Michigan Wrestling: End of Season

Submitted by MichFan1997 on

The 2017 Michigan Wolverine wrestling team just wrapped up their season today. Nobody made the finals this year, but they had 3 all-Americans. All three were freshman too. Steven Micic placed 4th at 133, Logan Massa was 3rd at 165, and Myles Amine was 4th at 174. The team is in 10th place going into tonights championship matches (8 p.m, ESPN) on just the strength of those 3 wrestlers. Nobody else scored at all. Penn State has 5 in the finals and has already clinched their 6th title in 7 years.

As for next year, Michigan has 2 all-Americans coming off redshirts. Adam Coon at heavyweight was 3rd and 2nd the past two years. Alec Panteleo was 6th last year. They also return Dom Abounader who missed being an all-American by one match. The team has a strong chance to be one of the 3 or 4 best teams in the nation next year.

quarter final, semi final and 3rd place matches.  Micic's ceiling was 3rd place.  He really couldn't do anything against Tomasello.  He won't beat him while they are in the same weight.  Amine had a really nice pin against the #2 wrestler but he was WAY overmatched by Valencia.  He didn't stand a chance.  He loses 10/10 matches against him. Too bad they are both Freshman.   I would've liked to have seen Massa wrestle Martinez again in the final but I don't think he can beat him.  His ceiling is 2nd place.

I don't know if he will, but he can. I-Mar damn near lost to Anthony Valencia a few years ago, and Massa is clearly a step above him. I-Mar is probably the second best wrestler in college right now if he's locked in, but he's not always locked in. He gets flat footed and sloppy at times, and someone as talented as Massa could take advantage.

Next year is going to be much better for the team with the return of the 3 big red shirts. The team wasn't going to win anything major this year with those guys out. It's awesome seeing the maturation of the three freshmen. They are the future.

It just seems like the wrestling program should be better. It's got a good history, it's got the brand-new practice facility. It's located in a region of the country that strong in wrestling. But for some reason McFarland doesn't get it done.
