Sounds like Rashan is becoming quite the leader for our team..and might be a stretch but it also sounds like he hints the defense may be better this year because its their second year in the system.

Coach Brown is more than confident in what he has to work with and how he sees this defense performing.That is one happy football coach. People can speculate all they want but in my opinion the University Of Michigan football program has the best coaching staff in all of college football. Anyone who loves Michigan football should be very excited about this coming football season. Go Blue.

This guy had been making top-tier defenses out of New England ghosts for decades and now he's at a program that can find & recruit the sort of athletes he'd never been able to work with. I was actually a little apprehensive about the transition -- would his system be a little too tailored for chewing gum and duct tape? -- but last year's starters went from good to terrifying in less than a year.
We have not yet seen the full power of an armed & operational Don Brown Michigan defense. 2018 is going to be verrrry interesting.

Is that Harbaugh basically Googled him. It's one of those stupidly simple things that require a touch of humility such that narcissists wearing ten-gallon hats just won't think of. If you're going to literally look up the #1 collegiate defense to find out who's the guy running it, you need to first confront the fact that there was no chance you or your guy was it.
And the number of coaches who didn't think of this is staggering. Practically all of them? The hands-down best defensive coordinator in the country was basically gathering dust on a shelf in New England. To get him is a "most Harbaugh thing ever" somwhere in a long list of most Harbaugh things ever. Didn't he also hire Frey because he remembered that Indiana whipped our D-line?
While we're return only 1 starter from the dominant 2016 defense, many of the back-ups played a significant number of snaps (especially in big games). The 2017 defense is not nearly as inexperienced as many think.
– On the defensive line, Rashan Gary, Bryan Mone, Maurice Hurst, and Chase Winovich all have considerable experience.
– Mike McCray is the lone returning starter. Everyone expects him to build upon his strong redshirt junior season.
– And in the secondary, S Tyree Kinnel and CB Brandon Watson played reasonably well in limited snaps as back-ups. Kinnel is good bet to be one of the starting safeties.
Hence, 6 of the 11 starting positions are accounted for.
That leaves questions about the following positions:
- Viper (Hudson)
- the 3rd linebacker (Devin Bush)
- starting cornerbacks (David Long and Lavert Hill with Keith Washington in the mix)
- other safety position (Josh Metellus)
A lot of new names in the back 7 but together they can form a formidable group. The "inexperienced but extremely talented players" will have to climb the learning curve. I'm optimistic about fall camp.
I'm also excited about the 2 deep becasue our team will finally have schematic continuity. I look forward to players like Michael Dwumfour, Carlo Kemp, Elysee Mbem-Bosse, Reuben Jones, and Noah Furbush showcasing their abilities.
I'm not as worried as most about experience; last year's defense basically started from scratch as well. They had problems against UCF and Colorado mainly due to learning curve.
The anticipated drop-off boils down to D-line depth, and there's just no way to upgrade. Last season we had an unsustainable embarrassment of riches. The 2nd string line was probably one of the best 20 in the country. The first string was a bona fide NFL line, as in they literally all got drafted save Godin who basically swapped places with a future day 1 pick because after Glasgow, Taco and Wormley, do you really need Hurst in there as well?
This year we're going to be starting Mone (can he stay healthy?) and Winovich (can he be more than Just a Speed Rusher?). I mean, it'll be fine. Certainly good enough to be a top-20 defense with Hoke, Mattison or Durkin running the show. But we might wind up playing true freshmen on the 2nd string. Really talented ones, but they'll be raw, so for every highlight reel TFL they're going to also bust a play for easy yards.
Talent like that doesn't just stop working, but they just haven't seen everything. Or rather, anything. They're going to see things they haven't seen before, and like anyone in that situation, they're going to either hesitate or misplay it.

I also believe that, by the end of the year, this defense is going to be awesome, and it will be preferred over last year's, which was fantastic.
I expect some bumps and bruises through the first half of the season simply due to lack of experience, but they'll be pretty damn good by the end of the season and setting up for a dominant 2018 campaign. Especially if the depth behind Hurst and Mone show a lot of promise.
I don't think the point was height so much as girth. The average American definitely is heftier than the average Dane. And football is definitely not a game for 'slight' individuals.
Coach Brown's defense has always improved in year 2. Hard to see this defense finishing number 1, but, if they remain in the top 5, that would be a hell of a season for a unit that lost so much talent to the NFL.
If the defense remains top 5 and the offense can improve a little (41st in S&P+ last year, get to 35th? 30th? this year), that would be sufficient to put us in playoff contention.
Listen, the offense will be a monster this year, barring subpar qb play. There is a secret weapon coming!
