Brandon Johns trending towards Michigan BB commitment

Submitted by HarbaughsLeftElbow on

A lot of 247 crystal ball/twitter activity suggesting Johns could commit to Michigan fairly soon. Just watched his highlights and he looks like a pretty ideal 4 for JB's system.

You know it's funny because there was some random writer on twitter today saying Michigan was about to pull out a huge in-state commitment.

The tweet was before most of the CBs came in.

This would be an ultimate LOL. To go into that place and take him away from Stumpy.

edit: found it

umbig11 confirmed it in the thread about Billy Donlon leaving. He said Johns informed the staff that he plans to announce his commitment to Michigan soon. Really would be a huge pickup. A bit surprising too, with Johns growing up about 5 minutes away from the Breslin Center.

and interior scoring have not stopped being things, though, regardless of what you call the positions. Not sure how you succeed when you go two years without signing a single C/PF type. Beilein is barely even looking seriously at that type of player, and it's not clear why.

With no replacement, leaving us with two true bigs on the roster for '18-'19, neither of whom looks like an impact player. Even if he decides to sign a big in the 2019 class, it will still probably be 2-3 years before they can contribute significantly. Do we really want to rely on Teske and Davis as our only inside players for the next 3 years, and have to cross our fingers that neither ever gets hurt?

We were a distant 4th with Bamba..the chances of him ever coming here were near zero. He was not a serious option for us.

When they recruit and anticipate future needs.  What a concept.  And yeah...someone paying attention CAN know quite a bit about what the roster is going to look like in two years.  As far as Davis and Teske, show me where they were "written off".  You can't.  I said they weren't that athletic, which is a fact that two years won't change.

How many big men do you want Beilein to recruit? He recruited 2 last year, one this year, and Johns will probably drop tomorrow, plus we are still actively recruiting others for next year's class. If Wagner doesn't go pro after next year, which is a possibility, we would have 5 guys for 2 spots. Even if Wagner does go pro, we will have two guys for the 5 and two for the 4.

And asking if we really want Davis and Teske as our only bigs sure sounds like you don't think either of them will be able to play the 5.

While I haven't spoken directly to Brandon/his camp, based on what I'm hearing it appears that he's on board. Brandon is ranked #44 in our initial rankings that are releasing in a few moments.

Good 4 man for Beilien, a legit 6'8, nice stroke from distance, very good athlete. Will likely have an instant impact as 3/4 off the bench that goes for 6-8 points and perhaps 3 rebs as a freshman. Really good class with Dave and Johns (hopefully), add one of Hunter/Iggy and it becomes a top 10 class for sure.

You don't seem as high on Johns as a guy like Bingham. Think he's got work to do in terms of his motor? I know you like high motor, high athleticism guys, and I assume that's b/c those traits are tougher to improve upon than something like shooting. Am I right?

I remember looking at a guy like Trevon Bluiett and not being all that enamored. Didn't seem like a plus athlete, and didn't seem like a fantastic defender or high energy guy. Now he's on the verge of being an All-American this season. Don't know if Brandon Johns has as diverse of an offensive game as Bluiett did (who could shoot from anywhere), but seems like they're similar. Can't remember how Bluiett was on the glass.

as reflected in our initial top 150 for 18.

Brandon has a much improved motor, and is a plus rebounder this year on the EYBL circuit.

Bingham has more upside, and perhaps pro potential, but Brandon is more of a sure thing at this point. I think Brandon will come in (assuming he's on  board) and give us quality minutes at the 4 spot as a freshman. If his motor is right and his game develops, he has all B10 potential in my opinion considering his athletic gifts and skillset.

This would be a big get. Top 50 seems to be the general ceiling of Beilein's classes of late, so if we can land one in that range it is big because they have very high multiple year contributor possibilities.

Impossible. I heard Beilein can't recruit.

If we get him, I fully expect Maizen to either tell us he's overrated, bitch about him not being a 5 star, or completely stay out of the "Hello" post. If we don't get him, I expect it to be the end of the world for Maizen as it is proof Beilein can't recruit.

But honestly, this could turn out to have 3 kids in the top 100. Johns fits perfectly in Beilein's scheme

On how you look at recruiting.

If you look at recruiting from a standpoint of stars and how all the recruiting sites view kids, then he is correct. Beilein typically does not find guys that services view highly, and the rankings bear that out. He basically lands somewhere between 15-30 every year.

If you view recruiting from a standpoint of finding guys that are decent on sites and he's able to find something in them to elevate their game, then he's very good.

I completely admire how he builds these kids up to be better than the sites saw them. On the other hand, I really do wish he could land some of those ready-made 5 stars that come in and dominate. If you look up and down the rosters of teams that win the whole thing, rarely do you see the Beilein-formula holding true. Those teams are typically lined with 4-5 star kids.

Why would anyone look at recruiting from a star standpoint and not "getting guys drafted" standpoint. Star ratings are generally useless after a guy's freshman year. When it comes to actual talent, Beilein has recruited better than anyone in the B10 the last 5 years

You'll have to ask the hundreds of recruiting services that have been doing this stuff for decades, not Uncle Leo.

But there are two big time deliniations. That I can be sure of. Just because I have eyes and can read.
