Gators tab Emmitt Smith Honorary Captain for UM Game
The Florida Gators will turn to a person with some history in North Texas as their honorary captain for Saturday’s AdvoCare Classic in AT&T Stadium, the program announced Wednesday.
That will be Emmitt Smith, perhaps the greatest running back in NFL history.
Smith played for Florida in the late 1980s, racking up yardage as essentially the entire Gators offense through years in which the program was committing and then dealing with the effects of NCAA violations. He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft, then went on to do a couple of things while wearing the team’s famous star.

Our honorary captain is Michigan alum Tom Kartsotis, founder of Fossil watches, out of Plano, Texas.

in a few sideline shots during the game.

He's going to be annoyed he had to go there to see his alma mater lose to Michigan (again).

He's from my hometown and never seemed to like giving back.

We've had Tom Brady, Desmond Howard, and soon Charles Woodson. If Tom Harmon were still alive he'd be named honorary captain eventually as well. Nothing wrong with Florida taking pride in their history - a history which will soon include another loss to Michigan.

They should trot out Spurrier. That would be fun.
Proabaly afraid to do it given how bad it would make McElwain look by comparison.
Perhaps Zook then.

Zook's offenses were better.

Tebow?

Can he play QB?

Probably about as well as anyone currently on the Gators roster.

Barry was better.
August 30th, 2017 at 3:18 PM ^
Barry was way better than Emmitt. Emmitt Smith was playing on an entire team of Pro-Bowlers. Barry didn't have that luxury, to put it mildly.

The thing with Smith was that he never really wowed you. His greatness came from his remarkable consistency and longevity, but he was never a guy you really looked back on as one of the legends or mythical figures of the game.
Not in the way people look at Barry Sanders or Gale Sayers or Walter Payton. Smith was great, no contest, but he wasn't special or remarkable in the way these other greats were. When you saw Payton or Sayers or Sanders run, half the time, you'd just be shaking your head at how what they just did was even physically possible.

Barry was better, and with a worse line.
August 30th, 2017 at 3:41 PM ^
and with a far worse line
August 30th, 2017 at 4:05 PM ^
and thought, wait a second, Barry had a sh*t line to run behind, if he had had Dallas's line. But, didn't bother to change it.

Although I miss the innovation from his brief broadcasting career, most notably ignoring proper syntax and making up words.
Here's hoping he's giving the pre-game speech.

As Elway is and was better then Aikman.

Sounds like Florida will need a RB.

The Dancing With the Stars winner?
What does he have to do with football?
August 30th, 2017 at 3:34 PM ^
Perhaps you meant Barry Sanders was the greatest running back of all time.
August 30th, 2017 at 4:55 PM ^
Not with Emmitt in the conversation, but definitely Walter Payton, Jim Brown, and maybe Gale Sayers (if he had a longer career - he was unreal).
August 30th, 2017 at 3:41 PM ^
You must be realllllly deep in that Cowboys blue to think Emmitt Smith was even top 3.
August 30th, 2017 at 3:44 PM ^
Otherwise there's no reason to put that "perhaps the greatest" bullshit in there. Everyone knows who Smith is. And everyone not being a blind-ass Dallas homer knows he's not in the top 5 greatest.

Too bad he can't line up at RB for them...

argue Tomlinson was better.

My cool story bro: I met Emmitt Smith once and shook his hand. He had the most ridiculously powerful handshake of anyone I've ever met. He wasn't trying to be a jerk about it, but it was like gripping a block of stone.
August 30th, 2017 at 6:50 PM ^
They didn't invite him back to play RB? Need some bodies back there.
