OLine is abysmal. Speight is not good. WRs not getting separation, TEs dropping passes. Playcalling is definition of blah.
Offense is going to limit our ceiling again this year. Sucks
September 9th, 2017 at 4:24 PM ^
Pretty sure we'll here about how great the nose tackle was this game. Ulizio's inability to identify blocks and Kugler getting routinely run over were themes. Evans looked terrible. Isaac has wiggle on the outside but left a ton of yards on the field.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:31 PM ^
Isaac had 133 yars, 6.7 ypc. That's a nice stat line. What else do you want from the guy? Let's try being a little more realistic in our criticisms.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:31 PM ^
All of it on bounces on the outside. The issues with the line were in pass pro. Terrible on the right side.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:33 PM ^
Not to mention that 53 of the 133 came on 1 play late. Outside of that he is 80 yes on 19 carries for a pedestrian 4.2 yes per carry
September 9th, 2017 at 10:44 PM ^
Why will you take away his longest play? Just to fit your narrative?
September 9th, 2017 at 4:25 PM ^
We really need a blowout or two to get JO'K and Peters some PT.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:42 PM ^
lose though
September 9th, 2017 at 4:25 PM ^
DPJ is fast. McDoom is fast. Crawford is elusive. Black can create seperation. Our TEs can rumble and bumble
All we need is for Speight to fricking throw them the ball. Underthrow it if you have to. He needs to just give them a chance.
Its horrible how far he has regressed. I dont understand how a QB can develop such a horrible overthrowing habit like this.
Peters isnt ready. O'Korn is too conservative. Speight IS our QB but my God he is pissing me off
September 9th, 2017 at 4:30 PM ^
Where did you see Speight missing those athletes besides the ONE throw to DPJ?
How many open receivers did we have all day against a shit team that was stacking the box? A couple? And speight nailed the deep throw to Crawford.
That's on the scheme. Why not more screens to our freak athlete WRs and twitchy RBs? Why not more deep shots? Speight is hitting them. Why is our red zone offense so terrible? Why not use our giant TEs and explosive WRs for fade routes, ever? Why do we call the PA Rollout with Black as the only option as a one-yard route on 3rd and long?
September 9th, 2017 at 4:51 PM ^
You watched this game and saw Speight miss one throw? How much were you drinking?
September 9th, 2017 at 5:02 PM ^
He had a nearly 60% completion rating. Twelve incompletions. Some of those were throwaways. One was a completion to Perry that was ruled incorrectly. Can you think of a bunch of others where receiers were clearly open? Maybe the wheel route to Hill? But it wasn't a terrible throw. Otherwise, our receivers were blanketed. We need a better passing scheme.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:08 PM ^
Almost all of those completions were within 5 yards and half of those were thrown behind the receiver
September 9th, 2017 at 6:00 PM ^
I was looking for overthrows of open receivers in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTETBWgR5po They appear in the plays that begin at 8:16, 9:12 (debatable as to whether the receiver was open, but he had _no_ chance at making a catch because the throw was so high), 9:17 overthrew receiver who had some space toward the sideline in the endzone), 19:36 (overthrow that risked an interception), 27:16 (ending up out of bounds).
September 9th, 2017 at 7:05 PM ^
Ok, so in 29 attempts he had 5 bad throws?
And two of those were 3 yard routes where the receiver is blanketed. And the last one was an obvious throw away because he got pressure insantly?
Not sure that makes a very convincing case for as bad as a game as everyone here seems to think.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:56 PM ^
Overthrows, underthrows, out of bounds throws... Speight's thrown more ugly than nice.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:05 PM ^
Your first paragraph is accurate... sometimes. They aren't consistent at all yet.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:27 PM ^
If the O-line can't win the LOS against this defense...ouch!
September 9th, 2017 at 4:35 PM ^
The O-line was a problem today. Speight was a problem today. Speight was a big problem today. The O-line was a bigger problem than Speight today.
Will be easier to improve Speight than to improve the line. Both will be difficult to improve.

Attention Will Speight: Adderall is your friend.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:31 PM ^
It's sad that as a UM fan, I long for the days of Rudock, an Iowa grad transfer. Speight isn't the answer, and it worries me Harbaugh can't get Peters to an acceptable spot in year 2.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:31 PM ^
Speight can't pass well in the pocket under any sign of pressure. When any pressure comes he starts throwing inaccurately. Unfortunately, that has been often.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:33 PM ^
Also where is McDoom? This isn't the first time Drevno has literally not called his number at all.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:37 PM ^
What else is there to say that hasn't already been said? The offense was awful, the OL was completely atrocious, Speight still can't consistently hit his receivers. Three out of every four throws is high. Can't even give his receivers a CHANCE to make a play.
Props to Isaac as he was the lone bright spot. He had a great game considering what the OL gave him.
If nothing changes, the offense will cost this team any chance it would otherwise have in the PSU, Wisconsin, and OSU game. Even the Maryland, IU and MSU games all look like toss ups now.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:38 PM ^
Wilton. Speight. Sucks.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:39 PM ^
I think, in general, it turned out there was a massive overreaction to Cinci's last game to Austin Peay. They were still #73 overall on S&P and had the #39 ranked defense. They could be a decent team.
Still, very disappointing. The fact that Peters isn't close to Speight is very concerning. It looks like he might have been a miss. Hopefully, we hit on McCaffery and Milton. Speight is just playing like the middling 3 star recruit he was. Very, very limited. We've missed on a few OT's too the last 2 recruiting classes and that, along with the Newsome injury, has hurt as well.
WR's/TE's look talented but very young. As expected. You'd just hope the offense would look better in year 3.

