OT: Slingbox for rent

Submitted by MGoArchive on

Hi there,

I have a Slingbox for rent for $40/USD a month for someone who would like to stream the games/doesn't have cable. Payment would be month to month, starting September 1st. You have the option to extend this through basketball season, if you'd like. Honestly, this deal probably has the most value for someone who lives overseas. For people who live in the US, YouTuBe TV, Hulu Live, PS VUE, and Direct TV Now are all viable options.

The proceeds of this endeavor go towards my the electricity/hard drive costs of maintaing a 3TB Michigan Athletics arhive, and the .torrents I post of victories every week.

Anyways, the Slingbox is connected to a TV which you would control - there is a button that switches the channel. You would have access to all the channels listed here - http://www.wowway.com/support/tv/channel-lineups

In the 'Large Cable' package. There's quite a few channels listed there. You'd also be able to make your own recordings - the cablebox is a 2TB TiVo. The Slingbox can be accessed via the iOS/Android Slingbox applications, or through a web browser via http://webslingplayer.com/.

Shoot me an e-mail if your interested mgovault at gmail dot com.

Thanks,

As a new ex pat I attempted to set up a VPN and one of the many streaming options and they all are too smart for my VPN. In the end the only thing that worked for me was a Slingbox. If you don't have a family member or friend you can set up your own slingbox with this might be your best option. But paying a friend $5 a month to rent an extra cable box and buying the M1 for $75 (plus an hdmi converter for high def) will be your more economical option.

You can't stream all the channels live due to licensing issues but you can stream anything off the DVR. Streaming live can be a bit choppy at times but the DVR service works very well.  I use Hotspot VPN.

The screen is somewhat truncated vertically  when watching HD programs on iOS devices. The Comcast iOS app doesn't allow HDMI to lightning adaptor connectivity, however, so no connecting to a TV (I tried it from Japan).

I'm very happy with the service which is free with Comcast once you have an X1 box. I spend about half the time in Japan and my wife is over there most of the time these days and loves UM football.

just did a little research on Sling and seeing a lot of nasty reviews saying you now have to sit through an add before getting to the content. also the viewing area is obstructed by banner ads. is this true?

Only if you watch on the iPhone app. I haven't had any problems using my iPad to stream to my Roku stick. And even on the iPhone app I've only seen ads like right when I open the app, only sometimes, and never disturbed my viewing. But I haven't spent much time watching that way.

Edit: I just fired up my iPad app and got ads for the first time. But it wasn't connecting to my Roku, and everything needed to be turned off and on again. Once I did that, it connected again without problem and back to no ads.

acts as an interface which talks to the box and receives the video/audio feed directly. No ads.

I recommend using the service with a laptop hooked up to a TV for the best quality. Althought the iOS/Android apps work fine when using Airplay/mirroring.
