Clicked off as soon as i saw the word "banners". You could write a novel with how many news stories there have been where someone from the Fab 5 has complained about hanging them.

No disrespect to anybody, you included, but the issue is important to a lot of Michigan fans, and seems to be at least as relevant as what new T-shirt is at the M Den, or the score of the latest non-revenue sports contest held in New Jersey.

More people, more fans, in my opinion should have the back of the Fab Five. They did a lot for the school despite this negative result with respect to Martin.

Don't give a shit. Hang up the banners.

The NCAA won't do jack shit to Michigan if we hang em back up. They didn't do shit to OSU when they celebrated Tressel, nor did they do anything to UMass when they celebrated Calipari like Rose said in the article.

It should be especially clear after UNC gets a slap on the wrist for forging classes.

Michigan should stop giving a damn about what the NCAA thinks about banners. The only thing stopping the school from hanging them is its inability to let go of the past and be the bigger man.

4 of the 5 players did nothing wrong.

Yeah and members of this board constantly point the finger when things like this happen.  Do not hang them up.  Accept that they were not legitimate wins and move on.  Forever.  The wins will never be legitimate.

When PSU celebrated Jo Pa was that good?  When OSU celebrated Tressel did you approve?

When considering these banners it is important to recognize that the acctions of these coaches and kids set the program back for years.  This is nothing to celebrate.  I loved watching the Fab Five play but I hate what they, the coaches and the kids after them did to the program.

It's COMPLETELY within the realm...

The point is one poster is saying eff the NCAA.

The other poster is saying that if we eff the NCAA, then we are no better than the schools who do exactly that.

Yes, what Webber did is not remotely equal to enabling a culture of raping little boys but that's not the point.  If we, Michigan, sinks to the level of the people who think it's okay to say eff the NCAA, then we're really no better than them.

It's a slippery slope to debate.

I'm just going to say that if you were on a team that won or went to a National Championship but was forced to take down the banner because someone on your team took a bunch of money and lied under oath, you'd be pretty bitter about it as well. I get the annoyance by it all, especially if you're one of the passionate fans who think we should disassociate with the "era" altogether. That being said, this article is about Steve Fisher not the Fab 5.

I was really young at the time of the Fab 5, but they were my first Michigan memory. I say all that because there are a lot of details I was not as keen on, such as the fact of Steve Fisher's innocense. This article is purely about how Steve Fisher basically would be regarded as one of the all-time current greats if only those Championship banners and wins could be a part of his coaching resume. It's better than what Tom Izzo has accomplished, for example, but Steve Fisher is never brought up in the same breath as those guys, which Jalen is saying isn't fair. I agree with him, for what it's worth. And Jalen is the perfect individual to talk about Fisher. It was a great read, and I'm glad Jalen said what he did. Personal feelings aside about the Fab 5 era, Fisher is the guy who took the most heat by it when he most likely was 100% innocent of the misdeeds. He deserves the credit he's getting here.

however, you are wrong as to Fischer's innocence.  And I am not even going to the long held belief by what is actually the majority in that the head coach is the one that gets both the credit and blame, so decide carefully on your decisions.

Facts are an over zealous booster got way too close to way too many UM players and the fact it was happening was so obviously transparent that it was obvious he had the approval of the man in charge of Michigan basketball. Or so said Don Canham, former UM A.D. as he watched from his seat in Crisler "It was quite obvious something out of the ordinary was taking place. Men that I had never met or seen and that I knew were not connected to Michigan basketball were approaching players with no interference by the coaching staff, shaking their hands, engaging in conversation. In fact the only people i saw were these men I did not know and UM bb players. There were no members of the coaching staff present."

Love him, hate him, does not matter. I agree he had a nice run and proved himself as a bb coach. However, it's obvious he was not an innocent in the Fab 5 scandal.

You're probably right, and maybe I took too much out of Jalen's comments. I was not aware of that comment or had that knowledge. I was 8 when the last championship game happened, so yeah, I probably spoke a bit out of hand. I still appreciate what Jalen said, however, and I do believe that the incident doesn't mean that Fisher isn't both a) a good coach and b) a caring and/or loving coach. Perhaps his issue was that he was a bit too laid back and ignored what was going on. Sometimes our love for others makes it difficult to fully and properly discipline those we love when required. That's the tough and a lot of times difficult thing about responsibility, and it sounds like that was most likely the case here. But we can never forget that we need to fulfill those responsibilities regardless of how hard they can be.

Jalen gonna Jalen. When I hear Jalen comment on Michigan athletics it elicits the same feeling I had when all there was left for breakfast was Kix cereal.

Michigan technically took down the banners in a self-imposed punishment. However, the NCAA accepted this punishment and tacked on more for good measure. My question to Jalen or anyone else that cares to answer: If Michigan doesn't self impose the banners being removed, what are the odds the NCAA doesn't include that in their punishment? .1%?

We could, as a compromise, bring back the 1992 banner, since Ed Martin officially became a booster that weekend - we were "clean" when we won the regional.  Then the Fab Five have one banner to their name.

Gosh this argument is dumb. Comes up every time, and it doesn't make a lick of sense. Show me a banner anywhere where someone is touting a "Regional Championship." It's a Final Four banner. That Final Four was vacated.

The banners are gone, done, never coming back. Get over it already--you can't take a punishment for the largest financial cheating scandal in NCAA history at the time and come back 15 years later to say "Well, we didn't like the punishment, other people cheat, too, can we have our banners back?"

Leaders and Best apparently means nothing when it comes to integrity, I guess.

I'd say John Beilein is doing just fine without having to deal with the Fab Five diehards carping about banners. I was in Crisler during those years, and it was fun. I loved the Fab Five back then, but Michigan got dinged for cheating. It took its punishment. The program is back. Why does this have to be relitigated over and over and over again every time Jalen feels like he wants to complain about his legacy?

When you vacate games, and since the NCAA was quite clear about specifically when Webber became ineligible, you don't get to hang banners related to those games. Why wouldn't the NCAA have asked for that anyway? That's standard stuff.

To his coach, who did a really great job of working with these young men. Webber continues to be the issue, and always will be until he mans up and admits his wrongdoing that caused so much heartache for this university and its' fans.

That's the one thing that's been overlooked, how committed he was to school. And we weren't taking paperless classes like they do down in Chapel Hill."

Who gives a damn? Clearly he doesn't.

Does it bother you or something? If so, if he says sorry is that REALLY going to make you feel better? If so, don't you think it's silly to have a pissing match over an apology?

Chris Webber coming out and saying I'm sorry to the world isn't going to change anything - it still happened. No one died, people need to stop acting like it. Either you're going to hold onto it and hate him, be indifferent, or you're over it.

Holding onto this notion that a grown man needs to apologize for something like this and things will be all better is silly.

It's like steriods in baseball. If Barry Bonds and co. say sorry for doing them...are they instantly HOFers? No. You either hate them and don't want them in the Hall, you're indifferent, or you're over it.

Love Jalen but his comparison to UMASS and Calipari is so flawed. Webber could say Fish had nothing to do with it (NCAA cleared him of wrong doing at the time) and Michigan would never hang those banners. Just look at the fan base, most try act like those teams never existed.
