I've got Soundgarden, Temple Of the dog, his solo album Euphoria Morning, and Audioslave in my collection, and I would have listened to anything he recorded. Troubled guy when it came to relationships and substance abuse. I will miss him.

The handle was a late 90s message board nickname for UM, used by some MSU fans.  When they used lower case ("ee") that really twisted the knife.  I was driven to tears, like Trojan fans are when someone calls their school U$C.

But yes, I did enjoy RATM, the 90s grunge stuff, and the acts that Cornell were a part of were my favorites.

Whenever I listen to classic vinyl, the bridge, lithium etc it always brings back memories of the great ones who left us way to young and where I was when I heard the sad news. Its not a easy life for sure, RIP Keep Rocking

A big part of the soundtrack of my teenage years in the 90's. Badmotorfinger is one of the greatest albums in rock history if you ask me.

Additional sad note is that Temple of the Dog had been talking about a new album.

when a friend of mine got a weird little smile on her face as we were both singing/mubling along. I asked her was so funny, and she said, "Oh nothing. Chris Cornell's voice is just so sexy." I just laughed and said, "No kidding."

What a sad day. RIP, Mr. Cornell.

I was shocked when I saw this when I woke up.  Immediately turned on Audioslave and his song from Casino Royale, which is still by far my favorite Bond theme song ever. RIP.

because I am 29. Their first album dropped when I was in eighth grade and was one of those albums everyone at my high school, regardless of musical taste, was playing when I was a Freshman. *

Having said that, I was raised on the good 90s music by my cousin, who gave me a master class in that, so I was expecting Audioslave to be great.

*The other two I remember was Outkast's Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below and, weirdly, Deja Entendu by Brand New.

Just caught this on Channel 7 news as it was on in someone's cubicle. I was a Soundgarden fan back in the day, but hadn't listened to any in a long time quite frankly despite having their stuff in my collection. I guess I will be pulling that out for a listen tonight. Very tragic news indeed.

Bad Motorfinger hooked me on Chris Cornell.  Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog...whatever so long as Cornell was singing.

I'm gonna break...

I'm gonna break my...

I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Saw on a posted setlist that during the encore they performed the refrain for the folk song / Zepplin song In My Time of Dying.  Anyone see this?

During one the quiet parts in "Slaves & Bulldozers" they kep the music essentially the same, but Cornell spoke/sang the refrain to the Zep song. Took me a few seconds to notice it, as it wasn't the same melody (and to be honest, I don't know all the lyrics), but I liked it. It was cool & different.

I believe they had done this "breakdown" at earlier shows, and Soundgarden obviously liked Zeppelin, so I'm not going to read too much into it.

After all, this was a guy who wrote "Black Hole Sun", "Like Suicide", "Pretty Noose", "Day I Tried to LIve", etc --- he was saying dark stuff for over 30 years.

I've seen Chris Cornell at least fifteen times, with Soundgarden, Audioslave and solo. I think that's my personal record with any one performer.

I could say a lot, as his music means a lot to me, but since I just saw a live show, I'll comment on that: one of the thing I appreciated about him was his incomparable voice didn't always go where he wanted it to go. His songs (particularly early/mid Soundgarden) had range levels that were crazy, and if things weren't right, he didn't make it every time. While it made for a less than great performance, I always appreciated he wasn't faking it; he was putting all of himself out there. And when he *did* hit those notes (which was the large majority of the time), you appreciated it even more. His solo shows were particular vocal marvels.

Last night's show was, to be honest, very good, but not great. The band seemed a bit off -- perhaps they were rusty, but I have no idea if it was something else. I will say he seemed unusually effusive in his praise of the Detroit audience -- while Detroit has good crowds and they have always supported him, he still seemed over the top. I have no idea if that means he was on something, and it wasn't like he was stumbling around and going on and on, but it was noticeable to me.

Anyway, I'm off to go pay for a gofundme to put Eddie Vedder under 24-hour protection. If something happens to him, the singers of my youth will have largely have been wiped out.

Chris Cornell/Temple/PJ, those were exactly like guys I knew, guys sitting next to me in college. Some were in bands, others working with me in the kitchen at Gandy Dancer or Gratzi. They took Zeppelin, Sabbath and The Who and updated that music in ways we'll never see again.

Fuck this and this day. Sorry. Be nice to each other today. You never know.

Beyond the great song "Seasons" and Soundgarden's Birth Ritual (included on the original), the deluxe version has some short Chris Cornell tracks, like an acoustic, early version of Spoonman and I believe a live track or two.

I was really looking forward to listening to it tomorrow...now, I think I'm going to have to wait awhile.

I'd travel to downtown Seattle take in grunge scene consisting of soundgarden, narvina, alice in chains and others. Ironic he comes to Detroit and passes. Dude could not only sing but one helluva entertainer...

This news floored me this morning. I loved his work with Audioslave and he was also the first American-born musician to compose/sing a James Bond theme song for Casino Royale. His latest composition was the theme song to The Promise (which was in and out of theaters fairly quickly a month ago).

I think his best work was actually his acoustic cover of Billy Jean. if you have not heard it before, YouTube it. you will be in for a treat.

Sounds like they found him with a band around his neck.  So Sad.  You can read into it however you choose and I'm not going to speculate, but from the setlist & some lyrics that were worked into the performance, and the fact that it was in Detroit which he repeatedly praised as "rock city", there's a lot of chatter that this may have been pre-meditated.