Where is Ian Bunting?
September 9th, 2017 at 5:51 PM ^
Whats going on?
September 9th, 2017 at 4:40 PM ^
; or does he make him grad transfer so that the Peters/McCaffrey regime can begin!
not a religious man, but im praying this season is it for speight.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:44 PM ^
If he decides to come back but Peters is ready, I think Wilton is staring down a season full of clipboards and mature rhetoric. This is still a meritocracy and Peters is one of Jim's guys.

"This is still a meritocracy and Peters is one of Jim's guys."
You realize the inherent contradiction in this sentence, right? I agree that if Speight comes back, he likely loses the starting job. But it will have nothing to do with who is Jim's guy. And as Jim has himself said, they are all his guys.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:03 PM ^
I'll admit it felt hollow to throw that last bit in about Peters being one of Jim's guys. I intended for it to sound like a redundant argument more than a contradictory one. As if to say "it's likely that Speight will lose out due to it being a meritocracy...and btw Jim - Mr. QB guru - will finally get to have his hand picked guy out there."
Poor execution on my part.

Ok, got it (read this response second). Makes sense.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:05 PM ^
And I get the whole my guys - not my guys argument that came up as a result of Herman's comments last weekend. Am I not allowed to use the traditional meaning of the term? Yes they are al his guys. No he didn't go out and recruit the ones that were here before he was.

September 9th, 2017 at 5:16 PM ^
My point was that you can't say it's a meritocracy an then imply that Jim will give some preference the guys he recruited. That's not a meritocracy.
September 9th, 2017 at 4:41 PM ^
I was just concerned with how unprepared the team looked on offense. Isn't that kind of Harbaugh's thing? Buttoning up every last detail to be better than the guy across from you and better than the guy behind you. Also, I would identify as a Speight guy. I will show humility on that front all week.

It was extremely conservative. I believe the staff was looking ahead and trying hard not to tip their hand. At least I hope so.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:11 PM ^
Peppers...and other stuff. That's not the case. They don't trust Speight, to a degree, and it shows with the play calls
September 9th, 2017 at 4:53 PM ^
I long for the days of a QB that can tuck it and run when nothing is there. I'm shocked at the poor QB play in year 3 of Harbaugh. I have to wonder what is wrong with Peters. He should be serviceable at this point at least.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:09 PM ^
Uhhh... Speight had 60% completion,, >7 YPA, and no INTs. Peters would have to be quite a bit better than "serviceable" to justify benching him.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:23 PM ^
WS is kind of a tough one to figure out. His stats end up decent but he looks terrible on many throws via the eye test. I'm not saying bench him for a "serviceable" QB. I'm saying that I am surprised UM doesn't have an above average to elite QB playing right now. After a full year and 2 games of WS, I don't see it based on his performances against good teams. That is the issue I have with him having decent stats.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:55 PM ^
How many college QBs do you watch every snap? 60% completion means 4 out of 10 passes are missed. So probably 10 or so incompletions a game, minimum. Some of those are inevitably going to look like bad misses.
September 9th, 2017 at 7:02 PM ^
Come on man. Unless your brain is running purely on SPSS, Stata, or R, you know that stats are just an abstraction from a broader story. Beneath those timeless, spaceless, and static numbers is the timing, spacing, an processes through which they were produced (e.g., completion % tells us nothing of drops vs. bad throws). Anyone who watched the game saw missed opportunities, bad decisions, bad throws, and, most of all, a pattern of bad throws, missed opportunities, and bad decisions from the previous game and the previous season. So stop pretending like stats tell the story. They dont.
September 9th, 2017 at 10:47 PM ^
As opposed to every other QB's 30-40% incompletions, which are great decisions and on-the-money throws? Are you saying our receivers are amazing and drop far less than other teams? Are you saying we have a fantastic OL that limits the number of times Speight is hurried, hit, or pressured into a throwaway? Do we have a super-simple passing offense with minimal decision making and unusually frequent wide-open receivers? Because those things could explain decent stats despite poor QB play... but they aren't really true for this team.
No, stats don't tell the whole story, but I think you're being overly critical of Speight's "story" because he's the only one you watch in detail.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:03 PM ^
I read a comment in an earlier thread which I kind of agree with. At first we were thinking that Harbaugh put Speight in there because he's the best guy for the job. But now it's starting to look like stubbornness. If he were to pull Speight out it would be like admiting failure on his part. I no longer believe that Speight is the best guy on the team. From what we saw of O'Korn last week, which wasn't much I'll admit, I'd like to see more of JOK. It was just the one throw, but it was a beauty. Perfect timing and perfectly placed. I'm not sure we'll see that with Speight.
September 9th, 2017 at 5:32 PM ^
A number of times last week. Just not as consistent as we'd like.
September 9th, 2017 at 6:02 PM ^
If you still think O'Korn is a better option after watching him play, you haven't watched O'Korn play. He looks completely lost every time he's on the field.
September 10th, 2017 at 12:04 AM ^
How can you say that, though? He's taken 9 snaps this season. And he hasn't caused any catastrophic plays the way Speight has.
