Camp Updates from Gregg Henson - WRs, TEs and More
Greggggggg Henson has put out a couple of blog posts with some fall camp updates based on information he's getting from his sources. Short and sweet but there hasn't been too much news from camp recently.
The most recent one covers the WRs - he says McDoom and Crawford are having very good camps but aren't as dynamic as Freshmen DPJ and Tarik Black.
TE play is solid with 5-6 guys who can play
Watson is pushing at CB
He also had a post from earlier in the week covering the QB competition and explains why Peters is falling behind Speight and O'Korn.

Did Gregg actually have inside info on the Harbaugh hiring? Or was it just that all the bullshit he throws at the wall something finally stuck?
August 19th, 2017 at 12:18 AM ^
His inside info came from Art Regner. I wouldn't trust him much these days. He no longer resides in Michigan and has some awful takes on twitter (including bashing mgoblog). Basically a has-been from the old WDFN days.
August 19th, 2017 at 12:21 AM ^
Art Regner? That's a blast from the past of the old school Rob Parker WDFN days
August 19th, 2017 at 10:20 AM ^
His inside info comes from Sam Webb. I remember Henson asking Webb, on Twitter, if he too could take advantage of a sale so he could become a member (about a year or 2 ago).
August 18th, 2017 at 11:40 PM ^
He is a little inconsistent. On 8/15 he lists Caesar Ruiz as the starting center three days late it's Kugler. Let's hope he is right and the line is good.
August 18th, 2017 at 11:41 PM ^
Yeah I mean he said Crawford wasn't even included in the best group of WRs which I found hard to belibe
August 19th, 2017 at 12:35 AM ^
but that a walk-on was a "mile" ahead of him.
Somehow I don't buy that.
August 19th, 2017 at 2:16 AM ^
Of course we want the best possible line, but I'm rooting for Kugler to make it this year. Nothing at all against Ruiz. Just would love to see a 5th year senior make it and see the field as a starter. Sentimental. Still, it is in the hands of Harbaugh, Drevno, and to a lesser degree, Pep Hamilton., Choose wisely.
August 19th, 2017 at 2:54 AM ^
He was penciled in to be the next Molk at center. I hope this, his last, season he dominates at center and finally play like Molk.
August 19th, 2017 at 6:47 AM ^
5th year Sr. lineman that are good enough to start usually have really good years. Msu and Wisc have made a nice living over the last 10 years or so on these types of players. I also would like to see Kugler earn that job.
August 19th, 2017 at 9:25 AM ^
But I read that as him saying on 8/15 "here's the next great grouping of Michigan OL", not necessarily "here's the grouping that's likely to start week 1.
August 18th, 2017 at 11:40 PM ^
Yeah I think overshadowed is a bit of a strong word. I think Crawford is a really good bet to start and may be doing what he needs to do to keep that status, just basing that off of some other reports and the fact that he got the your-a-starter-pull from the spring game, but I'm def pumped to see Balck and DPJ.
On the OL, it seems as though Onwenu is widening he lead over Ruiz which is good to see of a second year player, Bushell-Beaty I'll be interested to see how ling his leash is against UF since they have a very talented a deep core of DEs.
August 18th, 2017 at 11:50 PM ^
He states Watson is pushing Hill and Long for a starting position. And three true freshman and a walk-on are the best WR's.
August 19th, 2017 at 5:53 PM ^
The true freshman probably are the best receivers. Talent is talent and I think people are going to like DPJ and Black at WR.
August 18th, 2017 at 11:53 PM ^
With several receivers who could each be gamebreakers makes me smile. And that makes Evans, Higdon, Isaac (and hopefully some Walker) even more dangerous. Throw in 1 or 2 solid TEs and the defense may not be the only group that's dominating. Two more weeks!!
GO BLUE!!
August 19th, 2017 at 12:08 AM ^
Wouldn't have expected that to be much of a battle after Nordin's impressive kick in the Spring Game. Huh.
August 19th, 2017 at 12:09 AM ^
The Peters comments are not news. Even Harbaugh has commented on this a couple of times.
August 19th, 2017 at 12:18 AM ^
I can't wait to see what the boards reaction would be in the 2018 QB battle if Speight has a similar or marginally better 2017 season. RS Senior Speight vs RS Sophmore Peters vs RS Freshman McCaffrey. I can't wait!
August 19th, 2017 at 12:47 AM ^
across all reports, seems to be the depth of the TE group, which is great to hear given the departure of Asiasi.
Seems like the McKeon hype may have been a thing. With him and Eubanks as RS Freshman, seems like not taking a TE last year was smart.
Random comment: I can't believe last year's class was only 5th nationally. The size and quality combo was super impressive. 27 (!!!) top 500 guys with 6 in the top 100? It's too bad Gary won't be around in 2019....
August 19th, 2017 at 1:02 AM ^
Or maybe the depth of the TE field speaks to its lack of standout talents, something also reflected in the (theoretically) expected move to more WRs on the field.
I don't give Henson much play on this.
Regarding the class, well, it was great, and the ones ahead of us (including you-know-who) were also loaded.
