Exit Corey Malone-Hatcher
Yesterday's recruiting profile was unfortunately prescient, as Corey Malone-Hatcher announced on twitter that he will take a medical hardship and retire from football due to a chronic Achilles injury:

Malone-Hatcher enrolled early and went through spring practice; as a freshman he obviously had no opportunity to see playing time. Michigan will go forward with Luiji Vilain, Kwity Paye, Deron Irving-Bey, and Donovan Jeter as freshman WDE/SDE, though the latter two might end up moving inside.
Wish him the best of luck for his future.
Achillies injuries are painful as hell and really tough to rehab from. At least the young man is going to get a free education. Tough break, and probably means UM will take another DE this class.
They aren't all painful. Just depends on how you tear it and whether or not the muscle pulls back up your leg. I torn mine a few years ago and it was almost completely painless. Just felt like I got kicked in the back of the ankle.
Now rehab on the other hand...that's a bitch. I was stuck in bed for 4 weeks and couldn't even put my leg down for longer than 5-10min for about 6 weeks without it hurting. Wound up having knee issues later too due to my gait changing.
1/10 -- would not recommend.
Rupture and tear are two different things.
Bummer. all the best to CMH, who seems like a true competitor.
Best of luck.
He seems like a mature young man that could help the staff as a student asst. possibly?
Aways sucks to hear about things like this. Still good that football opened some doors for him in terms of educational opportunities, and it sounds like he's poised to take full advantage of that. Best of luck to him.
Was this a complete surprise? I don't subscribe to any recruiting services. Was this one of those hush-hush, expected attrition scenarios?
It's not quite "show me your MRI before I send you a NLI", but his recruiter had to have known some one thing was keeping him from playing. Still, hope for the best, plan for the worst.
I sprained my Achilles my sophomore year of Highschool and missed 4 weeks, 2 games, and could barely run, I can't imagine how shitty it feels to completely tear it and considering how he played through alot of this his Senior year that's really admirable. Corey's done alot of good repping the Maize & Blue especially on the Recruiting trail, I fully expect him to be Sam Popper 2.0!
This is why you more than maximize your scholarship allotment.
for Drake Johnson, but don't know if that's going to happen.
Glad he made the right decision for himself, and happy he'll be able to continue on at UM academically.
Best of luck in your studies CMH.
Perhaps a career in coaching/recruiting?
That has got to be a tough blow. Glad he is still on scholarship and wish him the best.
Best of luck to him.
The real mission of the university is to provide an excellent education. I trust he will take full advantage of this opportunity and be a man we can all be proud of. This is the way we all pay it forward. Football is only a few years; education is for ever.
in school Corey. Go Blue.
Good luck CMH.
The dude was/is all Blue. When it came to standing up for Michigan, he was a leader. Thank you CMH.
Find someone who looks at you like Corey Malone-Hatcher's mom looks at Coach Harbaugh.
Best of luck to Corey, wish him all the best!
It would be amazing if they suit him up for one game. Even if it is just to run out of the tunnel, and touch the banner.
Best of luck in all your future endeavors.
Even though his Plan A didn't work out, his Plan B is world class. A full ride to UM will give him a world of opportunities, wish him the best.
Although his written response to this disappointment suggests that he might have been prepared for this news, it still has to be devastating for him.
I would hope that he's able to remain with the Michigan football program in some capacity in order to not only maintain friendships with other players, especially those from his recruting class, and members of the coaching staff, but also to have access to Michigan's trainers and physical therapists who can monitor and help with his ongoing rehabilitation. It's probably important that his friends and the coaches help keep his spirits up.
Having lived with chronic achilles tendonitis for 50 years (resulting from a badly sprained ankle and complications from repetitive stress), although it often seems like a minor annoyance, there are times when the pain can be unbearable.
The pain can come on suddenly. Fortunately for him, the streets of Ann Arbor are mostly flat and have relatively gentle inclines. Walking on steep inclines like the streets of San Francisco can make achilles tendonitis worse, especially going from east to west for over eight blocks and back down again on Lombard Street, as I learned to my regret about seven years ago. The injury can cause changes in your gait and that leads to other problems.
The "RICE" treatment of rest-ice-compression-elevation helps, but the relief often seems temporary. I hope that he'll be okay and that he'll achieve success in school and whatever path he chooses for his career.
Godspeed young man.
For him, he got a taste of being a Michigan football player going through spring practice but will never get to play in a game. Hopefully he'll get to be part of the program in some way.
What's the rules on his participation with the team? Is he allowed to become a student assistant? Seems like he has great leadership qualities. Bonded so well with the team already.
First recruiting wrap up I read. Needless to say it will be the last. Yes I'm superstitious.
This is surely an incredible disappointment in this young man's life. I can feel the pain as he apologies to Coach Harbaugh even though he doesn't need to. I wish him the best in growing from this experience and achieving his other goals. Go Blue!
