OT: Brad Ausmus and the Tigers

Submitted by NFG on

Since his debut in 2014, I think this will be the 27th thread created regarding his tenure as the manager of the Tigers on this site. After going 90-72 in his first year and losing in the ALDS to the Orioles, the Tigers have gone a collective 196-206 (including their current record), with zero playoff appearences. After today's beat down by Cleveland, I would like to believe that soon they'll fire him before or during the All-Star break.

It isn't always the managers fault, some say it's also Avila, but something needs to be done. This team at one point was built for World Championships, and now they are scrapping the bottom of the barrel. What a disappointment.

Thoughts?

Avila is a much bigger issue imo...his signings have been awful (pelfry, lowe, zimm, upton) and im very skeptical of his ability to pull off traded a la dombrowski. dark times ahead.

His biggest sin was his pathetic attempt at a fire sale last summer. By announcing one was underway, teams immediately underbid...however instead of taking the deals, he changed directions and failed to take advantage of JVs and Kinslers high value.

The fire sale was going to be this spring, but they stopped at moving Maybin. The Tigers were expected to do some buying last summer at the trade deadline.

Given the values around the trade deadline, pulling back this spring and waiting until then for better offers seems like the right move.

I know that Ausmus is not shopping for the groceries, but he apparently can't cook worth shit. He simply doesn't have the resume to get the kind of rope that he has, the players don't respond to him nor does he appear to inspire their will at all, and everyday he is still in that dugout the players have an excuse to mail it in like they are doing. And his lame "this is just the kind of game we play" attitude and outlook is like an imitation of a manager with withdom which he does not have and hasn't earned. Ausmus is clearly not the only problem, but it is truly staggering that he is still the manager of that team.

What's the point if firing him? To send a message? Gene Lemont isn't about to turn this into a playoff team. Last year of contract, Ausmus is not coming back.

Chris Illitch needs to focus on bigger picture. No young talent, horrible farm, aging contracts. Need to find the right person to lead us forward. It's def not company-man al avila.

That's why they went through that half baked fire sale last offseason.  If they continue down this dumpster fire of a season, there will be a fire sale to shred payroll for the next owner.  Avila won't be GM next season or in 2019 because there will be a new owner by then.

Yeah, I agree here. People want a scapegoat to be upset about, and perhaps Ausmus isn't a great manager, but what's the point? A new manager isn't somehow going to make VMart young again, or turn the bullpen into an asset, or magically allow Nick Castellanos to reach the potential everyone thinks he has. The team isn't good. With or without Ausmus. So why bother firing him now when he's basically just keeping the boiler running through the end of the season? Unless he is actively harming future assets or alienating key talent with mismanagement, just let him manage out the string. Nothing is gained by firing him mid season other than symbolism, and for a team that needs to be completely broken down and rebuilt, that symbolism is a useless gesture to the fanbase. Let him go down with the ship.

Chris Illitch has alot to think about regarding both his GMs. Ken Holland has outlived his usefulness and should have been gone when Yzerman was ready to step into the GM role. Avila is lost.

You went from Dombrowski and Smokey to Avila and Ausmus.

Two of these things are not quite like the other.

They also had big Mike's open wallet, not sure if that exists anymore so that probably had something to do with it.

To keep Ausmus. My wife thinks he's cute and he works cheap.

The team reflects his personality. Boring, unemotional, and ambivilant.

The only positive about this miserable season is knowing we don't

have to put up with his sorry ass any more.

Ausmus has been disappointing and the Tigers could use an upgrade. But our results the previous three years has not been because of him. It was only a matter of time before the team's age, poor contracts, and bad farm system caught up to them. Not many managers could have saved this team.

I agree, and I hate to blame Dombrowski, because I love him, but he made some decisions solely to win a championship. I can't blame him because they were so close and Illitch wanted it so bad. He made a couple great moves before he left but it wasn't enough. They've drafted horribly and made some bad signings. I hope they don't become the Phillies

Wasn't this all because Mr. I wanted a title before he died? They mortgaged the future to secure the talent they needed to make a run. Except for the closer position, they pretty much got it right--baseball randomness simply undid them in the best seasons. Big contracts, huge trades, even the absurd Cabrera extension. All for the moments where great players were in their prime together. This decline was completely predictable, even expected and planned. It was the cost of attacking the window. I'm disappointed they couldn't pull out a title, but presented with the same scenario again, I'd support going all out the same way.

Yep, it is what it is. They went after it and unfortunately it never ended up finishing their way. They always ran into a hot team at the wrong time. I'm grateful for their efforts and just hope Avila is the right guy to rebuild this thing. I hope they can move some assets for some talent that's close to major league ready. I'm just worried there won't be enough buyers and our assets won't be playing well enough to bring in the haul we need.

I have never seen such a collection of talented players who routinely get punked and have no problem at all with it. Ausmus is merely a reflection of this pervasive attitude. They should fire him and replace him with Ozzy Guillen. The entire organization deserves this.

But on the bottom of the list with Tigers' issues.

Contracts, aging veterans, a system designed to win in the 1990s. Ausmus sucks, but he can only do so much with what he is given.

before Ausmus and Avila. Most of this is Dombrowski's work who left them with fat contracts, an emptied farm system and no bullpen. I suppose you can blame Avila for not pressing the issue when he took over the job but beyond that it's hard to hold him accountable for the low returns they are getting from Verlander, Cabrera and Martinez.

Dombrowski's made a living being a pretty good GM if you want to go all in and win in the present, and that is all he is good for. He did his job and built teams that won four AL Central divisions and two AL pennants. But going all in to win now comes with a cost and that cost is these next five years, if we are lucky.

The Tigers have the 3rd worst winning percentage in the AL! At some point you have to blame the manager. Sure, Avila can be held responsible too, but I don't get how some people keep claiming that Ausmus isn't a problem. If he's managing the Red Sox, what is their record? Time to move in another direction.

Hopefully they can move a few pieces and speed up the rebuild process. Tiger fans are going to have to watch a few years of bad baseball before it gets better, so they might as well get a jump on it now.

He is not a good manager. But he's not the biggest reason we are 196-206 since that playoff appearance. His firing will make next to no difference in the W-L column over the course of the rest of the season.

bacon1431

July 2nd, 2017 at 5:39 PM ^

Unless he is making a negative difference in the development of young players, there's little to no reason to fire him in the middle of a season in which we will miss the playoffs no matter what. People are acting like him getting fired right now is gonna save the season. It won't. We are a bad baseball team. Casey Stengel or Billy Martin or Sparky Anderson could walk into that dugout and we'd still be an awful team. If I'm the Tigers, I spend the rest of the season looking for ways to offload big contracts for prospects either at the deadline or sending out feelers for what people would want come winter meetings. I'd also do my homework to find a manager that will develop young players for a rebuild the next couple years. Don't need to fire Brad Ausmus and waste money on a buyout to do that.

bacon1431

July 2nd, 2017 at 5:42 PM ^

Why waste the money on a buyout to fire him midsession? We can let him go for free in the fall. Only reason to fire him now is if you think he is negatively affecting development of young players or you have a managing prospect in house that you would like to give an audition to the rest of the season.
