OT - Anyone at the Detroit Zoo today? Was there a Michigan event

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

So after proceeding no more than 100 feet into the gate of the Detroit Zoo today I noticed that everyone was wearing maize and blue. That continued for several hours as I walked with my family around the zoo. At one point I saw a Michigan flag, Michigan tent and a large congregation of people wearing UofM clothing.

Was that an Alumni Association event? Anyone have any idea what the story was?

It was kind of nice being somewhere outside of Ann Arbor with that many fellow Wolverines.

on although we were unaware of the event. There was a UM Hillel Foundation/Alumni Association gathering for a few hours. Had to be at least a couple hundred folks with UM gear on today.

I'm a member of the Detroit Zoological Society, the UM Alumni Association and the UM AA of Greater Detroit and hadn't heard anything about an event today.

I love the zoo, however, and wonder what I missed today!

A member of all three. Looked like it was a little bigger than small. There had to be several hundred Michigan clad people at the Zoo today. Definitely the largest congregation of Michigan people I've seen in Oakland County at one time.

All that said MGoJen, since you're clearly into doing the AAUM and Club events, keep your ears open if you're the beer-drinking sort. UofM Club of Greater D is about to announce a joint scholarship fundraiser with Kinesiology Alumni Society for a craft beer tasting in August featuring the beer and food from Grizzly Peak, Blue Tractor and Jolly Pumpkin. I'll let loose the details once it goes from pencil to ink.

... I think it's funny that you were surrounded by 100s of Michigan people, a Michigan tent, and flags, but then come to a website to ask if anything was going on. No big deal, just kinda funny how we rely on the internet for information and not, you know, talking to people.

I haven't seen any t.v. other than Nickelodeon and the occasional Michigan game in like five years.
As far as the Zoo, the name of the game is making sure they stay on the right side of the barriers and don't put the ice cream in each others hair. Barely any time for casual conversations with my own spouse much less strangers.

I was at the Toledo Zoo flaunting my student shirt on Friday and was proud to see more Michigan then OSU shirts. Regardless of how close I may have been to the border, I was still in Ohio.
