O/T Mayfield apologizes for flag plant
Obvious comparisons to Hoke's sheepish apology for the tent spike in Spartan Stadium. Come on man, own it!

Never go full Hoke

The damage is already done. Something far better would have been:
"We earned the right to celebrate. It's a 60 minute war out there. Losing stings. Losing by a lot stings. I understand that they're upset. We earned our celebration. If they don't like it, they should earn their own celebration next time."

It was a perfect scenario: insult them on the field and apologize later. OSU didn't exhibit much class when they beat Oklahoma, so they deserved what they got.
Mayfield looks like a leader as a player and a coaching candidate when he can't play anymore.

might affect the Heisman voters, so he's playing it safe. Doing it, but then apologizing for it.... still got to do it!

I would have liked a Happy Gilmore apology better:
"You see the flag pole is made of wood and wood comes from the ground, so I thought the pole would be happier in the ground. Also, I know buckeyes come from trees, and flag poles are made from trees, so I thought the two of them would be natural friends"

Do you remember the reaction on this blog when Sparty players ran the Paul Bunyan trophy past the student section after the kick/misery? I do. What I don't remember was anyone saying, "It was a 60 minute war and they earned the right to celebrate."
It's either a dick move to do this stuff, or it's OK when opposing players taunt us in our stadium. Gotta pick a side. (I choose dick move if that isn't clear).

Isn't the whole point of taunting to antagonize? So, of course you'll feel antagonized when it happens to you, and the hope is to make the other team feel that way when it happens to them.

Wow. What a sissy. Also, he didn't plant it. He tried, but didn't. Field turf, bro.
It was still cool, though.
September 11th, 2017 at 2:53 PM ^
booed him?
September 12th, 2017 at 4:57 AM ^
Agreed. Calling someone a sissy is SO gay.

The apology should've been to the OU fans for SUCKING at the flag plant, not the plant attempt itself.
"Dearest fellow Oklahoma Sooner fans & alumni:
I, Tyler Mayfield, suck at flag planting. I'm sorry I failed all of you so badly at sticking that flag right through the O on the 50. Next time we smoke thiese assholes trust me I'll do it right.
Yours in BoomerSoonerdom:

Might be a cousin of Jake Ruddock.

OU's QB is Baker Mayfield. Mayfield's is a fair-to-middling brand of ice cream, popular in the South. Ty Cobb was from Georgia (and nowhere near as bad a man as portrayed in the bio-pic).
So what MGrowOld is saying is that if Baker Mayfield had brought some ice cream, it would have allowed him make a mound of Extreme Moosetracks in which to better tie (Ty) down the flagpole into the field turf.
It's pretty damned clear when you think about it.

I disagree. You just need a sharper flagpole, or an auger. So the apology should be for not being prepared with the proper equipment.

I have a feeling this was about as sincere as Mel Gibson's apology after his anti-semitic comments...

Not only that, but who the hell has a random spike laying around?

Apple and orange comparison... The railroad spike was planted BEFORE the game. Mayfield's flag planting was done after the game. They both were good ideas, but for different reasons.
The apologies, though? They were both dumb, sad, and stoopid - all for the same reasons.

Lame. He should've doubled down.
September 11th, 2017 at 1:41 PM ^
Boo this apology. Wait, is that allowed here?
September 11th, 2017 at 1:44 PM ^
Him, he is an amateur athlete. Booing doesn't make a guy, not try to plant a flag.
September 11th, 2017 at 1:51 PM ^
Blue-Chip, you need to issue an apology for that statement immediately.
September 11th, 2017 at 2:52 PM ^
What has two thumbs and no shame? This guy.

he was probably ordered to give that apology
September 11th, 2017 at 1:48 PM ^
for the lame stick so that the it just limply toppled over. And perhaps that it wasn't flaming at the time.
September 11th, 2017 at 2:08 PM ^
You can't stick a flag in field turf. Trying was dumb.

Wow what a something-other-than-masculine-but-not-at-all-feminine dude. (EDIT: I mean, individual)

Why apologize? Did Ohio State apologize to Michigan when they tore down the M Club banner in 1972? I don't think so.
Every Buckeye fan who called such an act by Mayfield disrespectful need to be reminded of their own classless history.
September 11th, 2017 at 2:40 PM ^
'73. No apology that I'm aware of. And they tried it at least two other times - '75 and '77. Dr. Sapp: (http://mvictors.com/not-on-my-watch-when-the-m-men-defended-the-banner-…).
September 11th, 2017 at 2:09 PM ^
That's what I said Saturday night.
Ohio State players and fans also tore down a goal post on Indiana's home field in 1996 when they wrapped up the Rose Bowl birth causing the Indiana players to rush to the other goal post just to stop them doing it again.
Decades of dishing it out but you can't take it?
September 11th, 2017 at 1:50 PM ^
He had just become my favorite non-Michigan player. If you're going to do something like that, own it. I had no problem with it. And I wouldn't have a problem if he did it in Ann Arbor.
Don't like it? Good. Defeat is supposed to sting.
/now if someone could just email me a list of acceptable words to use as insults I'd really appreciate it. [email protected]

I'm sorry, was the fanbase who still celebrates ripping down the M Club banner 40 years later somehow a little butthurt over a flag being planted on their field?
September 11th, 2017 at 1:50 PM ^
your apology has been rejected, Baker.
You may now return to hero status among the Maize n Blue faithful...
