We Couldn’t Have One Without the Other

This podcast is presented by the Bo Store, UGP & Moe's. Rishi and Ryan have been here since the beginning—shopping with them supports us and supports good dudes.

It was recorded at the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, and while waiting for his segment @ACiatti was super-pleased about the free fast internet connection.

Our sponsors make this possible: Homesure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Deo Bookkeeping, Michigan Law Grad, and Peak Wealth Management.

1. Post Mortem, Tourney Thoughts

starts against 1:00

Jack Stack broke Ace’s will to be wakeful. Oregon’s plan was to leave Michigan’s shooters so wide open from three we’d get confused and miss: congratulations you found our weakness. Also turnovers went the other way from normal, and we vastly underestimated Jordan Bell. Are we happy or sad about Oregon depantsing Kansas?

2. Basketball Beyond

starts at 20:02

A run through the roster for 2017-’18 by position, and we do it from 1 to 5 even though it makes way more sense for next year’s team to reverse that. X as Darius Morris, Brooks comes Nova-approved, RAHK all night long, Mathews is a wild card, Robinson is what he is, Ibi is probably another year away, DJ has a DJ-like understudy coming in, and if Moe is Louisville Moe all year he’ll drive us back to the 16. Also: theories on bigs development, and developments in the B1G.

3. Gimmicky Top Five: The Best Player in the NFL (That you can draft out of Michigan next month?)

starts at 53:00

Michigan’s entire starting defense isn’t eligible for the NFL Draft because McCray is still around. But that still leaves plenty of players to choose from, plus Jake Butt, in deciding who will be the best five pros out of—deep breath here—Glasgow, Godin, Wormley, Taco, Gedeon, D.Hill, D.Thomas, Peppers, Stribling, Jourdan, Kalis, Braden, Mags, Butt, Darboh, Chesson, and Deveon Smith. Did I forget anyone?

4. Ace’s Aceless Hockey Podcast

starts at 1:08:10

We welcome special guests Anthony Ciatti (@Ciatti) and our hockey beatwriter/otherjobdoer David Nasternak (@NastyIsland) to discuss how this was, by Corsi, the worst Michigan hockey team ever and ungh it was so unbelievably bad yuck blech argh. Oh right and options to replace Red, which don’t include any Red Wings but do include the two best hockey coaches in the country, AND Mel.

Seth,  Thanks for the bracket assist tool a few weeks back.  I used that for my picks this year and have a chance to win the bracket I am in going into the Final 4 weekend.  Go Zags!!!

I have to agree with Ace in that I feel like Michigan topped out its potential.  I know they didn't shoot amazing from three but it was only slightly below  their season average and Oregon felt like the better team, they were getting easier shots most of the night.  It was a great season and we certainly could have made a final four run, but I don't think we were a clearly better team than Oregon which would make the loss much worse.

Hotel ad keeps saying there are 13 conference rooms, one for each team in the Big Ten.  Is it supposed to be one for each OTHER team in the Big Ten?  Or have we eliminated one of the Big Ten teams?  (I vote for Michigan State.)

  7. Indiana
  8. Purdue
  9. Wisconsin
  10. Nebraska
  11. Iowa
  12. Minnesota
  13. Maryland

That's 13. Let's count again.

  1. Michigan
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan State
  4. Penn State
  5. Illinois
  6. Northwestern
  7. Maryland
  8. Rutgers

given credit for. He finished with 57 on the season which ranks 10th and only 5 Wolverines had more (Tarply 3x, Webber 2x, Udoh 2x, Riley and Simms).

I agree with Brian's optimism for Davis, but he didn't mention one of his best strengths, his hands. If you throw the ball in to him down low, it's not going to bounce off his hands and go out of bounds.

Poole isn't just a shooter.  He can shoot, and that may be his primary role next year, but he's a great passer with a good handle who can finish around the bucket too.

Conversely, MAAR really wasn't showing drive and pass ability vs OkSt.  To be sure, a couple times he dribbled to the free throw line and then passed to Walton, but those were set plays, with the big screening Walton's man at the top.  Technically he drove and then passed, but it wasn't a drive and then scanning the court for an open man.  I would be surprised if his usage goes up significantly.  He's just too one-dimensional with the ball in his hands.  The offense is much more likely to run though the PG, Wilson, and Wagner, and that's not accounting for the role Matthews might play.

Agree that you need to be able to pick up the Kyle Connors and the Dylan Larkins of the world, but I think the Michigan hockey name will always be able to factor in with those types of kids, regardless of who's the coach.  Maybe the direction that they need to take the team is with an older base of recruits. The run and gun style of play hasn't panned out for them the last 4 years.

Enjoyed segment 2 much more than being tortured again in segment 1.  Agree we'd beat Oregon 8 times if played 10 games.  Excellent wrap though.

Looking forward to Mathews and DJ running the lanes with X making good decisions.  Run the hell out of them next year.

Hey Ace, Jack Stack BBQ is definitely top shelf. It has been a staple of my many trips to KC for work over the years, as well as KC Joe's. However, next time you get there, try Q-39 (opened about 2 years ago) on 39th Street. It's off the charts and worth the Uber/taxi to get there!
