gotta be embarrassing for MSU and Maryland that their coaches are the only ones giving them a vote, which makes it obvious that they voted for themselves... that's like Chris Crieghton voting for EMU... just sad.

I don't know if he still has a vote but Steve Spurrier used to vote for Duke, where he had formerly coached. Whomever was the head coach of Duke at the time was probably unfairly deemed a douche by generic fans for voting for his own (pathetic) team.

It says random draw from a pool of coaches who said they were "willing to participate."
Which means:
- Harbaugh is willing but didn't get his name drawn; or
- He isn't willing to participate.
I'd think it would be a competitive advantage to participate, since there is (albeit small) amount of impact that the poll has on the final rankings. It's only one metric, but it is used I believe.
OTOH, I could see Harbaugh saying "no thanks" to participating for the exact reasons critics don't like the poll--there's no way these coaches can actually watch all the games & give educated opinions on this stuff week in & week out. I could easily see Harbaugh adopt the attitude of--if he can't do it 100% solid/all the way, he doesn't want to do it at all.

I don't see Nebraska as any threat this year or the near future. Always a solid team and can put up a fight any Saturday, but think they come in more in the 7-5 range.
Disco stopped being great in the 70's . Come to think of it, I don't think it was ever great.
Le Freak was not great, but it was, um, useful. That song got me some, on multiple occasions.

I will say, there are some better occupational names out there, no offense to anyone named "Tanner", of course.

Actually, imagine naming your kid Frobisher. That would be unique in most schools, I would think.

Will be interesting to see how Riley fits there long-term. Those fans have a very specific way they like their team to play on offense and coaches have been fighting off that faction since Solich was fired.

I dislike those fuckers as much as anybody here but it justs odd to me that EVERYBODY thinks they're going to be pretty good except us. Every poll I've seen has them ranked above us, every preview publication thinks they'll finish ahead of us in the B1G East and the experts at Athlon were all in agreement in predicting we'd lose there this year.
Not saying they're all right and we're all wrong but the fact that "everyone" seems to think they'll be pretty good this year ought to at least give us pause and consider they just might be.
Crazy talk I know when we all think they suck but just for arguement's sake we might want to consider that everyone else might not be wrong.

seems to have made an impression on people, but I'm with you. They were a completely different team at the end of the season compared to the one we destroyed. And Michigan was playing pretty good football last season.
Penn State reminds me of Wisconsin in the late 90's. They won a B1G title and they won a Rose Bowl (Wisky....not PSU).....but they never beat Michigan and Ron Dayne (or Barkley in this case) never rushed for 100 against Michigan.
Not every team to lose a game badly is a bad team. It's basically as simple as that.
If you're forming your opinion based on one game then you just have a shitty opinion. Wisconsin had good teams in the late 90s. Ron Dayne was a good running back. Penn State had a good team last year. Saquon Barkley is a good running back.

OK, 39-10.
That was their first Rose Bowl trip and win in forever. They also beat us in 1994. During those Ron Dayne years, we had some pretty good teams and were probably favored more times than not.
What's going on this year with PSU is ridiculous hype that Wisconsin wishes they had.
They were certainly better at the end of last season than when we played them, but i'm not sure it accounts for the difference between a #6 rating and what we saw in the 49-10 game. First of all, much of the perception of Penn State as a top 10 team comes from winning the Big Ten and a loss in a "great" game vs. USC (exciting game, yes, great game? I don't know...). If they lose the Ohio State game, as they should have, or Barrett get's marked down an inch short of the line to make, as he should have, then Penn State doesn't get either opportunity.
Second, their run at the end was greatly padded by an easier schedule. Their last five regular season games were against Purdue, Iowa, Indiana, Rutgers, and a dead inside MSU. They were tied at the half or trailed against Purdue, Indiana, and MSU. They only truly looked impressive against Iowa.
I don't think they were as bad as we thought after about week 5 (an escape at home against Minnesota), but I don't think they were as good as people thought after the Rose Bowl, either. The first half of the season doesn't just completely disappear. I think they're a top 15ish team headed into the season. Capable of beating anybody on their schedule. I will also be very surprised if they repeat as division champions.
1. Bears repeating b/c many have forgotten: Penn State would have lost to OSU last year but for some really terrible officiating.
2. OTOH, Penn State again has a very weak OOC schedule (like always since forever), so they probably will be undefeated when M rolls into town.
3. After seeing how USC let Penn State back in the game at the Rose Bowl, hopefully M will spend TONS of time coaching the DBs how to defend against jump ball scenarios. Man I have so many terrible flashbacks of M DBs not turning around and/or just missing the PBU on pooorly thrown jump ball passes during the RR and Hoke eras.
