OT: What's your last meal?

Submitted by Wendyk5 on

When I read about the team being in Rome, my focus immediately went to food. I visited Rome while I was in high school and loved every meal. So that got me thinking: if I had to pick a last meal, what would it be? This is such a difficult question for me. I love food and eating, and picking just one meal is like picking a favorite child. Ask me the same thing tomorrow, and it would be a completely different meal. But if I had to choose my last meal today, it would be a really well-made caesar salad, spaghetti and meatballs made with beef, pork, and veal (the meatball triumvirate), and for dessert, moist chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and a big glass of milk.

What's your last meal?

For the dough:

3.5 cups flour
1.5 cups water
0.5 cup cornmeal
0.5 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 packet active yeast

Mix it well, so that you don't have pockets of cornmeal.  I like to start by adding half of the canola oil to everything else, then slowly add the rest as I'm mixing.  Let it rise in a warm place for a few hours or, better yet, in the fridge overnight.  This is enough for two pizza crusts.  It freezes well, so you can always have a crust ready to go.

Take a stick of butter and butter your whole cast iron pan, sides and all.  This is not the time to be stingy.  Plop your dough ball in the center and press it down flat, pushing the dough all the way up the sides of the pan.

Put a pound of your favorite shredded cheese into the crust.  Or more if you're not planning to move around much for the rest of the day.  I like to saute a whole head of chopped garlic and mix that with the cheese, but I just use a bunch of garlic powder if I'm lazy.

Toppings next.  May I recommend pepperoni?

Sauce on the top.  I recommend 2-3 cups of 6-in-1 ground tomoatoes.  You can find big cans of them at GFS.  Otherwise, your tomato sauce of choice.  Add some canned diced tomatoes in there if you like it chunky.  I like to put a bunch italian seasoning in the sauce and mix it around a bit, so that the toppings and sauce are a little bit integrated.

Pop that bad boy in a 450 degree oven for 40-50 minutes.  When it's done, let it rest in the skillet for 15 minutes or so so that it's not too liquidy.  Use a thin spatula to get under the crust and slide it out onto a cutting board (you may want a buddy for this part).  Cut it with a nice long knife, and enjoy.

I would donate my last meal to a homeless person because I am a better human being than everyone else.

And that meal would be salmon poached in butter, then put several slices of cheddar cheese on top and throw it under the broiler for a minute, then sprinkle a few capers on. This way the homeless person won't enjoy it and nobody wins but dead me.

What kind of Italian bread are we talking here, because there are lots to choose from (focaccia, tarallucci pugliese, which is more a cracker, but still delicious or other types of Italian bread of which I can think of because I'm very drunk, . And if you make a French baguette and Italy, is it Italian bread. Because a beautiful French baguette and some homemade butter (made by someone else) and a little salt and country ham is what I would want. And a lot of champagne and bath salts. Champagne preferably from the champagne region of some vintage and the bath salts from a bath and year doesn't really matter to me.

Joe's Brooklyn Pizza in Rochester, NY. Or Frank Pepe's in New Haven, CT. Good Bordeaux to drink. Dessert: Vanilla milkshake with Double Stuff crushed and mixed in. Then about ten shots of a great bourbon.

Well, if I had to choose, I'll go with Beef Wellington with some grilled asparagus or in-season vegetables and a nice spinach salad with crumbled Bleu cheese and French dressing. As a twist, I will ask for a wine which I know is nearly impossible to get in the area so I can put off the whole dying thing as long as possible.

So I'd start out with a nice tomato soup with a side of almond pesto brushcetta, and then I'd have linguine with white clams sauce, and then I'd have a nice italian lamb chop, and for dessert I would have a slice of ricotta cheesecake

Rosemary rack of lamb, seared scallops, iceberg and bleu cheese wedge, rare ribeye and then butterscotch morsel cookies, all with a huge pitcher of whole milk. Alternatively, 24 vinegar ribs from the Salt Lick in Austin, Texas. Alternatively, 20 chicken mole tacos from 100 percent taquito in Houston, Texas.
