Unbeaten boxer Floyd Mayweather will fight UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in a much-discussed boxing match on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas, a well-placed source told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday. Mayweather is expected to make the announcement on social media as early as Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not available, but it will either be at the MGM Grand Garden or T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Nevada Athletic Commission on Wednesday approved the request from Mayweather Promotions to put on a boxing card on Aug. 26 at the MGM Grand. The venue could change, however, to T-Mobile.

I'm not sure Floyd has it in him to pound the shit out of anyone.  He's an extremely skilled boxer.  There's no arguing that.

My overwhelming sensation is that he out-boxes McGregor.

However, I keep thinking - it's easier to pick up boxing, especially for someone who already incorporates some (just some) boxing techniques into their fighting styles anyway.  For that reason, and because I like McGregor, I keep telling myself that he's got a chance.

I'm intrigued, man.  After it's all said and done, I won't be surprised if I'm reallly disappointed.   I just won't miss it, though.  No way, no how.

I can't wait.

Bingo.  The GGG vs Canelo fight is the most amazing matchup in maybe a decade or more.  This is one that all non-boxing fans that are bored with the sport need to watch.  FANTASTIC matchup.

Floyd vs. McGregor?  Sleeper.  Floyd will use superior skill and speed, stay away, and box the shit out of this dude.  This will once and for all show how superior boxers are than brawlers/wrestlers at ... boxing ... go figure.  Its going to be a sleeper, and everyone will be pissed they threw their money away.  SKIP IT.

Watch GGG vs. Canelo - THAT is a big time, awesome action packed fight waiting to happen!  Both have  High skill level - Power - Chins.

no way I am going to skip GGG v. Alverez for this clown show.  People are going to spend $100 for it and its just going to be a novelty act.  Mayweather would not have agreed to do this if he was going to lose, and McGregor is not going to care if he loses becaue it is not "his sport."

People should really skip this non-sense and order the Alverez fight in September.  That is going to be an epic fight, and I heard they are trying to put together a very good undercard to encourage buys.  De La Hoya understands that the sport is dying and he is going to try to get people back with that fight after far too many Mayweather productions  Floyd Mayweather is an all time great but the second half of his career put boxing into vegetative state.

A lot of people have the misconception that because some striking is incorporated in MMA that it's easier to pick boxing up. There's so much more involved in boxing than the striking. Floyd has brittle hands and that's the reason he chooses to out-point his opponents rather than knock them out. He does have KO power though. Footwork, knowing how to cut the ring off, knowing how and when to pop the jab, knowing how to effectively counter, knowing how to set up a 2, 3 or 4 punch combo off the jab, knowing how to lead your opponent to where you want him to go in the ring, all of these are techniques employed by elite boxers. Some of these techniques are employed by good MMA fighters too but the fact that MMA fighters can shoot, grapple, kick, knee and elbow means their focus shifts from one technique to the next where al an elite boxer is polishing the same techniques over the span of an entire career.

Conor, to me, has only a puncher's chance in this fight and that's on the rare occassion he catches Floyd with a big enough shot to do what's never been done...put him down. Floyd has been hit with some big shots in his career but he's weathered them all with little to no problem. He's older now and not as quick/elusive as he used to be but against a novice boxer, he's the flash. He's going to toy with and embarrass Conor. He could knock Conor out at any point of the fight he feels like it but I think he's going to put on a 12 round clinic to make a statement. Fight won't even be close and a lot of people are going to waste a whole lot of money paying to see Floyd lose.

Mayweather 120-108 (or less). As the greatest defensive boxer of all time, he won't  knock McGregor out, but will simply outbox him, and maybe pick up a knockdown.

That said, what a terrible boring fight this is going to be. I advise everyone on this board to invest in Canelo-GGG instead, which will at least have some value. Buying this thing is the equivalent of pissing $100 down the drain.

It won't be nearly as boring as Mayweather Pacquiao.  I still want my $100 bucks back, or whatever the hell I paid for that fight.

I'm not a huge fight fan, but I won't miss this fight.  I told my family - when McGregor announced he'd signed - that I wasn't going to miss it.  My daughters are into it too.  Lol.  They kind of enjoy MMA and boxing, so long as it's not too bloody.  They're mostly into it just for the spectacle, though.

Toally agree with your assessment, otherwise.   Diaz / McGregor 2 was so  much better than this fight will be.  Hell, even the first Diaz / McGregor was much better than this fight could be.

Exaclty.  Why not pay 2 bar room bouncers 10 bucks to stand in a phone booth and punch the shit out of each other.

Boxing is superior.

BUT....non-skilled phone booth guys are pretty fun to watch  :)

T

here is a reason that globally, the 2 highest paid athletes couple years back were boxers. (may and pac).  would be curious to see who the highest paid in 2016 were.

The best thing about Mayweather-Pacquiao was the Spurs/Clippers Game 7 that preceded it. He starts out trying to win on points, which does not make for very entertaining fights.

I honestly still fully believe this will fall through. Dana White and the UFC have nothing to gain by allowing this fight. Their biggest bell cow getting his ass kicked in another sport is terrible for the organization. He'll never be as big of a draw after, if he even wants to fight again after that payday.

They can't come out and outright say they won't allow Conor to do this fight as it will then piss off their most profitable fighter. So they are slow playing the hell of it. Just watch for there to be lots of little issues until it falls apart.

They are doing it now because Floyd's people offered up enough revenue to make it worthwhile. It isn't bad for the UFC because Conor looks bad.. it hurts them because he would be 100% fighting on the July card and his name alone on it would sell probably double of what it will now do. It hurts the UFC because Conor is going to demand huge money or take a hiatus after his huge payday. Im not saying this is good or bad they're simply reasons Dana White and co would have preferred this to never happen.

You're wrong and massively so and I mean that in the most respectful way possible. This does not hurt McGregor at all. He has a built in excuse. Will it be that shocking if arguably the greatest boxer of all time beats a guy making his debut? Also conor is going to make so much money from this fight that he will only fight once maybe two more times in the ufc and call it quits. Personally I think he loses this fight returns to the ufc to fight nate Diaz for the third time and retire. He has always said he wants to get in make huge money and get out.

I think you read mine wrong because you just completely agreed with what I was saying. This being great for Conor isn't great for the UFC. If Dana White and the company weren't his current promoter this fight would have been signed awhile ago. The UFC would prefer to milk every PPV they could out of Conor's star. Now they likely get one maybe two more that Conor can cherry pick and wait out until his wage demands are met.

Whether the mayweather fight were to happen or not conor has a short shelf life in mma. He's not gonna be a guy who's around for a decade. If the mayweather doesn't happen conor fights maybe 3 or 4 more time instead Of the 1 or 2 he might do after mayweather. Now a conor ppv is very valuable for the ufc but is it as valuable as what they'll make in co promotion for this fight. I think no.
