What 5 stars do we have the best shot of signing?

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on
Patrick Surtain, BJ Foster, Micah Parsons? Most seem like long shots but you never know.

Related question, which high 4 star we are in on could jump into 5 star territory by the time this cycle is over? Tyler Friday, Kamryn Babb, Jeremy Ruckert, Emil Ekiyor?

Can't really tell from his 247 page. No team is "warm" on his recruitment.

I'm assuming teams want to see his performance in more camps and then actually on the field starting this summer. Kid hasn't played a game yet so I'm not sure anyone is all in on him yet.

If you're looking for top 50 guys (We all are) this probably isn't going to be the best recruiting cycle. This class will focus on depth. 2019 however, looks like it could be HUGE!

I must have said something that wasnt true.....I have no idea #'s wise what 2019 will be. But I do know there is already a large handful of guys who are in the top 100 interested in Michigan.

If you're expecting 2018 to be this big recruiting coup filled with 5 stars i wouldnt get your hopes up. Guys will rise, guys will fall ect.. but this will be a class that lands between #12-17 im guessing

Clemson proved that as long as you have an elite QB, you can win national championships with recruitng classes that perennially rank in the 10-15 range, so I'm no longer as concerned about recruiting class rank. We do need to stock up on elite offensive linemen though.

is heavily dependant on the quantity of players you sign.  Obviously, to have a Top 5 class you also need quality players too.  If you look at the average ranking/player Clemson's classes have been Top 5-10.  They are recruiting at an elite level.  It's just that rarely do they sign massive classes which will put them towards the top of the rankings.  They pretty consistently sign a little over 20 recruits each year.

The final rankings will shift so much from now until next winter that we won't really know. I'm sure one of our commits will be a 5* on at least one site, but maybe not 247's cumulative ranking.

For example, a guy like Jordan Anthony was specifically a Rivals 5* last year. Cesar Ruiz was probably a 5 star on some sites too

I am a little surprised Michigan isn't at least on the "top 3" list of some top 50 players from this class. With Michigan getting so much national press and everything hitting home at once right now (record draft class, ROME, #3 APR score, great recruiting class, positive national press, etc.), you'd think Harbaugh would have a number of elite players trying to set up a visit. This is especially curious when you consider all the top players in Michigan's last class, and things have only gotten better since then.

I know this is going to be a much smaller class, but is there a reason I am missing why we aren't seeing interest from top-50 kids?

How many of those top players from last year's class were we hearing about in early May?  DPJ because he's an in-stater but other than that?  A lot of names will emerge in the summer and fall, that's how it's been under Harbaugh the last 2 recruiting cycles.

We were in on drew singleton super early, DPJ, Ambry thomas was in-stater we were in the top 3 for the entire recruiting cycle, Dylan mcaffrey was a top 50 guy we got.  Solomon was a camp win but he also busted out late in the cycle and we probably don't win that recruitment if we weren't the first big name school in on him. Late names will obviously emerge, but a fair amount of the highly ranked kids Michigan got last year had us high on their list for most of the recruiting cycle.

And we're in on the best in-staters again, it's just not as good of an in-state class as last year. Singleton is a Paramus kid and we're once again in on the top Paramus kid this cycle. Solomon was a top 100 kid when he committed to us in the summer, all of the big name SEC schools were on him for a while. Then you have guys like Vilain, Collins, Black, Filiaga, Anthony, Martin who all emerged later in the cycle.

Oh, we will be. Maybe not at this moment but Give it time. Harbaughs effect is gonna happen this year. The defense is gonnna be great, and Speight is now a vet QB, and the OL will be better. The story will be how we lost so many players and haven't missed a beat, and top recruits will notice.
The table has been set, for Harbaugh vs Saban, going forward. I do think the tide truly shifts this year.. we will beat OSU IN AA and from there itll be great.

Generally, when a new coach takes over a downtrodden blue blood program, his first two classes will be off the charts. That's because he can sell alot of playing time along with new found excitement at a school with massive resources. By year 3, playing time is no longer as abundant, so winning becomes essential to keep that buzz going. Hoke's first two classes were off the charts. So were Butch Jones's at Tennessee. By year 3, it became clear that neither was an elite coach and recruiting fell off. So if Harbaugh can avoid a lackluster season in year 3, I expect a strong finish to the class. Probably not top 5, but somewhere in the top 15.

You also have to look at it from a recruit's perspective rather than fan's. A recruit cares about winning and making it to the NFL. Everything else is noise. The APR is basically meaningless. Sure, recruits talk about academics but how many times have we seen a recruit mention the draw of Michigan's academics and then choose a much inferior school? The Rome trip while very cool (and I studied abroad as both an undergrad and a grad student, so I can attest to the value in the Rome trip) probably doesn't resonate much in a recruit's eyes. Further, Michigan has only recently starting winning. The excellent draft class happened days ago, much too soon for it to make an impact. Also keep in mind Alabama, Ohio State and Florida State among others  have been pumping out NFL players every single year for the past several years so it's something other schools can sell too.

But if I had to guess, it is because, as a team, we are so young. And a lot of that youth is very talented. If we had a junior-heavy starting rotation the depth chart might look a little different and be more attractive to potential 2018 recruits. I think that is why 2019 looks to be so much more promising.

The only 5 stars we have a shot with right now, as far as I know, are Amon-Ra St. Brown and to a lesser extent BJ Foster. 4.5 stars (probable future 5 stars) are Tyler Friday, Isaac Taylor Stuart, Kamryn Babb, Trey Hill, and Dallas Gant. Guys like Surtain Jr, Parsons, and Salyer are mostly going to be such long recruitments that we could have a shot with any of them capriciously.

MichiganStan

Honestly, none at the moment.

NJ 4 star Tyler Friday is the highest ranked player leaning to Michigan. He's roughly in the 40s range so he could easily be a 5 star when its all said and done.

Cali 5 star Amon Ra St Brown was looking like Michigan was a possiblity but now it seems DTR is successfully pulling him to UCLA. Slight chance

Texas 5 star BJ Fosterdoes have Michigan in his top 5 but Texas is the clear frontrunner

Lot of time left. The rankings WILL shift a lot. But really we just need to start making the playoffs and then the 5 stars will start knocking down Jim Harbaughs door
