OT: Jordan Spieth wins The Open.

Submitted by NFG on
The dude has ice in his veins. Incredible finish considering how his round started. All that's missing now is the PGA championship for the grand slam.

The last 5 holes. He still had some issues tee to green but his putting more then compensated for it. He had a horrible tee shot on 17 and even 18 wasn't that great of a tee shot. He went to an iron and still missed the fairway. I don't think there's any question he's the best putter on tour right now. He had 7 putts in the last 6 holes and other than 14 and the tap in at 18, they were from a decent distance.

Guy is good. But it's hilarious to watch the announcers and golf channel pump this guy. They're desperate for anyone to take Tiger's place since golf interest has been in the shitter for the last 7 years.

Believe their first choice would be Rickie Fowler, but he can never win anything.  Spieth is a whiner and goes through bad stretches of golf at times. Same with Rory.

Do you watch golf on a regular basis? A whiner is not how I'd describe him at all. He's one of the most emotionally stable and mature golfers I've watched, and he's only 23. Remember, you're watching golf, there are always going to be comparisons to Tiger.

It may have been 13 where he was in his back swing and someone in the crowd did something distracting. He checked his swing and laughed about the timing of the noise. I've seen numerous golfers lose their shit over that kind of stuff. I thougt it showed tremedous control to stop his swing, and then great tolerance to laugh it off.

I watch way too much golf. Every time this guy is mic'd up he gets caught berating Geller or complaining about things that are his own fault. Case in point: 1st hole today, "this is crap! Great shots not getting rewarded." Bro, great shots don't land in 3 foot deep crap; maybe you took the wrong line. You could argue that's a good mental strategy on the course, but yeah it makes him a whiner.

What Spieth and Tiger have in common is that they both have management teams that branded them at a young age to conform to what golf's corporate powers think they want out of young superstars (oh he's so kind and generous!). At least Rickie tries to be himself.

Rickie is the best. Maybe not playing-wise (although he is an excellent golfer), but personality-wise for sure. Obviously I am all about Adam Scott and Jason Day, but Rickie is a guy I always root for.

I never understood why people that watch golf are as fixated on players' personality, the way you describe. It's why Tiger banging prostitutes never meant anything to me. I want to see great players do great things on the golf course. What they do or say in between those great things they do on the golf course is fodder for magazines and I couldn't care less.

"Every time this guy is mic'd up"- which is, every. damn. time. He hit what he thought was a good shot, bitched about the result for about 6 seconds, and moved on to win yet another major. He's 23 years old, at the pinnacle of his sport, and constantly has all eyes (and ears) on him. He's handled the spotlight like a true champion, and "whiners" are attempting to pick apart his every move. He's going to go down as one of the best to ever play the game, and it's ok to just enjoy watching his greatness.

What Jordan has in common with Tiger is WINNING!!!

And I don't mean in the context the current temporary resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. uses the term.

I mean ONLY player besides Nicklaus to win 3 legs of career slam before 24th Bday;

Joining Tiger, Jack and maybe Hogan to win as many tournaments overall in this many starts;

As in he's over 20 MORE shots under par in Majors since 2015 than the next lowest player.

Yes, he's audibly hard on himself (but c'mon, "crap" compared to some of the F bombs Tiger used to unleash?!)

But to suggest he's berating Greller when he hits bad shots is total BS, and I'm pretty sure you know that! Whatever grudge you have against Speith is really totally misplaced. Honestly, it says A LOT more about you than it does about Jordan!

Speith blew the Masters last year...but he's only 23 and has already won the three most prestigious trophies in the sport (Masters, US Open, Open Championship).  WTF more do you want?

The PGA is to the other majors as the Land Grant Trophy is to The Game.

Back when I used to actually watch golf, I never missed the Masters, the Open or the U.S. Open but rarely watched the PGA.

Just curious.  The guy is only 23 years old.  He's a baby age-wise on the tour, and look what he's accomplished.  OF COURSE he's going to be inconsistent for periods.  But for his age, he's incredibly good even if you can't see it.  And calling him a whiner?  Seriously?  How many interviews of him have you seen?  Every single one I've seen, he's been nothing but class and shown great maturity.

Yes, I play golf, and competitively at the amateur level. And yes, Spieth is absurdly good. No one is denying that. I was just defeinding the original "whiner" comment, and all I'm saying is that I personally don't appreciate this bizarre American tendency to equate athletic success with being a good person. Why do we insist on dumping all these extra-athletic qualities into the guy just because he wins?

As an example, Spieth clearly knows how to grind on the course (as do all PGA Tour Pros), and his decision not to re-tee out of frustration on 13 was remarkable. But it doesn't tell you anything about his "maturity" off the course, and it doesn't tell you whether he has "class". Maturity should be measured using way more than any of us know about the kid.

Either way, count me as skeptical of any athlete who gets portrayed as a holy saint, particularly when there's plenty of evidence that he's an otherwise normal 23 year old. I just wish he'd embrace it like his peers - Rickie, JT, Smylie, etc. It would make the sport more entertaining if its superstars didn't feel the need to pander to the desires of corporate sponsors.

Was pulling for Kooch too, but you can't deny that Spieth has that "It" factor. He just willed his way on those last five holes. Nearly aced 14, then 50 foot eagle on 15. When he lined up that putt on 16 I knew he was going to make it. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the PGA next month.

It seemed like after Tiger fell from grace and hit his massive decline, everyone wanted to anoint Rory as the face of golf (Even gave him the video game cover.). Looks like Jordan barged through the front door and snatched the crown.

It's too bad that I don't care for Under Armor's designs, because they've locked up a lot of athletes that I respect and enjoy watching the most... Brady, Curry, Spieth, Phelps, The Rock, Kershaw, Newton. I'm not a huge Cam fan like the rest, but his style of play is unique and he's fun to watch.

Kuch their last 5 holes.  Great play, resolve, and sportsmanship.  Will admit I recorded it and sped watched.  Made the slow play a non issue.  Michigan football one of the few things I still like watching live, along with the Masters.

Far as I can tell the only way to beat him when he's leading on Sunday is to put a body of water between him and the hole somewhere on the back nine. Good for Kocur today, showed his balls of steel as well.

But doesn't make it a fun sport to watch. I think the game would achieve a greater level of popularity If they allowed the pros to yell and curse at each while driving or putting.
