Hello: Matt Brown
Michigan adds a PWO from Ohio - decommitted from Quinnipiac Lacrosse to play LB/FB for Michigan. 2016 Ohio Defensive Player of the Year. Welcome!

...Joe Kerridge? That would be cool! Welcome to Ann Arbor, Matt.
Harbaugh
As Mgofish pointed out on twitter, Brown was first team MaxPreps All American on defense with players like Aubrey Soloman, Dylan Moses, and Jaelen Phillips. Wouldn't be surprised to see him become a real contributor in some way.
Why didn't he have any offers? Sounds like a real nice get. Go blue
Granted I don't know this guy that well, but I can think of several possible reasons.
1.) Maybe the kid was a late bloomer. Every college has their big board made at the conclusion of kids junior year. Obviously their is some late shuffiling, but perhaps this kid wasn't noticable as a junior, and blew up his senior year once he grew physically and mentally.
2.) Probablly didn't camp much.
3.) Maybe he played bad competition?
4.) He might have been focused on lacrosse and spent time training for that. Maybe he told coaches that is the sport he wanted to play.
5.) Maybe he benefited from a system or the players around him.
6.) Every coach but Harbaugh sucks.
OTOH, it looks like he's good at football and making good football plays.
Also, lacrosse recruiting begins very early so it's possible he has just been a lacrosse commit for a while and therefore not recruited for football. Football coaches aren't going to spend much time recruiting a kid who was committed to a different sport since his sophomore year.
He goes to Solon, a remember a few years back they would go 10-0 / 9 -1 every year then get bounced early in the playoffs. Their competition seems so-so till they get to the playoffs.
So he's basically a 5 star
Faster
This joke will be funny to me until the day I die.
BOOM! You just got Jackson'd.
Solomon. I know it's minor, but it really isn't.
miami
Was just about to say the same. Kid's probably already looking to transfer thanks to that comment :(
Sorry guys
Defensive POY in Ohio who was set to play LAX at Quinnipiac? Odd. Nice get just the same!
Was he POY in all of Ohio or just his division? IIRC, Dymonte Thomas and DeVeon Smith were both offensive players of the year in their divisions.
He was Division I - Defensive Player of the Year and Division I - All Defense:
Thanks for the link. I assumed he must have been in a division with smaller schools. If the divisions are the same as Michigan, I would think that could get at least an offer from a MAC school.
If you remember Graham Glasgow's senior film, he looked like a player worthy of an offer. Having one season of football kept him from getting anything better than PWO offers.
Seems weird. Oh well. Our gain is everyone's loss.
Ohio Defensive POTY is a walk on? How'd that happen?
Or is that POTY in lacrosse?
I don't know this kid or his story, but there are legitimately great high school players every year who don't necessarily fit the mold college coaches look for. High school awards are for high school production and aren't based on projection at the next level.
Here's hoping he makes a big play in Columbus at some point during his career. Sounds like a good dude to have in the program.
Yep. I remember a few years back there was a kid playing in our county that was a first team all state player, set some records, etc and wound up going to a DIII school because he was considered small and slow. None of the local MAC schools even offered him - not even Akron or Kent which are right around the corner and not exactly powerhouse programs.
Same thing happens in basketball. Some kid averages 30ppg in HS, but can't get a sniff at a big program because no one wants to recruit a 6'1" power forward with mediocre athleticism even if he did take his team to states.
At the very least, he will make the scout team fearsome.
Tim Hardaway Jr averaged 30/ game, wasn't short and still had hardly any offers. He never got higher than a 3*.
Right. And that's a guy that obviously had some serious upside - no offense to Matt Brown, but almost certainly more than him.
Some guys dominate in high school and just don't have the physical tools to make that translate into DI stardom.
I assume the OHSAA a smaller division in Ohio? How does it compare to the others?
Regardless, outstanding for him & I hope he has great success.
OHSAA stands for the Ohio High School Athletic Association. It's the whole system not a division. In the article it says he was Division 1, which is the largest schools in Ohio.
So, strange course to get here but we'll take him!
OHSAA is the ENTIRE athletics system of the high school sports in the state of Ohio.
Think of it like the NCAA.
It then has divisions that separate the schools based on size (FBS, FCS, DII, and DIII for NCAA)
And are then separated into conferences based on proximity, size, and competition level.
Can he play football and Lax? Do we want him to?

cool
Props to harbaugh for finding him and getting him here on a pwo.
Sounds like a kid who will play and contribute in a major way in a few years. Feels like a kid who will finish his career on scholarship.
Liked seeing all those picks in the beginning. Seems to have good instincts. Not saying this guy is going to be a starter at some point but definitely would think to be a contributor in 3-4 years.
Go to the link and look at the Maxpreps Jhuddle Ohio football 2nd team defense. He is listed on the 2nd team AllOhio Big school defense at LB. So I guess I don't understand how a 2nd team guy could be the Ohio Defensive POY? Maybe their is multiple player of the year awards by different place. Like Gatorade and All incest team. But still a good pick up for a pwo.

That sounds sooo Ohio.
There are quite a few different all Ohio teams and player of the year awards. The AP has one and Maxpreps and a few others has them. Another great PWO. looks like this class of PWOs has some players who could end up on scholarship before there studies are done.
GO Blue!!!!!
so is he playing this September?
Is he a freshmen this season or next year? Sounds like one hell of a PWO. If he enrolls next season I could see him jumping ship with potential small school scholarship offers.
this year
That's not your average walk on. That's a guy who may contribute at a decent clip. I hope they keep him on defense.
Was he rated starwise by the recruiting services?
Has good speed, his plays jump out on tape and just from watching a few of his linebacker snaps, you can tell he has the coordination and ability to get the angles he needs to at 220 lbs. Adding 20 lbs. of muscle shouldn't hurt this kids speed. He could get the right angles for great blocks at fullback and if he added that weight, those 300lb. d-line guys will remember his pop. Especially after he's had a 5 to 10 yard head start. I could be wrong but he doesn't look like your Joe Bolden or Desmond Morgan type of talent. Here's to hope.
I wonder if Harbaugh will encourage him to play lacrosse too. He's been supportive of others doing multiple sports (although it didn't really work out that well for Drake Johnson).
"Playing With 9000 lb Heavy Loading Equipment®" it'll be fine.
to start dropping soon. OSU is cleaning up again. I don't wanna play catch up again this year.
