Bball Recruiting - New 18 Target/Nate Hinton

Submitted by Matt EM on

My first time seeing Nate play this weekend at the Adidas Gauntle Finale in S Carolina......man was I impressed. Not currently in the EM 150 for 2018, but that will certainly change come early August when we update our rankings.

He's absolutely blowing up right now. Would love for Michigan to get this kid in the mix.

Quick first step, good change of direction, nice high release on a smooth looking jumper. Just needs a little more strength and he could be special. Get this guy an offer already. He and Hunter could round this class out nicely!

Matt - with Currie reclassifying to this 2018, that means we have only 1 spot left though I believe Beilein is recruiting for 2 spots assuming either Wagner or Matthews heads to the NBA after the season. In your opinion who do we end up with for those 2 spots?

I'd say Hunter Tyson and 1 of Ignas/Jerome Hunter. Things can obviously change quick if Archie or Hinton visit and get offered. But as of right now the offerees are more likely for obvious reasons. I'd gladly take any one of Jerome Hunter/Ignas/Archie/Hinton and a developmental project such as Hunter Tyson.

Johns and David DeJulius are most likely rotational players in year 1, even if on a limited basis based on having college ready frames and skillsets that fit our system. If we can get one more instant impact type guy, it bodes very well for the future.

I wasn't originally all that enamored with Hunter Tyson, but the more I see of him, the more I see a kid that Beilein usually gets a lot of value out of.

Hopefully UM can tap into that CIA Bounce connection. There is a lot of talent in that program.

My wish list in order:

Jerome Hunter

Ignas/Archie/Hinton

Noah Locke

Hunter Tyson

Jerome is a guy that I think can be a difference maker based on his skillset and versatility. Has the tools to play the 2, 3 and 4. The rest of the guys above are a notch below in my opinion.

Projection in order of certainty as of today:

Hunter Tyson

Ignas/Hunter

Locke

Archie/Hinton

in relation to last year. His motor is much improved, as he' rebounding the ball at a higher rate than last year by a wide margin. Good athlete with strong frame and some explosiveness. Good shooter with nice form that will stretch the floor. Shows flashes of having a nice handle/change of direction but rarely utlizes it in game settings.

His motor/aggression and ballhandling will determine whether he's an average/above average player at UM or an all B10 type with pro potential down the line.

Really like the pickup, as he has a college ready frame now that can compete at the high major level with a good stroke that will fit in day one in Coach Beilein's offense. Looks to be a really nice complimentary piece with potential to average 14pts and 6-7 rebounds at some point down the line.

Michigan hands out an extremely limited number of official offers every year. So I think labeling Hinton as a target is justified since the staff has obviously reached out and made contact. To limit the 'target' category to those that have been offered is a bit misleading in my opinion.........especially since we refuse to offer any prospect until they visit. For instance, 5* Simi Shittu is most certainly a target, but does not hold an offer.

I've read a ton of Magnus' work......and if I'm even being mentioned in the same breath as him from an analytical standpoint, that's quite the compliment indeed.

I'm what I would label a semi-educated obsessive fan from a footbal standpoint, and Magnus has educated me on numerous occasions from the eyes of a football talent evaluator.

He is from an area that I coach so we go to a bunch of the same events. Dude is tough as hell and his skill set has caught up to his motor and athleticism. Glad to see him finally blowing up. Definitely a big ten type of player. I'd love him at Michigan.

Matt, Have you made contact with Nate? It looks like Michigan is still tracking him pretty hard the past couple of days. It makes me nervous that we only have 3 scholarship offers out right now and would love to get Hinton officially in the mix
