Welcome to Detroit, sorry I missed you
Well it looks like i missed an interesting night last night. Overheard some people in the WLA say that I was the topic of a nice little post. Apparently I have made such an impression on people that there is a need around here to call me out personally for answering questions and giving my insights. I do not want to start another thread of attack, but I do want to answer some questions.
1. I liked Shafer at Michigan because i run a lot of Shafers schemes. I liked the idea of being able to follow the WOlverines over the next several years, knowing the terminology being used, the direction and the focus of the Defense, and such. I was supprised when he got the job, and was excited to tell people about what to expect over the years. Im sad to see him go, becasue i believed that if given time, he would have had michigans defense rolling, and i was excited about seeing someone at michigan who was going to emphasis technique and fundamentals.
2. I was a Michigan fan long before Shafer came around, and I was very excited to be apart of a blog community interested in knowing more about football, and offer another perspective. If by offering my perspective I offended people i appologize, as obviously it was not my intent. Still think that over the past couple of years I have been on the receiving in of many more attacks, then i have given out. But i appologize for any attack i have made, as one is too many.
3. Shafer not being at Michigan does ABSOLUTELY nothing to shake my confidence in my ability to break down a football play, to talk football, or to coach football. It has never been about proving myself on here. In fact its all been about talking Michigan football.
4. I like this Blog, i like Brian, and I like the WLA.. So im not going anywhere.... sorry to dissapoint some of you...
5. I like to talk about Skull cracking, Butt-kicking, weight-lifting, football stuff, becasue that is a big part of my life. In all reality i am exactly like i am in here, a nice guy with a pretty big heart, but kinda crazy. Im new to the world of internet tough guys, and bullying, so i am not very good at it, and most of the people that have a problem with me are much better at writing then I am, so be it. If anyone REALLY has a problem with me, im not too hard to find...

Well, I for one always enjoy reading your posts.
I'll make you a deal, you teach me more about football, and I'll teach you more about band. (because everyone wants to know how the Marching Band works, right?)

it's part of football Saturdays after all. My HS band director was a huge Michigan/MMB fan (and alumnus of both), so MMB was our model (minus the dedication, travel, discipline and talent).
Band girls and their embouchure. After hours, band only access to school facilities. A liquor cabinet hiding in plain sight. You do the math.

You must be confusing the MMB with the oft-suspended Wisconsin band. We (former) band kids hold ourselves to a much higher standard, at least until the uniform comes off and we're no longer on University property ;)

the scandalous behavior was me in HS. Some opportunities should not be missed and the risks were different. I would only presume to understand band kids generally, having been one; I would not presume to know the MMB experience beyond what the audience/crowd sees.

Trust me, there were plenty of us who really enjoy learning about schemes from you, and most of us were simply defending you.
The thread started with someone basically criticizing you for "talking down," for lack of a better term, to those who don't know as much about football ... and then it just kinda got out of hand.
But anytime you want to post what you know, remember that there are plenty of readers here who appreciate learning the intricacies of defense.

Gsimms, I need you to talk down to me about football because I know very little about schemes/alignments/concepts. There is a reason I don't know much, I never took the time and much of it is over my head. The day I become a coach and one as successful as you, then maybe (read: never) I will call you out. Until that day (read: never), I will continue to shut my mouth, ask questions (if my mouth is shut how can I ask questions? good question), and learn.

sometime in the middle of last season, when a shy, new poster in the haloscan days explained to our Fearless Leader that he was a football coach and would love to help out and offer insights through the UFR process.
Gsimms has since grown into such a phenomena that 'holding your vertical' has become part of all of our lexicons and an entire branch of anti-Gsimms have sprouted.....how bizarre.
Brian has an awesome site. The WLA makes me laugh everyday. Yet, both sites would not be as good as they are now without the contributions of Gsimms (not to mention his own blog 3 and out). I'd like to think I entertain people with some of my work, but Gsimms actually makes people smarter and more sophisticated football fans.
So, keep on, keeping on GSimms. I look forward to your next X's and O's session.

This is a tough one. I was in the MMB for the 1989-1992 seasons. I lived with seven guys in college, all of whom were not in the band.
The low point of my marching band experience was when we did the Gloria Estefan show my freshman year, including chanting "Oh-way-oh-way, oh-way-oh-way, oh-way-oh-ah".
My roommates and I still get together for football games. Occasionally, one of them will ask me a serious question about something band related. I'll start to give a serious answer and inevitably at some point during the conversation someone else will come over and say, "Oh-way-oh-way" and we all start laughing hysterically (at my expense).
That's my long winded way of saying, there isn't really that much to it. The members of the band are incredibly dedicated, more physically fit than you would expect, and more talented than you would expect. And every so often prone to doing something like the Gloria Estefan show.
Lots and lots of hours of practice and many good friendships made.

Love the details, intricacy and time you put in Gsimms. Definitely adds to the MGO experience and having a coaches perspective is great when watching the games and trying to figure out what's working/what's not and why. Keep em coming!

I enjoy your post and like yourself, have a some football knowledge. While I don't always agree with you, I do enjoy reading your blogs. Mgoblog has a good mix of bloggers and this I find is what makes it enjoyable.

Ha! So the argument against gsimmons is that he "talks down"? Hilarity, I vouch.
To have a problem with that, one must assume that gsimmons's knowledge is not above their own. One must assume that they are "above" being "talked down" to. That they have nothing to learn -- know-it-alls, as it were. In my not-at-all humble opinion, those who perceive that receiving education is being talked down to are full of ressentiment*, and deserve all the negative feelings they create within themselves. Swine! At the very least, they have none but themselves to blame. Their problem begins at home.
Props to gsimmons, whose contributions -- as evidenced by the abundance of supportive posts -- are welcome and enjoyed by those who are WORTHY.
