Has hiring life long NBA coaches ever worked out for college basketball? Avery Johnson has been so and so at Alabama, Eddie Jordan was a complete disaster at Rutgers.

I watched damn near every game Mike Brown coached here with the Cavs and would give you the following scouting report:

Positives

Likeble, friendly individual

Excellent at setting pre-game strategy & gameplans

Good to great defensive coach

Negatives

Rigid to a fault at executing his "plan".  Would seldom, if ever, deviate from what he decided would work before game started

Poor "in-game" coach.  Had difficult time making adjustments

The next offensive set he creates will be his first.  Ran everything through the defense and pretty much expected the offensive to take care of itself

Not sure how he'd translate to college but my guess is he'd be a pretty strong recruiter given his resume and personality.  He'd be a hell-of-a-lot stronger than McDermott that's for sure.

Lue's not a problem this series.  Our problem is Tristin has completely disapeared and our shooters forgot how to shoot.  I was there last night and if Korver makes the three HE WAS SPECIFICALLY BROUGHT IN TO SHOOT we win the game and the whole series narrative changes.  But he, Deron Williams and the entire Cavs team not named Lebron & Kyrie suck right now and there's nothing Lue can do about it.

Basically it looks to me like the moments too big for the Cavs role players.

Since we're already hearing scuttelbutt from NBA folks about Love being traded if the series ends quickly, I just think it's worth pointing out that Tristan Thompson held out to become a max player and has been essentially invisible.

Last night, JR Smith was the only only Cavs player to score in the last 4 and a half minutes of the game while Durant and Curry ended the game on an 11-0 run. You can say the Cavs wouldn't have been in that position without James and Irving, but they choked away the game when it mattered most. And I didn't even mention the absolute failure Kevin Love was. The big 3 of the Warriors are just better than the big 3 of the Cavs

Can you imagine firing the best coach in program history and deciding that the best possible option is a coach that the Cavs fired TWICE???

Bamba would get out of his commitment because his coach left. He never considered OSU, so he would come to Michigan and take the open scholarship.
Works for me.

Almost anyone who is paid to think about these things says this. He has lost to Belein twice in the tourney, once against a future National runner up team, and both times was at a huge disadvantage when it comes to program prestige and financial capability. He also has been known to turn 3 star recruits into NBA players, which portends to future success in recruiting as well as developing the talent he gets. On top of that, in only 1-2 years at Texas, has shown to be an elite recruiter. There is very little doubt about Shaka being a good college basketball coach. Although, his coaching style seems to be weak against Belein's style so I would love for them to keep running into each other(In the tourney, not at OSU). Shaka would do insanely well at a school like OSU, but I don't imagine thta OSU is a better job than Texas, especially considering the foundation he has built at Texas.

I think this means that we would never have to worry about OSU beating anyone unless they had Curry/Durant/Thompson/Green.

Oh, and someone else to do the coaching most of the time.

that this does not seem to be viewed as a really elite, in-demand position.  Matta certainly put them on the map, but the recent and consistent drop-off appears to have moved them back off the map, or at least to the edge.

OSU isn't a blue blood so not sure how many people view it as 'elite', but I've always felt it was a pretty job - some where in the second tier after the blue bloods. In the past coaches have definitely worked their way up the ranks before they got the OSU job (Williams, Matta, O'Brien).

Just trying stuff out there but I'm not sure Smith is that highly regarded as an AD.  In addition, while OSU is pretty good program a coach would have to wonder what exactly the expectations are for the job.  While Matta has fallen on a few rough years his overall resume at OSU is pretty darn good and he just got fired - 2 FFs (one of them a title game appearance), 3 Elite Eights, 5 Sweet 16s, 4 BT Tourney championships and 5 regular season BT titles.

It baffles me somewhat that OSU BB hasn't been more historically successful given all the advantages it has in football. But then again the regional competition in BB is far stronger than in football - standout programs like IU, UK, Xavier, MSU, Pitt, Cincy/UM in years past all there to take share of ohio talent.

OSU can look at Mike Brown all they want.

I want to go look at Keri Russell. That doesn't mean that she's going to want anything to do with me.

Thad Matta fucked them with this timing.

They should consider the 1 year interim tag. It's not like they're going to be good. No Steve Fisher situation.

Just punt on this coming year.

...that's who.

(...and I'm told that it was more mutual than people are saying...basically Matta was on the hot seat, he got to keep his job because of recruits he was supposedly going to land. He didn't land them and Gene Smith came knocking and made it very uncomfortable for Matta, but at the same time Matta knew he failed when he went all in on these recruits so he didn't put up much of a fight. He gambled all of his job security on a top recruiting class that he never got, so while yes, it wasn't a true resignation - it also wasn't a surprise to Matta and his submitted without much of a fight is what I understand. He knew he fucked it up and walked away "thankful" (wrong word) for the opportunity to make things right with a top recruiting class.)

I've heard the same thing about the disappointment with this recruiting class.  That still doesn't mean the timing is Matta's fault though.  I guess it's his fault that he didn't land the recruits but it's OSU's fault for basing his job status on that.

Why would he? He's in the perfect situation right now...

I don't think he has the ego to think OSU is going to work out for him better than being Kerr's assistant with arguably the best team EVER when compared to its era/rules/etc. (and sadly considering Kerr's health).

But I could be wrong, everyone has an ego...it would just be supremely dumb move.

As I said, punt on this year...hire the interim HC, you know the team isn't any good...so close your eyes and wait until March when you can fire the interim and go get someone you really want and when they'd want to come.

The problem now is, even if you could get an elite coach, he's not going to come now. Next year is a failed year. So that's one year off your contract, that's one year of blemish, one year of headache. So if it was going to take you 3 years to rebuild it...now you only have 2. Because in 3 years no on is going to remember that your first year was a throw away year.

It's just not a smart career move unless you're a young assistant coach who just needs HC experience.
