Helmet Stickers

Submitted by Casa Grande on

What ever happened to all of the helmet stickers on the backs of the helmets for "rewards"?  Ohio State still has those asteriks that are supposed to be Buckeyes.  Michigan used to have little footballs and I believe they had a Wolverine stamped on it too.  Maybe I'm making that up in my mind, but I remember by the Ohio State game the starters would have tons of those footballs up the back and sides of the helmets.

I'm sure this was covered years ago when they stopped... but why did they stop?  Just to keep a clean look?

i think lloyd did not like them or something along those lines, but i know that most people find them ugly and hate them. i personally like the helmet stickers but am usually ridiculed by friends/other bloggers for bringing them up. i think there may be a way to turn them on in the NCAA football games. not sure tho??

Even my wife, who doesn't like football, thought the stickers were ugly and, after I explained what they were for, she said "Oh, they're at-a-boy stickers" and thought they were kind of stupid for a team sport.  First time she ever convinced me of something regarding sports.

So yeah, lets leave them to the likes of Ohio State.

The stickers themselves were kind of cool-looking (a football with a snarling wolverine inside) but when they were on the helmets, they made them look really cluttered. The helmets are definitely better without them.

Lloyd wanted to stress The Team over individual exploits when he started in '95. The Buckeyes have been out of control ever since Tressel took over. My roommate and I used to joke that they started getting buckeyes for going to class and showering. Watch any old UM-OSU game on Classic and barely any of the OSU players have stickers on both sides of the helmet, the most glaring example being Eddie George in the '95 game - the year he won the Heisman - only has half a helmet of them. Now, it seems every starter has a full helmet of buckeyes. "Pass golf, get a buckeye." "Successfully launder booster gifts, get a buckeye."

I think the Buckeyes look pretty cool on their helmets, but that's because they have a very sparse helmet design. With the wings, they just look too forced. Personally I think helmet stickers are solid and have never seen how they could really hurt "the team" - for some reason I don't see these guys getting into catfights over who has the most stickers on their helmet. The FSU stickers are my personal favorite.

Dex is right about the suitability of stickers depends upon the simplicity of the helmet. There isn't much going on with the bucknut domes. I also like the Georgia dog bone stickers. Does anyone know why some of the Georgia dog bones are a different color than the others? Is it for a team play versus individual play?

mjvancam - I believe that one is for football-related accomplishments, and the other for academic-related accomplishments.

These are a pathetic attempt by all college football teams to legitimize the idea that, in fact, their players are student athletes. Anyone who is not completely naive knows that the great majority of division one football players are not really college students. Once we dispense with that formality and just accept the fact that what we are watching is professional football, I think that makes it easier to stomach all of the crass commercialism in our beloved sport. It is that commercialism that kills any hope of post season tournament among other things. I doubly hate the stickers on the Michigan helmet, because it takes away from the beauty of the helmet that Fritz Crisler designed when he was winning national championships at Princeton in the early 1930s.

The Bucknut stickers look like a bunch of A-HOLES. Like if you've ever read Vonnegut, he would sometimes draw crud little buttholes in his books....yeah..The University of The Ohio State University of Ohio's stickers look like that. I suppose the biggest A-Hole on the team gets the most A-Holes.

Since Coach Hoke was mentored in the "traditions" of Michigan Football do you think there is a chance that he brings back the helmet stickers?
