Who do you like?

I like Team Empire:

-Pax Vader insures prosperity & peace

-Minimal government interference on empire planets

-Defense against any threat

-Stormtroopers are badass & obey orders

-Rebel uniforms suck

-Rebel planets will fight each other if the Empire is defeated

Yeah the Nazi overtones are pretty strong. When I watched Star Wars when I was a bit older and had some knowledge of history, I was like 'oh they're all Nazis'.  The Empire is all creepy white guys of Northern/Western European descent. Vader's helmet is literally shaped like German WWII infantry helmets. And the bad dudes who carry out the Empires orders are called stormtroopers for cryin' out loud.  Of course there are nods to the Roman Republic/Empire and maybe some Cold War and American Revolution too but there's a big WWII vibe for sure. Empire = Nazis.

Creepy white guys of northern/western Europe? You surely couldn't mean the kind of people who make up the majority of this board and the group of men who together created a social model that the rest of the world tried to emulate because of its superiority could you?

I disagree...this is about the Star Wars universe which is timely for today.

Second, the default view that the rebels are heroes I don't agree with.  The Empire offers alot of good and you can make a case that the rebels ARE the bad guys.  If they win, all those planets are not going to live in harmony forever and ever.

Look at the Roman Empire and what happened after it's breakup.  I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone else thought about this.

I'm generally okay with OT posts. It's funny how some of the most OT posts get a lot of responses, and make for a good discussion.

However, it just seems like we're opening the door here for everyone to post about their favorite movie, which would could quickly get unmanageable. I'm not negging this post, just sayin'.

I once made a META type suggestion that MGoBlog maintain a seperate category for OT posts all year round. Some other successful blogs support a wide range of topics around a common theme. I think that was viewed as too divergent from the MGoBlog identity, which I can understand.

Youre missing part of the backstory. The issue with the Empire is the Sith. The Sith use the empire as a tool to enact their plans. Sith Lords tend to lose themselves to the power of the darkside and many of their own actions stem from a sort of negative/dark/evil vibe in the universe. The empire is essentially the outcome of a sort of subconcious evil controlling the siths true actions.

The empire also gained power through an extremely bloody and violent coup of a democratic government by slaughtering an order of knights of peace and "light".

Rebel uniforms suck....but it's OK for stormtroopers to walk around in some kind of plastic dadaist onesie?  Boo to that logic.  Officer uniforms aren't much better, they're like the SS meets Le Corbusier.

And let's face it, the Alliance has way, way cooler ships.  TIE fighters look like a gray peapod with solar panels attached.  I guess Vader's TIE fighter was pretty sweet, but the rest are like HERE'S THE BROAD SIDE OF A BARN TO HIT.  About the only good thing the Empire has going for it are Star Destroyers, which are apparently more indestructible than all the Death Stars they build.

So yeah, Rebels all the way.  Plus being a Jedi actually seems way cooler than being a Sith lord.