August 19th, 2017 at 8:31 AM ^
Good morning, Debbie!
August 19th, 2017 at 1:30 PM ^
I'm not arguing the rankings, so that wasn't a "I can't believe they didn't rank us higher" it was more a "I can't believe four teams had a better class than us".
Bama and OSU definitely had classes far and away better than ours. UGA and USC were very, very close.
We may not have an elite TE, but it does sounds like we have a lot of good ones. Are we seeing/hearing that we're playing more no TE sets? If that's the case, you may be correct.
But if we're still playing most or all sets with at least one TE, then the fact that we don't have an elite one has nothing to do with how often we put a second one on the field (assuming the 2nd, 3rd, 4th guys are all "good-ish".
My guess is that any change in deployment of TEs has more to do with Pep being the new passing coordinator or the fact that we have too many good WRs to keep them off the field (whereas last year we really only had two).
August 19th, 2017 at 4:39 AM ^
If you read enough of these reports, you'll basically hear positive about most of the players on the roster. I find nothing he's said to be earth shattering news. Sam Webb still provides the best information out there imo. Take what most others have to say with a grain of salt, especially Gregggggggg.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:13 AM ^
Exactly. Dude keeps his info vague enough to not be debunked but plausible enough to not be outright bullshit.
"Presumed returning starter from last year had a good fall camp and should contribute this year. Turns out the 4 and 5* WRs that have been getting heaping praises from every coach and player interview are actually good."
Ok.
August 19th, 2017 at 2:30 PM ^
He used the word "sick" and a guy like Gregg wouldn't use that word, so you know he's totally got a great inside source ;)
August 19th, 2017 at 7:18 AM ^
Why do I feel like this info is bogus? Ahhh yes cause Greggggg Hensen is an asshat. thats all.
August 19th, 2017 at 8:08 AM ^
A lot of good camp insight from sam and the gang. It's nice that subscribers that also post here on MGoBlog are respecting the paywall and not spilling all of the information here. Sam does a great job and deserves to be fairly compensated for he value he provides.
August 19th, 2017 at 8:53 AM ^
I chose 247 last week to break my paywall cherry. They drop a lot of tidbits there, but I do wonder what I'm missing from Scout. Anyone that has both, can you say if Sam is dropping any different info? Don't have to spill the beans on the info, just if it varies enough to warrant their membership.
August 19th, 2017 at 9:20 AM ^
In part because he has direct access to coaches and staff through his new podcast. Steve and Isaiah are great too, but as far as inside reports from camp go, Sam has more and clearer information.
August 19th, 2017 at 9:58 AM ^
Sam has had that access for a long time and didn't need the podcast for it. The podcast is for the listeners.
People underestimate just how important Sam is to the program. He is a mouthpiece of the coaches and an influential public advocate of the program. The trust he has built has allowed him to be very ingrained in to Michigan football.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:41 AM ^
True...Sam is legit, but it isn't like he has a crystal clear view of practice/camp. Remember, this is a guy who teamed up with Tom Beaver and had an "insider" named Maizeman that was thoroughly debunked on Scout.
August 19th, 2017 at 12:43 PM ^
I was referencing his most recent in the sub reports which came from his podcast interviews of Pep and Mattison. I do agree he is far more connected than many of us realize.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:32 AM ^
Does Sam's info differ that much from Gregg's?
August 19th, 2017 at 10:33 AM ^
I liked it better when the information spilled over to the MgoBoard.
August 19th, 2017 at 8:21 AM ^
My grandmother, who lives in a garage in North Dakota and has no access to the outside world, has better sources than Greg.
August 19th, 2017 at 8:36 AM ^
Dude, help Gammy out. Get her a decent studio apartment or something.
August 19th, 2017 at 8:43 AM ^
Greqq Henson strikes me as the type who would rip a bunch of stuff from premium boards and then make up a few random tidbits so that it sounds like he has a unique source.

ding ding
August 19th, 2017 at 2:48 PM ^
This pretty much sums it up for me. I'm sure he's reading this post right now & writing another crybaby post about this site.

She's a viper.

I find that if you open the garage door to your garage, it actually does give you access to the outside world.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
August 19th, 2017 at 8:30 AM ^
Henson has sucked ass for 20 years. I see no reason to believe things have changed.
August 19th, 2017 at 9:55 AM ^
He was alright on 96.1 but don't mind too much that he got canned as having 3 people doing a show was a bit much and too much goofing around . Surprised Big Drew hasn't been shitcanned yet tho.
August 19th, 2017 at 8:33 AM ^
This is one of the most useless posts I've seen in the past couple of weeks, and that's saying much.
