Camp Updates from Gregg Henson - WRs, TEs and More
Greggggggg Henson has put out a couple of blog posts with some fall camp updates based on information he's getting from his sources. Short and sweet but there hasn't been too much news from camp recently.
The most recent one covers the WRs - he says McDoom and Crawford are having very good camps but aren't as dynamic as Freshmen DPJ and Tarik Black.
TE play is solid with 5-6 guys who can play
Watson is pushing at CB
He also had a post from earlier in the week covering the QB competition and explains why Peters is falling behind Speight and O'Korn.

His inside info came from Art Regner. I wouldn't trust him much these days. He no longer resides in Michigan and has some awful takes on twitter (including bashing mgoblog). Basically a has-been from the old WDFN days.

His inside info comes from Sam Webb. I remember Henson asking Webb, on Twitter, if he too could take advantage of a sale so he could become a member (about a year or 2 ago).

but that a walk-on was a "mile" ahead of him.
Somehow I don't buy that.

Of course we want the best possible line, but I'm rooting for Kugler to make it this year. Nothing at all against Ruiz. Just would love to see a 5th year senior make it and see the field as a starter. Sentimental. Still, it is in the hands of Harbaugh, Drevno, and to a lesser degree, Pep Hamilton., Choose wisely.

He was penciled in to be the next Molk at center. I hope this, his last, season he dominates at center and finally play like Molk.

5th year Sr. lineman that are good enough to start usually have really good years. Msu and Wisc have made a nice living over the last 10 years or so on these types of players. I also would like to see Kugler earn that job.

The true freshman probably are the best receivers. Talent is talent and I think people are going to like DPJ and Black at WR.

With several receivers who could each be gamebreakers makes me smile. And that makes Evans, Higdon, Isaac (and hopefully some Walker) even more dangerous. Throw in 1 or 2 solid TEs and the defense may not be the only group that's dominating. Two more weeks!!
GO BLUE!!

Wouldn't have expected that to be much of a battle after Nordin's impressive kick in the Spring Game. Huh.

The Peters comments are not news. Even Harbaugh has commented on this a couple of times.

I can't wait to see what the boards reaction would be in the 2018 QB battle if Speight has a similar or marginally better 2017 season. RS Senior Speight vs RS Sophmore Peters vs RS Freshman McCaffrey. I can't wait!

across all reports, seems to be the depth of the TE group, which is great to hear given the departure of Asiasi.
Seems like the McKeon hype may have been a thing. With him and Eubanks as RS Freshman, seems like not taking a TE last year was smart.
Random comment: I can't believe last year's class was only 5th nationally. The size and quality combo was super impressive. 27 (!!!) top 500 guys with 6 in the top 100? It's too bad Gary won't be around in 2019....

Or maybe the depth of the TE field speaks to its lack of standout talents, something also reflected in the (theoretically) expected move to more WRs on the field.
I don't give Henson much play on this.
Regarding the class, well, it was great, and the ones ahead of us (including you-know-who) were also loaded.

Good morning, Debbie!

I'm not arguing the rankings, so that wasn't a "I can't believe they didn't rank us higher" it was more a "I can't believe four teams had a better class than us".
Bama and OSU definitely had classes far and away better than ours. UGA and USC were very, very close.
We may not have an elite TE, but it does sounds like we have a lot of good ones. Are we seeing/hearing that we're playing more no TE sets? If that's the case, you may be correct.
But if we're still playing most or all sets with at least one TE, then the fact that we don't have an elite one has nothing to do with how often we put a second one on the field (assuming the 2nd, 3rd, 4th guys are all "good-ish".
My guess is that any change in deployment of TEs has more to do with Pep being the new passing coordinator or the fact that we have too many good WRs to keep them off the field (whereas last year we really only had two).

If you read enough of these reports, you'll basically hear positive about most of the players on the roster. I find nothing he's said to be earth shattering news. Sam Webb still provides the best information out there imo. Take what most others have to say with a grain of salt, especially Gregggggggg.

He used the word "sick" and a guy like Gregg wouldn't use that word, so you know he's totally got a great inside source ;)

I chose 247 last week to break my paywall cherry. They drop a lot of tidbits there, but I do wonder what I'm missing from Scout. Anyone that has both, can you say if Sam is dropping any different info? Don't have to spill the beans on the info, just if it varies enough to warrant their membership.

Sam has had that access for a long time and didn't need the podcast for it. The podcast is for the listeners.
People underestimate just how important Sam is to the program. He is a mouthpiece of the coaches and an influential public advocate of the program. The trust he has built has allowed him to be very ingrained in to Michigan football.

True...Sam is legit, but it isn't like he has a crystal clear view of practice/camp. Remember, this is a guy who teamed up with Tom Beaver and had an "insider" named Maizeman that was thoroughly debunked on Scout.
