

THIS is dumb. Since we don't play ND, them losing doesn't have that big of an impact on us. We need MSU to be undefeated heading into our game and then we need to destroy them. Every opponent of ours needs to win every game except the UM game.

I also want to see MSU coming in full of pride and then get dismantled.

I apologize for having a "dumb" opinion on who I would rather see lose/hate more.

Will you now apologize for being a pathetic troll / loser with no life outside of following,  commenting, and harassing others on UM athletics on message boards?

Gracias

Don't care that much, but would like to see MSU win.

We play them so it will help marginally if they are ranked.

Recruiting doesn't matter against MSU. If they were a stock I would short them like crazy.

I would like to see Kelly fired and their program in disarray when we play ND next year.

I honestly don't really care who wins. I usually just root for a sloppy game in which both teams look disorganized and for a heartbreaking and stupid ending (eg loss on a penalty or Hail Mary last play of the game) that maximally crushes the loser's soul. The best thing about this game? I usually get exactly what I want.

I hope ND wins for a few reasons. 1) Fuck Sparty. 2) I want Brian Kelly to still be the coach at ND next year for Michigan to put a beatdown on him to open the 2018 season.

Also, Michigan doesn't need any help in the SOS department so MSU can lose every game before we play them for all I care

Seems to depend on how old you are and where you grew up or live now as to which team to root for in these situations. The older crowd usually says root against ND here. Being on the younger side and growing up near a lot of annoying ass Sparties, I will always root against MSU every single game.
