[LOCKED] Harbaugh invites Obama honorary team captain

No politics is a good rule to keep in mind here.

From a football perspective - Obama is likely very popular amongst most of the kids we recruit and building some ties to a President re-inforces what we are as an accademic institution.

From recruiting, I view this is a big score.

MOD EDIT - This one is starting to go in all sorts of directions that it shouldn't. It was a nice bit of news, not political in the least really by itself, but alas....the search for nice things begins again. - LSA

I guess you missed it was already posted at the very top of the posts for over a half an hour before you made the topic.

You're right that people would shit their pants if Trump came, which is a shitty double standard. I'm a huge conservative and not a fan of Obama policies but I think having any US President at our stadium is awesome. Hope it works out. Security would, of course, be a nightmare.

Did you ever stop to think that politics might not have as much to do with it as you think. There's really not a "shitty double standard" at all. I'd be fine with W being an honorary captain. In fact, I think it would be cool if W and Obama were captains TOGETHER.

People wouldn't shit their pants because he's a republican, they would shit their pants because he's extremely unpopular right now. Imagine if the old Bush came..people wouldn't go crazy.

Approval-rating wise he's no worse than the past average for Presidents. And I know polls are polls, but I believe he may have hit 50% (!) this past week. His detractors are just more out-spoken, and the political climate in 2017 is divisively hostile.

First of all, he hit 50% in a Rasmussen poll, which has a C+ rating on FiveThirtyEight for accuracy (not the worst, but not the best either).

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/pollster-ratings/

Gallup has him at 37% through last week (B- rating on 538)

In his first 100 days, he had 53% disapproval vs. 42% approval. The only president to have his disapproval outweigh his approval rating dating back to Truman (ABC has an A+ on 538).

Second, 2017 is so "divisively hostile"? Ever heard of the Civil War? Or the Burr-Hamilton duel? Or Representative Brooks who beat Senator Sumner on the floor of the Senate?

It's fine to believe whatever you want, but it's better to have your beliefs be backed up by facts.

you are correct that things have heated up compared to recent history, Pew found that:

More than half of Democrats (55%) say the Republican Party makes them “afraid,” while 49% of Republicans say the same about the Democratic Party. Among those highly engaged in politics – those who say they vote regularly and either volunteer for or donate to campaigns – fully 70% of Democrats and 62% of Republicans say they are afraid of the other party.

There's actually an interesting book about why Americans seem to be so divided. But rather than Blue vs. Red, he says America is more like 11 different countries based on the beliefs of people who settled in various regions:

http://www.npr.org/2013/11/11/244527860/forget-the-50-states-u-s-is-rea…

I think a lot of people are annoyed because it seems facts don't matter to a lot of people nowadays, and all of us can be guilty of ascribing stereotypes to people based on a simple statement. What almost everyone on this board can agree on is we love Michigan. Go Blue.

There was ONE POLL(Rasmussen, which is known to be right leaning) that said his approval rating was at 50%. The next closest poll says that his approval rating is at 42%. And the average of all the polls is at 39.5%. Do a little bit of research before posting something from an obviously biased source.

Here is my source in case you want to check it out: http://www.newsweek.com/president-donald-trump-approval-rating-626967

I would be cool if he got an invite. The difference being, Bush and Obama conduct themselves in a dignified manner. Politics aside, Trump does not.

I think it has more to do with the fact that there is a huge difference between "President" and "Former President". W would have been controversial during his administration, Obama would have been controversial during his. They're not doing much public policy that affects people these days, so why not?

Resident snowflake Boliver46 is obviously triggered.

You can invite Bush too and it would be fine. The difference is neither Bush nor Obama are asshats.

Oh and Harbaugh also invited Trump last year. Your czar declined.

I think you've got the wrong side of the aisle for that moniker, cupcake. Regardless of whether Trump was invited in the past wasn't the point - which you clearly missed in your attempt to be tolerantly intolerant...pretty typical. Specifically talking about how the board would handle if Trump were invited instead. Please spend time focusing on reading comprehension for next time. #NoSnowflakeLeftBehind

My own little pet peeve, but I prefer it when Presidents (current and former) are addressed as "President," even "Former President," or at the very least "Mr."

Politics aside, if this was to happen it would be great!
