Snowflakes Thread: Offense Vs. Cincinnati

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

This will be the snowflake thread for the thoughts on our offense in the game versus Cincinnati.

OLine is abysmal. Speight is not good. WRs not getting separation, TEs dropping passes. Playcalling is definition of blah.

Offense is going to limit our ceiling again this year. Sucks

Pretty sure we'll here about how great the nose tackle was this game. Ulizio's inability to identify blocks and Kugler getting routinely run over were themes. Evans looked terrible. Isaac has wiggle on the outside but left a ton of yards on the field.

DPJ is fast. McDoom is fast. Crawford is elusive. Black can create seperation. Our TEs can rumble and bumble

All we need is for Speight to fricking throw them the ball. Underthrow it if you have to. He needs to just give them a chance.

Its horrible how far he has regressed. I dont understand how a QB can develop such a horrible overthrowing habit like this.

Peters isnt ready. O'Korn is too conservative. Speight IS our QB but my God he is pissing me off

Where did you see Speight missing those athletes besides the ONE throw to DPJ?

How many open receivers did we have all day against a shit team that was stacking the box? A couple? And speight nailed the deep throw to Crawford.

That's on the scheme. Why not more screens to our freak athlete WRs and twitchy RBs? Why not more deep shots? Speight is hitting them. Why is our red zone offense so terrible? Why not use our giant TEs and explosive WRs for fade routes, ever? Why do we call the PA Rollout with Black as the only option as a one-yard route on 3rd and long?

He had a nearly 60% completion rating. Twelve incompletions. Some of those were throwaways. One was a completion to Perry that was ruled incorrectly. Can you think of a bunch of others where receiers were clearly open? Maybe the wheel route to Hill? But it wasn't a terrible throw. Otherwise, our receivers were blanketed. We need a better passing scheme.

I was looking for overthrows of open receivers in this clip:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTETBWgR5po  They appear in the plays that begin at 8:16, 9:12 (debatable as to whether the receiver was open, but he had _no_ chance at making a catch because the throw was so high), 9:17 overthrew receiver who had some space toward the sideline in the endzone), 19:36 (overthrow that risked an interception), 27:16 (ending up out of bounds).

The O-line was a problem today.  Speight was a problem today.  Speight was a big problem today.  The O-line was a bigger problem than Speight today.

Will be easier to improve Speight than to improve the line.  Both will be difficult to improve.

It's sad that as a UM fan, I long for the days of Rudock, an Iowa grad transfer. Speight isn't the answer, and it worries me Harbaugh can't get Peters to an acceptable spot in year 2.

Speight can't pass well in the pocket under any sign of pressure. When any pressure comes he starts throwing inaccurately. Unfortunately, that has been often.

What else is there to say that hasn't already been said? The offense was awful, the OL was completely atrocious, Speight still can't consistently hit his receivers. Three out of every four throws is high. Can't even give his receivers a CHANCE to make a play.

Props to Isaac as he was the lone bright spot. He had a great game considering what the OL gave him.

If nothing changes, the offense will cost this team any chance it would otherwise have in the PSU, Wisconsin, and OSU game. Even the Maryland, IU and MSU games all look like toss ups now.

I think, in general, it turned out there was a massive overreaction to Cinci's last game to Austin Peay. They were still #73 overall on S&P and had the #39 ranked defense. They could be a decent team.

Still, very disappointing. The fact that Peters isn't close to Speight is very concerning. It looks like he might have been a miss. Hopefully, we hit on McCaffery and Milton. Speight is just playing like the middling 3 star recruit he was.  Very, very limited. We've missed on a few OT's too the last 2 recruiting classes and that, along with the Newsome injury, has hurt as well.

WR's/TE's look talented but very young. As expected. You'd just hope the offense would look better in year 3.

; or does he make him grad transfer so that the Peters/McCaffrey regime can begin!

not a religious man, but im praying this season is it for speight.

"This is still a meritocracy and Peters is one of Jim's guys."

You realize the inherent contradiction in this sentence, right? I agree that if Speight comes back, he likely loses the starting job. But it will have nothing to do with who is Jim's guy. And as Jim has himself said, they are all his guys.

I'll admit it felt hollow to throw that last bit in about Peters being one of Jim's guys. I intended for it to sound like a redundant argument more than a contradictory one. As if to say "it's likely that Speight will lose out due to it being a meritocracy...and btw Jim - Mr. QB guru - will finally get to have his hand picked guy out there."

Poor execution on my part.

I was just concerned with how unprepared the team looked on offense. Isn't that kind of Harbaugh's thing? Buttoning up every last detail to be better than the guy across from you and better than the guy behind you. Also, I would identify as a Speight guy. I will show humility on that front all week.

I long for the days of a QB that can tuck it and run when nothing is there. I'm shocked at the poor QB play in year 3 of Harbaugh. I have to wonder what is wrong with Peters. He should be serviceable at this point at least.

WS is kind of a tough one to figure out. His stats end up decent but he looks terrible on many throws via the eye test. I'm not saying bench him for a "serviceable" QB. I'm saying that I am surprised UM doesn't have an above average to elite QB playing right now. After a full year and 2 games of WS, I don't see it based on his performances against good teams. That is the issue I have with him having decent stats.

How many college QBs do you watch every snap? 60% completion means 4 out of 10 passes are missed. So probably 10 or so incompletions a game, minimum. Some of those are inevitably going to look like bad misses.

Come on man. Unless your brain is running purely on SPSS, Stata, or R, you know that stats are just an abstraction from a broader story. Beneath those timeless, spaceless, and static numbers is the timing, spacing, an processes through which they were produced (e.g., completion % tells us nothing of drops vs. bad throws). Anyone who watched the game saw missed opportunities, bad decisions, bad throws, and, most of all, a pattern of bad throws, missed opportunities, and bad decisions from the previous game and the previous season. So stop pretending like stats tell the story. They dont.

As opposed to every other QB's 30-40% incompletions, which are great decisions and on-the-money throws? Are you saying our receivers are amazing and drop far less than other teams? Are you saying we have a fantastic OL that limits the number of times Speight is hurried, hit, or pressured into a throwaway? Do we have a super-simple passing offense with minimal decision making and unusually frequent wide-open receivers? Because those things could explain decent stats despite poor QB play... but they aren't really true for this team.

No, stats don't tell the whole story, but I think you're being overly critical of Speight's "story" because he's the only one you watch in detail.

I read a comment in an earlier thread which I kind of agree with. At first we were thinking that Harbaugh put Speight in there because he's the best guy for the job. But now it's starting to look like stubbornness. If he were to pull Speight out it would be like admiting failure on his part. I no longer believe that Speight is the best guy on the team. From what we saw of O'Korn last week, which wasn't much I'll admit, I'd like to see more of JOK. It was just the one throw, but it was a beauty. Perfect timing and perfectly placed. I'm not sure we'll see that with Speight.
